Tips to protect yourself from novel coronavirus

We all have a role to play in preventing the spread of COVID-19

COVID-19 cases in York Region and across the province continue to decrease. But now is not the time to let down our guard. York Region residents are reminded to stay vigilant and to do our part in preventing the spread of COVID-19. 

Remember:

• Wear a face mask or covering when inside public spaces 
• Practice physical distancing 
• Clean or sanitize your hands well and often
• Seek assessment at a COVID-19 Assessment Centre if you are feeling unwell or believe you have been exposed to COVID-19

Know if you've been exposed to COVID-19

With the free COVID Alert app you can:

• Get a notification if you may have been exposed to COVID-19
• Get advice on what to do next
• Tell nearby app users if you test positive for COVID-19 without sharing any personal information

• Collect, store or access any personal data or health information
• Tell you if you're currently near someone who's tested positive
• Tell you about outbreaks in your city or neighbourhood

COVID Alert app is completely voluntary. You choose to download, use or delete it. The more people who use it, the more effective it will be in helping to protect each other and our communities.

Cover up in Common Spaces 

On Friday, August 7, it became mandatory to wear face masks and coverings in common areas in condos, apartments and multi-residential buildings.

Wearing a face mask or covering helps prevent the spread of your respiratory droplets to another person. Be a good neighbour and make sure to cover up when using common seating areas, laundry facilities and elevators.

• Be safe, be kind, act responsibly and enjoy!

Mandatory face masks and coverings in
York Region

At a special meeting of Regional Council last Thursday, Council made the unanimous decision to endorse a recommendation from the Region's Medical Officer of Health to issue an instruction requiring operators of enclosed public spaces to have a policy in place that prohibits people from entering if they are not wearing a face mask or covering. This measure will help us control the spread of COVID-19 as we continue to re-open our communities safely and responsibly.

Are you a business owner? We have resources to help you

All businesses open to the public will be required to have a policy and post visible signage indicating that face masks and coverings are required inside the premises. To help business owners adapt to the new requirements, York Region has developed approved signage you can use at your establishment as well as a sample face mask and covering policy.

Where DON''T you need to wear a face mask or covering?

Some locations are exempt from the mandatory face mask and covering rules such as schools, childcare facilities and private transportation. Children under age five and those with medical conditions that prevent them from safely wearing a face mask or covering are also exempt.

New service available for seniors concerned about COVID-19 on transit

Many seniors depend on transit but are worried about the risk of COVID-19. To help address this need, the Mobility On-Request service will be available to seniors 65 years or older who may be feeling hesitant taking regular public transit during this time. Mobility On-Request vehicles are thoroughly cleaned, drivers are equipped with proper PPE and there is a limit to the number of passengers allowed in the vehicles at once.

Now that face masks and coverings are mandatory at public indoor locations, make sure you''re using yours safely and correctly.
