Every Act of Kindness Matters More Than Ever Now?
?
Human beings are social beings. We need connection with others. Even something as simple as a shared smile in passing forges a brief bond between two people - a kind of social cohesion that makes empathy and mutual support possible.
?
But what do you do when your smile has to be covered by a mask, as it must in these ongoing days of COVID?
?
Jim has talked before about his habit of smiling at folks he sees while out and about - and how he's had to shift his smile to his eyes. It's a way of smiling - known as a Duchenne smile - that makes crow's lines/laugh lines at the corners of your eyes.
?
Not only is an eye smile considered more authentic; there's evidence that it can elevate your mood more than a mouth-only smile. Other research?suggests it may control stress better, as well.
?
With all the challenges we're currently facing - the pandemic, the fight for racial and social justice, a depressed economy, and more - every act of kindness and connection is more important than ever, more meaningful than ever. Every act of shared humanity keeps us together. Only together will we successfully weather the current storms.
?
Thanks for what you do to make the world a better place,?

We Can Make a Better Post-Pandemic World, Part 3
?
Originally, our last post marked the end of this series, but the ongoing fight for justice that the death of George Floyd inspired has kept us thinking about what more we can do to create a healthier world for us all.
?
Certainly, there's a lot we can accomplish in the classroom - virtual or otherwise - through a trauma-informed approach that recognizes the importance of both physical movement and SEL. We can give students the tools and skills they need to become strong, aware, and resilient.
?
But there's much we can - and, we believe should - do outside the classroom, as well, to change the conditions that give rise to a great deal of the trauma we see our students carrying inside, especially students of color.

What My School District - & Yours - Can Do to Pursue Justice for All?(EdSurge)?
?
My experience as an American has led me to understand that, as long as we don't acknowledge racism, we give it power. When we turn a blind eye to injustice we empower it. In our tendency to forgive and forget these sins, we all become culpable. If we believe that this is "not my fight," we embolden and feed this horrific beast?.

Teaching, for me, has always been a vehicle. A vehicle for freedom, for truth telling, for hell raising.

The classroom was, for me, in many ways a sanctuary, a laboratory and a place where the helplessness that I might begin to feel as a person who belongs to protected classes was put to bed ...?
