Hello 2020! No images? Click here ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dear WorldSkills Supporters, A very Happy New Year to you all from the WorldSkills Australia team! I hope you celebrated the start of 2020 in great spirits with family and friends. As the year is now well underway, and exciting things are quickly appearing on the horizon, it's a great time to look ahead and think about what this year may bring. First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank Brian Wexham for his dedicated service to WorldSkills Australia. After nine years on the WorldSkills Australia Board, including four years served as Chair and five years as Board Director, Brian decided to resign his position at the close of 2019. We wish Brian all the very best as he continues to promote and champion the VET sector in Australia through his leadership of SkillsOne. As we say goodbye to Brian we are also excited to welcome three new faces to the Board. After a very competitive selection process, we are pleased to announce that Terri-Helen Gaynor, Chloe Benton, and Duncan Jacklin have joined the WorldSkills Australia Board of Directors. They all bring with them a wealth of experience and knowledge that will assist us in guiding WSA into the future. Welcome to the WorldSkills family, Terri-Helen, Chloe, and Duncan! This year will be an exciting one for all of us as we ramp up our activities in preparation for the 2020 WorldSkills National Championships & Skills Show, to be held from the 13-15 August at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. These National Championships could not happen without the continued support of all those that contributed to a successful round of regional competitions conducted throughout 2019. It was wonderful to see the increase in engagement across the 34 regions! We're proud to announce that the 2020 National Championships will be bigger and better than ever. This year we will be co-locating with the annual SkillsWest Careers Expo in Perth. By integrating activities at these two events we can create an impressive showcase of skills and VET in Perth and help grow visitation. Additionally, TAFE Directors Australia will be holding its annual National Convention in Perth at the same time, so attendees can also visit the WorldSkills National Championships. I encourage other organisations to plan their meetings and trips for Perth at this time to be part of this exciting event in the VET calendar. As the year progresses, we will provide further updates about the National Championships events and activities. Stay tuned and please let us know if you would like further information ahead of time. In signing off this newsletter, I would like to take a moment to speak about the mission of WorldSkills. WorldSkills is not just an event organisation that runs competitions—we are an organisation that has the responsibility for benchmarking skills and upholding skills excellence, both in Australia and globally. Running and hosting competitions, and building partnerships between industry and training providers, helps us achieve these crucial goals. It is important for us to know, from both an industry and training perspective, that we are competitive on the global stage because that will assist in making the Australian economy stronger moving forward. Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to working with you all to make 2020 a successful and exciting year for WorldSkills in Australia. Trevor Schwenke, WorldSkills Australia

![]() AVETRA 2020 Researcher Development Series Apprentice Employment Network NSW & ACT VDC 2020 Virtual Teaching & Learning Conference ARBS 2020 (postponed) Worldskills Australia, National Championships & Skills Show (postponed) ![]() ![]() In Memory of Stuart Aisbett It is with great sadness that on the 15th of June 2020, Stuart Aisbett, 2007 Skillaroo for Vehicle Painting and dedicated WorldSkills Judge, Trainer and Mentor passed away. He was a true credit to the vocational education and training sector; he was very treasured throughout the WorldSkills Community and we will all miss him dearly. Axalta proudly supports WorldSkills Australia and all of our vehicle painting champions. Reflections from the WorldSkills Australia Community Stuart’s journey with Axalta started way back in 2007 when Stuart was being trained in readiness to go to Japan to compete at the International WorldSkills competition after winning gold at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships for Vehicle Painting. Stuart returned from Japan with a Silver medal, narrowly missing out on the gold. By mid-2008, Stuart had taken a position with Axalta (at that time known as DuPont Performance Coatings) as a technical sales consultant, later moving to the position of State Technical Trainer for Axalta Victoria. Everyone respected his technical ability and enjoyed his easy-going personality. Stuart went on to support many WorldSkills competitions and competitors over the years, always without hesitation and with a wonderful attitude that was infectious. Talented, smart, funny, and loved by all. He will be greatly missed. Paul Polverino, National Training Manager, Axalta Coating Systems (Australia) Pty Ltd Since Stu’s involvement with WorldSkills we had become good friends, and I am really proud to say I had him as a mate. Over the years we had a lot of fun travelling around the country together organising regional and national events. With his knowledge and skill as a spray painter, along with the experience he had gained from his WorldSkills journey, he was an integral part of the WorldSkills Australia team. Everything Stu did in preparation, during or after any competition was done with a smile on his face, a great sense of humour and we had plenty of laughs together. Brad Franklin, WorldSkills Australia International Expert and Mentor From the first time I meet Stuart at the Nationals prior to Japan he struck me, as a cool calm person, things did not seem to faze him. He loved what he did and found the vehicle painting industry fascinating. Stuart was highly focused while training for the Japanese International WorldSkills competition; we spent many hours at the Standox (Axalta) training centre in Melbourne plus at my college in Glendale NSW. Without Stuart’s commitment to his trade and training, he may not have done so well at the internationals in Japan, achieving a silver medal. When he returned to Australia, he applied for a job with our category sponsor Axalta Coatings and went on to become their training manager for Victoria Stuart assisted me with a number of WorldSkills National competitions as a judge and then became a mentor for the winners following their individual international WorldSkills journeys. Following is a quote from Stuart and his WorldSkills team that competed in Japan; Stuart used this all the time when mentoring WorldSkills champions ‘’Train hard before the competition, focus on the competition and just enjoy the ride because competing internationally is like nothing else you will ever do” I found nothing seemed to faze Stuart and found him to be a good friend; he had an amazing work ethic. I have been blown away with Stuart’s passing and the loss of such an incredible person and husband to his wife.
