![]() ![]() Dear Sophia, Online learning has enabled millions of students to keep learning while schools are closed. But, while there are many benefits to online learning, there are also important concerns around child safety. This is particularly an issue for families and children joining the digital space for the first time. That’s why it’s essential to understand the real risks that children face when being connected as well as the safeguards that can be put in place to help keep children safe. ![]() ![]() Dear Sophia, Over two months ago, we set an ambitious goal. We were determined to raise funds to keep children reading digital books during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. The response was overwhelming. Thanks to supporters like you, we have exceeded our goal of raising $500,000 in generous donations. Here''s what we''ve accomplished with that funding: ![]() • New library of coronavirus books added to our collection • 752,031 books distributed across the globe • 348,301 new In April, nobody knew how long this pandemic would keep children out of school. Today, we realize that children will continue to be impacted for months to come. Sophia, we are so grateful for your support. We hope to raise an additional $10,000 to reach 10,000 additional users during the back-to-school season. Your support can continue to expand our reach of digital reading tools to children across the Global South. With the future of education more uncertain than ever, these children risk falling permanently behind. That’s why your donation today matters.

![]() ![]() Sophia, Do you think online learning can be as effective as in-person education? It’s a question that’s been on a lot of minds lately. Here’s what we’ve found. As I write this, millions of students across the world are having very different “back to school” experiences from what they could have ever imagined. That’s because many students are being taught entirely online as a response to COVID-19. This global experiment in distance learning during the pandemic will certainly change the world of learning as we know it. We’ve found that the success of online learning depends greatly on this: the extent to which interpersonal interactions that usually happen in the classroom, can happen online. Learn more. Sophia what are your thoughts on this? We’d love to hear from you. Please leave us a comment here. Best, Melanie Wise,

![]() ![]() Dear Sophia, The damaging effects on children’s education of COVID-19 school closures continue to be felt across the globe. Especially in more rural areas around the world, the risk is high of permanent gaps in students’ learning. Thankfully, we know that there are people like you who are committed to addressing this challenge. With your support, we have responded rapidly to this crisis by offering a growing collection of high-quality books that students can access from home on mobile phones. Read the story of one father/teacher’s experience with BookSmart in rural Peru here. Thanks to BookSmart, José Luis has been able to keep both his son and his students reading and learning while schools remain closed. He could not be more thrilled at how engaged and excited his students are by the wide variety of stories offered on the app. We couldn’t be prouder to hear Professor José Luis’s story, and we’re so happy to share it with you. After all, this success has been possible thanks to supporters like you, and it is through your commitment to our cause that we are able to continue improving children’s learning experiences in Peru.
