World Energy Week LIVE - recordings now available

Under the theme of Connecting Energy Societies, this year's World Energy Week was an exciting and energising digital event. Over 1500 attendees tuned in and joined the 70 high level speakers engaged actively in regionally focused and thematic sessions.The depth of discussion revealed the challenges and opportunities lying ahead for energy transition, with a resounding emphasis on increasing ambition and wider cooperation running through all the sessions.

For us, World Energy Week LIVE resonated and further amplified the Council's vision to humanise energy. There was widespread recognition that we must bring in the voice of the consumer into energy and work to better understand the demand-side of the equation. We heard a lot of new voices, particularly about the energy needs of billions of people who still lack adequate access to modern energy and about the opportunities in engaging customers and communities, alongside companies and countries in managing the complex process of large-scale energy transition. Are you paying attention to changes that really matter?

As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded globally, it reminded everyone, everywhere of the importance of energy for better lives and a healthy planet. To date, there is still much we do not know about COVID-19 and its implications for society and the economy at large. What we do know, is that the global energy sector is one of the most severely affected. Emerging from crisis and managing global energy transition are not going to be easy.

Using our World Energy Covid Scenarios to 2024, together with the World Energy Transition Radar as starting points for strategic conversations and as decision support tools, energy leaders and their organisations can stress-test and design better post-pandemic strategies.

To support these conversations we have just published the second issue of emerging insights from the World Energy Transition Radar Post-pandemic recovery: towards a more diverse and impactful energy tranisition.

Enhanced decision-making in a post Covid world

This year, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the World Energy Trilemma Index. The World Energy Trilemma Index is our tried and tested leadership energy decision-making tool. By providing an independent and objective rating of a country's energy policy and performance using verified global and country-specific data, it assesses management of three core dimensions: Energy Security, Energy Equity and Environmental Sustainability.

"This has been a turbulent year for societies and economies. Tools such as the well-respected World Energy Trilemma Index are more important than ever as countries, companies and customers start to recover. The index enables individual countries and diverse regions to learn from each other about what's working and what's not in joining-the dots between people, planet and prosperity by managing the connected challenges of energy security, energy affordability and equity and environmental sustainability." says Dr Angela Wilkinson, Secretary General & CEO, World Energy Council.

Francois Austin, Partner and Global Head of Energy, Oliver Wyman adds: "The 2020 Trilemma Index shows that the significantly improved nations are undergoing a faster-paced energy transition. While the impact of COVID likely won't be seen until next year at the earliest, one thing is for sure - top-performing nations achieve their energy goals by balancing policy, corporate action, national resource usage, and changes to individual behavior with environmental concerns. These trends in aggregate as well as at the national and regional levels can give policymakers and business leaders direction to shape energy's future."

How can you use the World Energy Trilemma Index?
The World Energy Trilemma Index enables an informed dialogue between stakeholders about improving countries' energy policies and to learn with and from each other about what's working and what's not. In this way, the Trilemma is not meant to be a static report but is instead designed to be used as a policy pathfinding and decision-making tool. A tool, that assesses not just current energy policy performance but also how performance has improved over time and compares with others to explore how to improve.
