2021 Wood Design Award Deadline Extended!?

Building designers: You have two extra weeks to nominate a project for a 2021 US Wood Design Award! The extended deadline for nominations is October 14, 2020.

?

The awards recognize excellence in wood design, engineering, and construction, as well as innovative projects that showcase attributes of wood such as strength, beauty, versatility, cost effectiveness, and sustainability.

Projects may be submitted in the following 9 categories:

• Multi-Family Wood Design
• Commercial Wood Design - Low-Rise
• Commercial Wood Design - Mid-Rise
• Wood in Schools
• Institutional Wood Design
• Green Building with Wood
• Beauty of Wood
• Wood in Government Buildings
• Durable & Adaptable Wood Structures?

Projects across these categories will also be selected to receive regional awards of excellence. For program rules, category descriptions, and nomination information, please visit http://www.woodworks.org/wood-design-awards/nominate.

Special consideration will be given to recently completed buildings, projects that utilize wood as a dominant structural element, and designs that exemplify new opportunities for wood construction.

Deadline and Eligibility

Award submissions must be received by midnight PT on October 14, 2020. There are no nomination fees and multiple submissions are encouraged. To be eligible, projects and nominated firms must be located in the US and projects must be fully constructed by the original deadline of September 30, 2020. With the exception of the Durability & Adaptability of Wood Structures category, Wood Design Awards apply to new construction only, which includes significant additions. This webinar introduces a new resource developed to address a gap in available knowledge: the U.S. Mass Timber Floor Vibration Design Guide. While it is widely recognized that floor vibration design has a significant impact on cost, there has been little information on how to cost-effectively design mass timber floors for vibration. In addition to introducing the design guide and its contents, this webinar will cover the range of mass timber panel products used for floors, as well as design methodologies, and example calculations.

NEW Options for Tall Timber Buildings in California:

Understanding Codes and Design

New tall mass timber code provisions approved for the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) will allow up to 18 stories of wood construction. The California Building Code (CBC), approved this month, is also poised to permit tall timber buildings but following a slightly different path with California-specific modifications. ?Attend this virtual seminar to learn more.

Podium construction-also known as pedestal or platform construction-typically includes multiple stories of wood framing over another construction style. To leverage wood's cost efficiency, these types of buildings often maximize allowable building size limits with four or five stories of wood framing over one to three stories of steel or concrete. This webinar focuses on how to achieve maximum value with podium construction, while also covering a variety of wood-frame mid-rise building types. Through an overview of code provisions and associated design, detailing, and construction considerations, it is intended to give architects and engineers the knowledge to successfully integrate mid-rise wood buildings into their portfolios. Heights and areas will be discussed, including allowable increases, as will fire-resistive design, detailing for performance, fire-rated assemblies, and more.
