The unusual thing about this particular box is that it's turned from a hybrid blank. Resin casting, a means of molding acrylic material into blanks for turning, has become a very popular in recent years and hybrid blanks are a big part of the trend. "Hybrid" is a term coined for combining wood and resin together to create beautiful and unique designs. You can buy hybrid blanks or make them yourself.

Early in my woodworking career, I lived by the maxim that I would never artificially color the wood I was using. It was my firm belief that the wood should speak for itself and any attempt to add color was unnecessary. In a large part, that belief stemmed from bad experiences that I had with pigment-based stains. Too often I would see the wood grain obscured by a stain application, rather than enhanced.

A popular hardwood among hobbyist woodworkers because of its unique color. Some common uses for Padauk include: veneer, flooring, turned objects, musical instruments, furniture, tool handles, and other small specialty wood objects. Stock is cut to size from quality, kiln-dried stock. 100% clear and sanded on both sides.
Bright yellow when freshly sawn, turning yellow-brown to dark brown to even a reddish-brown. Grain is straight or interlocked with a coarse texture. Amarela machines well, is a pleasure to turn, glues problem free, and finishes beautifully. Common uses include furniture, flooring, cabinet work, and veneer.
Technically not a species of Maple, but a general description of any type of Maple allowed to begin the initial stages of decay, which is then dried to prevent further decay. This partial decay, known as spalting, gives the wood its unique characteristic dark lines and streaks where fungus has begun to attack. It machines and turns well with sharp tools, and it glues and finishes well, but blotches may occur when staining so a preconditioner is recommended.
This threadbox and tap, for cutting external and internal threads in wood, is useful for making clamps, jigs, fixtures, knockdown furniture, toys, and novelties. Hardwood threadbox with turned handles has an aluminum insert to prevent wear and extend the tool life. Available in 1/2 x 8 TPI, 3/4" x 6 TPI, and 1" x 6 TPI sizes. Includes threadbox, regular tap and instructions.
