An action-packed, waking nightmare of relentless brutality and merciless revenge, set against the harsh landscape of rural Australia.  This is a rare chance to watch a home-grown Tasmanian feature film directed by Sam Curtain that demonstrates the talents of our local cast and crew.  Not for the feint-hearted, R 18+. Wide Angle presents this screening with the support of the City of Hobart.

Sydney Film Festival 2020 submissions now open

Entries are now open to features, documentaries and short films for the 2020 Sydney Film Festival. Submissions for the Festival are being accepted through FilmFestivalLife. Closing dates: 31 January 2020 for international productions, 28 February 2020 for Australian productions, Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films, and Documentary Australia Foundation Award. Visit the Sydney Film Festival website for more info & application details.

AFTRS Scholarship - Legal Essentials | Apply by Feb 3

Are you an emerging Producer, Director or Screenwriter who needs to get their head around the exciting world of legal agreements, financing and IP?  Then this course is for you.  

AFTRS (Australian Film and Television Radio School) and Wide Angle Tasmania are offering a scholarship to attend a two day Legal Essentials Workshop in Sydney on March 14 and March 15, 2020. During the two days David Whealy and Elle Curran from DWA Entertainment Lawyers will demystify the essentials, covering the key legal concepts for screen production (film, TV and online).  Read more here. The scholarship includes free enrolment in the course, return flights to Sydney (from Hobart or Launceston) and $200 towards accommodation/transfers/meals.

The GROW program is a series of 6 mentoring meetings designed to help you stay on track and remain focused and accountable as you take your creative business to its next stage. You might be a freelancer ready to solidify the way you work, a partnership looking to act on your plans, or a company ready to hire employees and take on the world.  Read more on our website.

End Game... three months support to work on your screen dream. In 2020 End Game will be offered to 14 Tasmanian filmmakers over two rounds; Round 5 (March 2 - May 29) and Round 6 (June 29 - September 25).

Wide Angle Tasmania provides Tasmanian screen practitioners with the framework and support to work strategically on achieving their dream. End Game will help you to define your long-term screen aspiration and then identify a first step that can be achieved in 3 months.  Each round, filmmakers will be selected to participate in a 3 month programme of goal-setting, peer support, coaching and reflection designed to help you transform your great idea into action. End Game is delivered online to Tasmanian screen practitioners. Participants receive;

• One on one mentoring sessions to shape and evaluate the action plan to achieve your 3 month screen goal
• weekly feedback on your progress
• a network of colleagues undertaking End Game
• access to online goal setting software
• access to online bank of resource to support your goal
• access to production equipment and insurances for those enrolled in the 'short form production stream' of End Game.
• access to WAT SHARES to help achieve the steps identified in your action plan
• a launch event to celebrate your achievements

Wide Angle Residency | Apply by Feb 28

Wide Angle Residency... the keys to the Wide Angle Screen Centre for up to three months to work on your screen venture. The Wide Angle Residency provides Tasmanian screen practitioners with the opportunity to concentrate on their screen project or screen business for a period of between one and three months.  This “gift of time” will allow filmmakers to work without distraction to break new ground and progress their screen venture.  The Wide Angle Residency provides a home base, resources and facilities for individuals or teams of screen practitioners.  What’s on offer:

• Free office space at Wide Angle Screen Centre (6 Washington Street, South Hobart - includes electricity, water and Wi-Fi).
• Free access to the studio/cinema, meeting room, common areas and WAT Film Kit (negotiated at application)

You've got just two days to work on your applications for two excellent opportunities (due Monday Feb 3):

• 6 months mentorship (FREE) with creative + business to work on your screen business (that could be just you as a freelancer, your partnership or your company.  If you have a registered business and you create screen content in Tassie then you are eligible!)
• a weekend in Sydney at AFTRS learning everything you need about legals for screen - flights, course fees and accommodation costs are covered.

We're also super-excited to launch the three short films produced through NERVE 2019 next week.  Jeff Kirkland, Tara Bufton, Ursula Woods, Sam Tooker and Phoenix Rain have worked incredibly hard to produce their first funded short film and we are grateful for the support provided by their mentors Briony Kidd, Emma Wilson, Troy Melville and Mike Gissing.  Many of you will already have received a direct email invitation for one of the four screenings - if not, you can book a ticket to attend on Friday Feb 7.

A big thanks to Emma Wilson who has managed End Game since it first started 18 months ago.  In 2020 we are chuffed to announce that Catherine Pettman will be our coach for the next round of End Game - register your interest to attend the info session or apply now.

Silver Screen is a curated program of iconic and important Australian films screening every month in the comfortable theatre at the Wide Angle Screen Centre (6 Washington Street in South Hobart). This is a great opportunity for audiences to access Australian film, meet other film lovers and hear from the actors, directors and producers at a post film Q&A.

Alex Hryniewicz Masterclass, Mentorship & Screening | March 5 & 6

Keep an eye out for the opportunities available for Tasmanian filmmakers when Alex Hryniewicz (producer from Little Dot Studios) visits Tasmania in early March following his presentation at AIDC. 'Cracking the Code: Cashing in with Online Content.'  
7pm Thurs March 5 Alex will present a series of short form content that has been recently commissioned by his company and speak to the opportunities available to creators.  A great chance to see some amazing works and connect with Alex.

Friday March 6 from 9.30am - 12.30pm Alex will work with a group of documentary creators to workshop distribution possibilities for their projects.
A limited number of one-one mentorship opportunities will be provided to filmmakers working in all genres of filmmaking in the afternoon of Fri March 6.

Resilience Fund 2020 | no closing date

Applications to Australia Council for the Arts Resilience Fund are now open. Artists and arts organisations are encouraged to apply to support their livelihoods, practice and operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 Resilience Fund includes three streams:

Survive - small grants for individuals, groups and organisations to offset or recoup financial losses due to cancelled activity
Adapt - grants for individuals, groups and organisations to adapt their practice and explore new operating models
Create - grants for individuals, groups and organisations to continue to create artistic work and develop creative responses in a time of disruption

Submissions are now open for the Stories in September 2020 Festival - from resident and ex-pat Tasmanian Storytellers. There are five categories:?Visual, Sound, Text, Lock Down and Acceptance. Story Consultation Service?| available now

Any Wide Angle member, new or experienced, can use our free Story Consultation Service to help develop your personal film project. ?The Story Consultation service starts with a one-on-one meeting (at the Wide Angle Office or by phone) with Robert Watson,?an ex-studio creative executive who advised on developing screenplays performed by Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe, Judi Dench, Matt Damon and so on. Robert Watson has worked with writers of diverse ages, genders, ethnic backgrounds and genres.

This meeting is an ideal time to discuss your idea, receive some advice and work out whether you are ready for regular mentorship to develop your film project.?To access this free service for Wide Angle members, just give us a call on 6223 8344 or send us an email telling us that you are interested... and an idea of days and times that you are available to book a session. ?

Recently, Wide Angle members have taken advantage of this free service ?to develop diverse projects. Some projects are starting out and others are already very developed. Both kinds can benefit from story mentoring. Members'' projects cover a wide range of stories, from true-life to many kinds of fiction.? Many kinds of format are mentored such as?short film scripts,?television series,?feature movies and?miniseries. ?Your project starts with an idea. Even at idea stage, it is never too early to seek advice on developing the idea. If you want help learning how to write a screenplay, this is for you. Just launched - a new service offered by Lifeline to provide FREE support and counselling to those in the creative sector (and their family members). Please spread the word amongst your networks that this service is available - it's super simple to access. just book a session online or make a phone call - no referral needed.

Trained support workers can assist with issues such as relationships, financial stress, health, trauma, substance abuse and other addictions, communication problems and coping with change.

ABC Fresh Start Fund | Closes June 4

In response to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the independent production sector, the ABC has launched a $5 million development fund. The Fresh Start Fund, will focus on developing original new content for broadcast channels and iview, spanning multiple genres, including drama, comedy, children's, factual, music and the arts.? The Government is seeking community and industry feedback on options to support Australian stories on our screens in a modern, multi-platform environment.?Why they want your input: to hear from anyone who has an interest in the media and screen sector and to get your views on the 'Supporting Australian Stories on Our Screens' options paper. You can voice your opinion by providing a submission to this public consultation process. Wide Angle Residency... the keys to the Wide Angle Screen Centre for up to three months to work on your screen venture.?The Wide Angle Residency provides Tasmanian screen practitioners with the opportunity to concentrate on their screen project or screen business for a period of between one and three months.? This "gift of time" will allow filmmakers to work without distraction to break new ground and progress their screen venture.? The Wide Angle Residency provides a home base, resources and facilities for individuals or teams of screen practitioners. ?What's on offer:

• Free office space at Wide Angle Screen Centre (6 Washington Street, South Hobart - includes electricity, water and Wi-Fi).

Distribution Masterclass with Alex Hryniewicz?| Fri March 6

Join Alex in a hands-on masterclass where he will workshop the distribution possibilities of the documentary projects presented by participants.? This masterclass is an ideal opportunity for documentary filmmakers to present their project and receive editorial feedback on how their project aligns with what audiences are looking for on different digital platforms. A benefit of WAT membership is that you can now join our Writers Group. WAT Writers Group meets weekly at 6 Washington St, South Hobart and for those outside Hobart, by video conference. WAT Writers Group is coordinated by ex-movie studio writer executive, Robert Watson. Whether you''re new to filmmaking, a bookworm who wonders how novels and plays are turned into screenplays, a filmmaker with an untamed film script, or a pro from any screen field, WAT Writers Group provides a social setting to increase your screen knowledge and skills - and meet other film creatives.

You can come to explore film theory or practise skills that greatly improve (or kick-start) your own screen project. It is your choice to discuss your project or keep your writing entirely confidential. Perhaps you only have an idea, or you are stuck with a screen project in any format or genre. Perhaps this is a good way to meet others or achieve a creative goal. Enjoy the discipline of casual, regular meetings with good, creative energy. Your writers group coordinator Robert Watson is an ex-university screenwriting lecturer, has held elder permission for Aboriginal projects, has worked in Asia, the U.S. and Europe and is a qualified early childhood teacher. He comes from Ian Robinson''s Melbourne writers group that first introduced Hero/Heroine Journey Theory and other screen analysis skills to Australian writers at the Writers'' Guild conference.

Our ''cafe society'' Writers Group meets every Monday between 1pm and 2.30pm. You are invited to meet regularly or drop -in when you''re free. If you are interested in joining our Writers Group but can''t meet on Mondays, please let us know your preferred meet-up times.

Masterclass with Sue Maslin | Thurs April 2

Wide Angle Tasmania is pleased to host a masterclass with Sue Maslin - one of Australia's most successful screen producers. Her latest feature,?The Dressmaker(2015), grossed more than $20m and became one of Australia's biggest box office smash hits. Other feature credits include?Road to Nhill,?Japanese Story, winner of 2003 AFI Award for Best Film,?Dominick Dunne: After the Party?and?Hunt Angels, winner of the 2006 AFI Award for Best Feature Documentary Film. Sue is Adjunct Professor at RMIT's School of Media & Communication and a recognised industry leader. Sue was the inaugural recipient of the Jill Robb Award for Outstanding Leadership, Achievement and Service to the Victorian Screen Industry and currently serves as President of the Natalie Miller Fellowship reflecting her ongoing commitment to gender diversity both on and off?screen.

The Show Must Go On - Wellness Roadshow Hobart?| Thurs April 2

Following the ABC television premiere of documentary film The Show Must Go On, we will be presenting a Wellness Roadshow, that will tour nationally over the next twelve months.?The Wellness Roadshow event will take place in Hobart on Thursday April 2, 2020 at the Village Cinema Hobart, supported by Wide Angle Tasmania. This is a free event and will include a screening of the film, followed by a panel which will be moderated by Sue Maslin and will include Ben Steel (writer/director) and Julia Edwards (Entertainment Assistant). The panel will discuss the issues raised in the film along with tools and resources available to individuals. To continue the conversation the Wellness Roadshow will tour nationally facilitating further screenings, conversations, panels and events with the aim to increase awareness of mental health issues within the entertainment industry.?

The Show Must Go On is the first film to tell the story of the mental health of the 42,000 people working in the Australian arts and entertainment industry. While ''show business'' is often seen as glamorous, fun, exciting and well paid, recent and alarming world-first research from Entertainment Assist and Victoria University paints a darker picture for entertainment workers. Anxiety symptoms are 10 times higher, sleep disorders are 7 times higher and symptoms of depression are 5 times higher than the national average. Suicide attempts in the industry are double the national average.?The film follows former Home and Away actor and debut documentary filmmaker Ben Steel on a soul-searching investigation into why are there so many arts and entertainment workers developing and struggling with mental wellbeing issues. Ben shares his intimate experiences living with depression and anxiety for the past few years, and along the way, we are witness to his intimate conversations with key creatives and crew, actors, dancers, musicians, performers - many of them household names - who have likewise struggled and how they have survived. ?While this film may not reach and save every life, we hope it will have enough impact to at least save one, and that it will spark much-needed conversations about mental health.?

Equipment hires resume today?| May 18?

We''re working hard to keep you safe and prevent the spread of covid-19 when you hire equipment from Wide Angle. Our staff clean and disinfect each piece of equipment when it is returned from a hire and wear gloves when moving or checking the gear. We''re also aiming to store equipment for at least three days between hires. We''ll tell you the date that it was last handled.

Venue bookings resume today?| May 18

It''ll be great to see people back in the Screen Centre and using the space to create, share and watch films! We have some restrictions on how many people can be in the building, and we''ll keep updating the website with that info here. We''ve also updated our terms and conditions so that you''ll know how to keep people safe at events that you run in the space and we''ve reduced the cost of hiring our spaces during Stage 1 restrictions.

Wide Angle Tasmania provides Tasmanian screen practitioners with the framework and support to work strategically on achieving a screen dream.?End Game will help you to define your long-term screen aspiration and then identify a first step that can be achieved in 3 months. Filmmakers will be selected to participate in a 3 month programme of goal-setting, peer support, coaching and reflection designed to help you transform your great idea into action.?End Game is delivered online to Tasmanian screen practitioners.

This is your chance to let others know a bit more about what you''re doing - or reach out to potential collaborators. ?Inspire us, challenge us, entertain us! You''re also welcome to join in and listen to what''s going on.
