Dear WBGO Family,
We hope this letter finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy.
Over forty years ago I was one of those that helped to create WBGO, and I served as the inaugural General Manager for a decade. Now I'm back at WBGO as Interim President.
Through all those years, my appreciation for your loyalty, interest, encouragement and financial support has continued to grow. Having an engaged community of music lovers - working together for the good of the station - has always been one of our deepest dreams.
As members of the WBGO community, I want to give you a brief update on the state of WBGO.
OVERALL. The station is weathering the challenge of the greatest crisis of our lifetime with determination and resolution, trying to remain as unchanged as possible. Although normal over the air listener patterns have been disrupted, we are experiencing a huge increase in use of our streaming and social media. We see our primary responsibility right now as being a steady, reliable partner to you in a world turned upside down.
WBGO'S EMPLOYEES. All administrative staff began working remotely around March 15. After some hasty research, we discovered and quickly installed a remote broadcasting system that allowed our announcers and newscasters to work remotely as well. It is an "almost live" system - meaning the voices you hear are on a short, time delay. But overall, we are pleased that we are able to keep everyone in the WBGO family safe and healthy, as well as staying on the air with very few changes.
MUSIC. Our music philosophy has remained unchanged during the last few months. Unfortunately, since we are working remotely and relying on a partially digitized music library, announcers are somewhat constricted in the amount of music available for play. However, we have brought back Steve Williams, WBGO's former program director, to work with announcers to help present the best music and offer a sense of comfort and companionship. The response from listeners has been gratifying with hundreds of love letters from all over the world. And we are very excited to announce the return of Rhonda Hamilton to the WBGO airwaves. Tune in and follow us on social media for all the details.
NEWS. During this crisis, we have added additional locally produced newscasts, including updates from local government leaders, as well as additional NPR newscasts. We'll decide in the next few months whether to go back to our pre-crisis news schedule.
FINANCES. Our finances currently are "tough and vulnerable." We started off the year strong before the crisis hit. Although we have seen most of our underwriting from concerts, clubs and restaurants disappear, we have been fortunate to receive PPP funding and several special foundation grants. And your generous membership support has made a huge difference and buoyed our spirits. But we expect finances to get more difficult before they get better. Your continued support will be vital as we head into the fall, when we will hold our September Membership Drive.
THE FUTURE. Although times are out of balance now and new technologies will continue to offer new opportunities and challenges, our basic values at WBGO remain the same: respect for musicians, an appreciation of jazz in all its traditions, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and an acknowledgement that the vibrancy of the WBGO community depends on all of us doing our part to the make the station successful.
Thank you so much for being part of the WBGO community. We hope you and your loved ones remain safe and healthy.
I would love to hear your comments and suggestions on how we can make WBGO better and stronger.
All best wishes,
|
