Health District Announces Second Round of Drive-Through Flu Shot Clinics
No appointment required, save time and fill out paperwork in advance

?

Reno, Nev. Oct. 5, 2020 -The Washoe County Health District announced three more drive-through flu vaccination clinics this month at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center.

The dates and times for the drive-through flu shots are:

Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon
Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon

No appointment is required. The Reno-Sparks Livestock Event Center is located at 1350 N. Wells Ave in Reno. Use the entrance at the intersection of Wells Ave and Sadleir Way (see map here).

Flu shots are recommended for anyone 6 months and older. Those under 18 who want a flu shot must have a guardian present. ?

Flu shots are free with most insurance plans (remember to bring your insurance card). Those without insurance will be vaccinated at no cost. The high-dose senior flu shot will not be available at the above clinics.

Speed up the flu-shot process, fill out forms in advance

To save time and fill out forms in advance, download, print and fill out the HIPAA Acknowledgement Form and Offsite Screening Questionnaire and bring to the event. Each person who receives a flu shot must have those forms filled out.

Hometown Health will also have drive-through flu shot clinics (which includes high-dose senior flu shot) at the Livestock Event Center this month, as well as other locations. See the schedule here.

More than 1,000 people took advantage of the drive-through flu shot clinics in September. The drive-through method is safe for staff and patients. The same drive-through process will likely be used for COVID-19 vaccinations when they're available.

The single best way to avoid getting the flu is to get vaccinated each year, but there are other preventive measures everyone should practice to ward-off the flu and other illnesses:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Cough and sneeze into your sleeve or a tissue
Wash your hands often
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
Wear a facial covering

If you are not able to attend our drive-thru events, you can schedule an appointment to get a flu shot at the Health District Immunization clinic at 1001 E. 9^th Street, Building B by calling 775-328-2402.

Reno, Nev. August 31, 2020. The following are highlights from today's Washoe County Board of County Commissioners meeting:

?

1. Washoe County Sheriff's Office presented quarterly report on welfare and safety of inmates.?Washoe County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Jeffery Clark presented the Board of County Commissioners with a Detention Facility Status Report. Chief Deputy Clark spotlighted the increase in the Detention Facility's mental health population, special watch cells regularly being at capacity and the number of suicides averted. He also discussed several new initiatives and pilot programs in the facility, focusing on the Veterans Barracks. Chief Deputy Clark also highlighted steps taken to mitigate COVID-19 within the jail, including the establishment of an isolation/quarantine unit, video arraignments and the testing of inmates before being transferred to general housing.

?

"I think that this is an incredible cost savings for the Sheriff's Office to offer these video arraignments, by not having to transport these inmates. It's a very efficient and effective way to deal with those arraignments," Commissioner Vaughn Hartung said. "The jail has become our largest mental health facility in northern Nevada. We have to do something about that."

?

2. Commissioners approved amended budgets to incorporate CARES Act grants. The Washoe County District Board of Health accepted a grant of just over $1 million through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) of 2020 to carry out surveillance, epidemiology, mitigation, and other COVID-19 response activities. The commission approved the amended budget with the grant funding incorporated at today's meeting. In a similar action, the commission approved an amended budget that incorporated $8.1 million in grant funding to support the District Board of Health's COVID-19 activities.

3. Commissioners approved an agreement that aims to help seniors with emergency housing. An agreement between Washoe County and the Nevada Housing Division of the State of Nevada Department of Business and Industry will provide support for senior citizens and families that are in danger of becoming homeless. Commissioners unanimously approved the agreement and the accompanying $181,341 grant, which will help seniors in need of assistance with utilities, security deposits, rent or a mortgage payment. The agreement is retroactive to July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2023.

Additionally, the board accepted a sub-grant award from the State of Nevada, Division of Child and Family Services, in the amount of $1 million for services related to the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA).

Reno/Sparks, NV - The Regional Information Center is releasing data related to businesses where people with COVID-19 visited while infectious as a reminder that COVID-19 transmission in Washoe County remains high.

The data below does not indicate where a person contracted COVID-19 and should not be interpreted as such.

COVID-19 antibody (seroprevalence) project update - residents who were invited to participate asked to respond to WCHD
The Washoe County Health District is asking residents who were selected at random to participate in the COVID-19 antibody (seroprevalence) project to respond to the letter and sign up to get the COVID-19 antibody test.
?
Seventy-one people conducted an antibody test on Saturday at the Health District. Roughly 150 residents have signed up for the project - 290 are needed to make it scientifically relevant. Letters were sent to more than 2,000 residences two weeks ago and follow-up letters were mailed last week. Instructions on how to participate are detailed on the letter.

The goal of the study is to determine the prevalence of COVID-19 in our community. The testing is free. Only residents who received the letter can participate and those who respond will be entered into a drawing for a $50 Visa gift card.

Health District Recommends
Thanksgiving Gatherings Only Include Household Members
COVID-19 spike expected, highest risk for those with underlying health conditions

Nov. 12, 2020. Reno/Sparks, NV -?The Washoe County Health District is recommending that residents refrain from attending or hosting any Thanksgiving gatherings with people outside of your household due to risk of COVID-19 transmission and the complications it can have on vulnerable populations.
?
With Thanksgiving two weeks away, the Health District urges residents to maintain gatherings with members of your household and find ways to spend time with friends and family in a non-contact setting, such as through phone or virtually. The recommendation also includes avoiding air travel.
?
"We understand the historical and traditional significance of Thanksgiving and know this is a difficult time for many," District Health Officer Kevin Dick said. "We anticipate increased community spread during Thanksgiving due to social gatherings. My fear is that it will adversely impact our elderly residents and those with underlying health conditions. My plea to you is to think about those in your life who fit that category, whether it's your parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, grandparents or even great grandparents. I urge you to make that sacrifice to protect them."

COVID-19 is spreading rapidly in Washoe County and has led to 212 deaths since March. The risk to the elderly and those with underlying health conditions like obesity and hypertension are significant.

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has defined underlying health conditions that can lead to higher risk for COVID-19 implications. They include:

Chronic kidney disease
COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
Heart conditions (heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies)

The CDC has also recommended safer ways to celebrate Thanksgiving if you plan to gather with non-household members. Wearing a face covering, maintaining social distancing of 6 feet (keep in mind for chairs and tables as well) and frequent hand washing are the main ones. Other safe measures include:

Limit gathering in kitchen or other food-prep areas
Use single-use options, like salad dressing and condiment packets, and disposable items like food containers, plates, and utensils
Eat outdoors or keep windows open indoors, if weather permits
Have guests bring their own food and drinks
Communicate expectations ahead of time

Public Swimming Pools in Washoe County Can Open Friday

Certified Pool Operators allowed to self-open under Health District guidance

?

Reno, Nev. May 27, 2020. The Washoe County Health District (WCHD) is allowing public pools to reopen Friday May 29, 2020, under the Governor's guidance to enter Phase 2 of the state's Roadmap to Recovery reopening plan, upon completion and submission of a self-opening checklist.?
?

Under the governor's guidance, swimming pools and aquatic facilities may open on Friday at 50 percent capacity. Locker rooms at these facilities and hot tubs must remain closed. Masks or face coverings should be worn by all employees except lifeguards. Masks or face coverings are not a requirement for the public, and are not advised in the water, but the Health District urges everyone to wear them in public and practice social distancing to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
?

The Health District's Environmental Health Services division, which permits all public swimming pools and aquatic facilities in Washoe County, is allowing aquatic facilities to self-open on Friday as long as the following objectives are met by each facility's Certified Pool Operator, which is a position each facility must have in order to operate to the?public. Those objectives are:

??

Occupancy, as set by the fire marshal, must not exceed 50% or more than 50 people
Water chemistry must be tested and deemed safe for use
Pool chemicals must be stored safely
Lifeguards must be properly trained, and their safety equipment must be made available
Minimum of 2 days of continuous chemical circulation and stabilization prior to allowing bathers in the pool

The Washoe County Health District has modified normal operations to respond to the COVID-19 public health crisis in Washoe County. In normal circumstances, the Health District would conduct these routine inspections before a pool is opened for the season.

The Health District is allowing this flexibility to expedite self-opening, recognizing the responsibility that the facilities and Certified Pool Operators have to maintain the safety of their guests. The Health District will resume routine inspections this year to ensure compliance with state and local regulations.

Nevada National Guard for Veterans Day
Guard support has been critical to COVID-19 response in Washoe County

Nov. 11, 2020. Reno/Sparks, NV -?The Washoe County Health District is publicly thanking the Nevada National Guard for its critical support during the COVID-19 response in Washoe County.
?
All Guard members supporting the response in Washoe County have the day off Wednesday in observance of Veterans Day. The Washoe County Test Site will be closed, but you can still schedule a test here?(En espa?ol).?
?
The Guard has been embedded in the COVID-19 response in Washoe County, which has included seven-day a week operation since March. As many as 100 Guard members have been deployed to help in Washoe County in what has been the largest state activation in Nevada National Guard history. The duties have included:
?

Washoe County COVID-19 Test Site: The Guard assisted with overall logistics, traffic flow, registration, security, test administration and sample preservation
Contact Tracing & Disease Investigation: Interviewed COVID-19 positive residents to limit disease spread, provided critical resources, answered questions and concerns, and assisted with data entry
COVID-19 Call Center: The first line of contact for many residents, scheduling COVID-19 tests, answering COVID-19-related questions and providing other resources

"The Nevada National Guard has been an absolutely critical part of the COVID-19 response," Washoe County District Health Officer Kevin Dick said. "The men and women of the Guard integrated with the Health Branch very early on in the pandemic and their commitment never wavered. We're extremely proud to call them colleagues and thankful for all they've done and continue to do."

The Nevada National Guard is scheduled to come off orders in mid-December and the Health District is working on that transition, though it's possible orders could be extended at the State and Federal level. No decision has been made.
?
While hopeful for an extension - as COVID-19 cases, transmission and hospitalizations continue to rise - the Health District is extremely grateful for the countless hours of service done so far and to Governor's Sisolak's office for making the Guard available to help.
?
"The Guard has a 'Will do anything to help' mentality and have been an excellent source of support," said James English, Regional Operations Chief/Health Branch Director, COVID-19 Response. "The Guard knows Incident Command Systems (ICS) structure inside and out, which allowed for easy integration into our response. They communicate clearly, work around the clock and are used to performing in adverse climates and locations. I cannot thank them enough."? ????

Health District to Conduct Second Aerial Mosquito Abatement
?Helicopter larviciding application to reduce mosquito populations

Reno, Nev. Aug. 17, 2020 - The Washoe County Health District (WCHD) will conduct an aerial larviciding application on Wednesday, Aug. 19, to address mosquitos in Washoe County.

The Health District's Vector-Borne Diseases Program organizes the application of larvicide, which will cover approximately 800 acres in Washoe County from the North?Valleys to Washoe Valley.

The application consists of small, granules that contain a naturally occurring bacteria, which prevents the emergence of adult mosquitos. Halting the growth of biting mosquitos will help limit the spread of arboviruses like West Nile Virus (WNV), a virus commonly spread to people through mosquito bites.

?

The Health District may conduct additional applications (weather dependent) in the coming months to reduce adult mosquito populations; however, health officials suggest taking steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitos during the late-summer and fall months:

?

Wear long sleeve shirts and long pants in mosquito prone areas. Especially in early morning and evening hours when mosquitos are most active
Use mosquito repellents, applying a layer directly on skin, and one on clothing for maximum protection
Keep window and door screens in good repair to prevent mosquitos from entering homes
Clear areas around living spaces of any free-standing water and containers that can hold even small amounts of water like pet bowls and planters. These may become mosquito breeding sources.
Vaccinate horses for Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV)

The Vector-Borne Diseases Program has mosquito fish available for ponds/fountains, troughs and other large water containers. The small minnow-sized fish feed on mosquito larvae and prevent them from hatching into mosquitos. If you are experiencing biting mosquitos, call the Vector-Borne Diseases Program at 775-328-2434, and staff will investigate the source of the adult mosquitos.

Reno, Nev. May 14, 2020. With the recently unveiled Washoe County Phase 1 Guidance, some park amenities will reopen, while others will remain closed. Washoe County Regional Parks & Open Space shares updated Parks & Open Space information:

WHAT'S OPEN:

As of May 14, 2020, all parks, trails and open spaces remain open. As of May 9, 2020, all park restrooms and trash services have been reopened. Additionally, as of May 1, 2020 both Washoe Golf Course and Sierra Sage Golf Course are open for play, as well as tennis court and pickleball courts. However, visitors must:

Continue to follow social distancing practices, maintaining at least 6 feet away from non-household persons.
Limit gathering of group of 10 or fewer people.

Additionally, while trails are open and busier than ever, the Peavine Trail has been temporarily re-vamped into a directional trial system to limit contact with people and encourage social distancing. For details about the Peavine Trail including a map, click here.

This Friday, May 15, 2020, the Washoe County Regional Shooting Facility is scheduled to reopen to the public with modified operations to public and specialty ranges to comply with the Phase 1 reopening directive.

All visitors and staff must wear a face covering at the point of sale in the office. Members of the public should remain in their vehicle until directed to approach the office.
Members of the public will not have access to the classroom area.
The range will be limited to 50 percent capacity, with every other shooting bench open.
The shooting benches will be disinfected between each use.
Members of the public must provide their own ear and eye protection, rentals will not be available. Disposable ear protection will be available for sale.
Social distancing guidelines will be in effect at all times at the shooting facility.

Case of MIS-C reported in Washoe County
Serious multisystem inflammatory syndrome confirmed; case is not contagious

?

Reno, Nev. Sept. 11, 2020. The Washoe County Health District is reporting a pediatric case of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a rare disease that leads to adverse health impacts. This is the first MIS-C case in Washoe County.
?
The case previously tested positive for COVID-19 and recovered, but then came down with symptoms and was hospitalized. The symptoms can include fever, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes and fatigue, and can vary from child to child.
?
MIS-C is a rare but severe condition where the body's organs become inflamed. MIS-C can occur approximately 2-4 weeks after the onset of COVID-19 in children and adolescents under the age of 20. The risk factors that result in increased likelihood for developing MIS-C are not well understood.
?
According to early studies by CDC, approximately two-thirds of MIS-C cases did not have preexisting medical conditions prior to onset of MIS-C. Early identification, diagnoses and treatment are important to prevent long-lasting impacts to internal organs.
?
"This re-enforces the importance of testing for COVID-19 for everyone, especially children," said Kevin Dick, District Health Officer for Washoe County. "Given that children are most likely to contract MIS-C, it's imperative that we keep our children safe by taking safety precautions with COVID-19, such as wearing a face covering, social distancing and washing your hands frequently. Our thoughts are with the child and their family and we hope for a speedy recovery."

The CDC says to seek emergency care right away if your child is showing any of these emergency warning signs of MIS-C:

Rash
Abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea
Bloodshot eyes, or "pink eye"
Fever
Trouble breathing

Health District: A negative COVID-19 test is not required
to be released from isolation or quarantine
Health District urges employers not to require a negative COVID-19 test
to return to work

Nov. 20, 2020. Reno/Sparks, NV -?The Washoe County Health District is reminding residents that a negative COVID-19 test is not required to be released from isolation or quarantine.
?
The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services sent out a technical bulletin on Nov. 19, 2020 reaffirming guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that a non-test-based strategy is recommended. This direction also indicates that most employers should not require employees to get a negative test to return to work.?

Requiring negative test results not only further strains testing resources, but also may prevent employees from returning to work for weeks or months after they are no longer infectious.
?
That recommendation of a non-test-based strategy states that the following measures should be met to be released from quarantine/isolation:
?

At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared, and
At least 24 hours have passed since last fever without the use of fever-reducing medications, and
Symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath) have improved

?

Other important COVID-19 information that the public should be aware of:

The Health District only notifies residents of negative COVID-19 test results if they were done at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center. If you got tested elsewhere, the place that tested you will notify you. Do not call the Health District looking for those results.
The Health District urges people to wait 2-3 days from when they started getting symptoms to get tested for COVID-19.

Bars in Washoe County Set To Reopen Next Week
Regional partners are working with bar owners on safe reopening procedures

?

Reno/Sparks, NV - The regional entities in Washoe County are working with the Governor's Office on finalizing COVID-19 health and safety measures to reopen bars, taverns, pubs, breweries and wineries in Washoe County next week. The actual date and time of opening has not been established.
?
The local jurisdictions (Cities of Reno and Sparks, Washoe County) partnered with the Washoe County Bar/Taproom Coalition, a group of bar owners engaged to reopen bars safely, to communicate the updated COVID-19 mitigation measures, and a meeting will be set up with bar owners to go over the COVID-19 health and safety measures.
?
The Nevada Mitigation and Management Task Force on Thursday approved the Washoe County COVID-19 Action Plan, which had requested that bars reopen in Washoe County. The Task Force requested additional information to support the plan, but allowed bars to open no later than Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 11:59 p.m.
?
The Washoe County Health District urged the Task Force to reopen bars because of the disproportionate number of COVID-19 cases in Washoe County related to private parties and gatherings at residences. The Health District argued that bars with strict COVID-19 mitigation measures in place (face coverings, social distancing, etc.) could be a safer alternative.
?
Once the COVID-19 health and safety measures are finalized, approved and a date and time of reopening is established, the Regional Information Center will notify the public and bar owners of the new information.

Washoe County ballots to be mailed Oct. 2

Washoe County voters will begin seeing General Election ballots in their mailboxes the first week of October, the Washoe County Registrar of Voters announced today.

?

Ballots are scheduled to be mailed on October 2, a month before the General Election.

?

"We pushed our printer to meet an earlier deadline but they are facing exceptionally high demand. The stipulations outlined in AB4, passed in the Legislature's Special Session in August, has required us to make some quick changes to our operations and information, but we are still on target to deliver ballots on schedule," Registrar Deanna Spikula said. "We had hoped to get them out sooner, as early as this week, but we will stick to our original planned delivery date of October 2."

?

AB4 stipulates changes to how this General Election will operate, and requires certain information on registrars' websites to be updated. Washoe County has been making updates to comply with the law and stay in alignment with the Nevada Secretary of State.

?

"Certain changes required by AB4 are only applicable to this election, so we are working diligently to maintain the necessary long-term information on our website while updating the language specific to November's election," Spikula said.

?

Voters can expect to see ballots arrive in their mailboxes soon after the October 2 mailing date. The county has a new ballot-tracking service this election called BallotTrax, which allows voters to sign up for alerts to track their ballot from the moment it is mailed to the moment it is counted, much like tracking an online shopping shipment. Voters can sign up for BallotTrax here: https://washoe.ballottrax.net/voter/.

Washoe County voters can return their ballots via mail, or drop them off at any drop-off location in the county.?The ballot drop-offs are staffed and there is a strict chain of custody to control ballot security and ensure that every ballot is accounted for every step of the way.

Health District Issues Recommendations for Safe Halloween, D?a?de los Muertos Celebrations
Trick-or-treating not recommended due to COVID-19

?

Reno/Sparks, NV - The Washoe County Health District is not recommending traditional celebrations or gatherings with people outside of your immediate household for Halloween, D?a de los Muertos and Nevada Day based on the high level of COVID-19 transmission in the community. Instead, it's recommended that residents find other lower-risk activities to celebrate those holidays.
?
"The situation with COVID-19 right now in Washoe County is extremely serious and I cannot in good faith recommend any activity that could lead to increase COVID-19 transmission," said Kevin Dick, District Health Officer for Washoe County. "The upward trend in COVID-19 cases the past two weeks has been alarming. We know that COVID-19 can be spread with close interaction and can cause serious illness and even death. What we don't know are the health impacts to individuals later on. Because of this, I cannot recommend trick-or-treating or any holiday celebration with people outside of one's household where masks and social distancing can't be enforced."
?
COVID-19 cases have been trending upward not only nationally but especially in Washoe County. The 7-day moving average for new cases per day is at 126.8, which is a record since the pandemic began and a 57% increase in new cases over only the past two weeks. Another record that was set yesterday was the number of active cases with 1,526. The White House Task Force and the local COVID Risk Meter both place the County as high risk of COVID-19 transmission and the State County Tracker has Washoe County flagged for elevated disease transmission.
?
The Health District's guidance is consistent with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) on holiday celebrations, which includes risk categories for trick-or-treating and other activities. More information on safe trick-or-treating?can be seen here. ?

Washoe County staff releases updated proposed standards for short-term rentals

County Commissioners asked to introduce and hold first reading Aug. 25

Reno, Nev. Aug. 10, 2020. Washoe County officials are in the process of establishing standards for short-term rentals (STRs) in unincorporated Washoe County, including Incline Village/Crystal Bay.

After several months of research, public engagement, and analysis, draft standards for STRs were presented to the Board of County Commissioners in February 2020. Board direction included updates to standards for occupancy, signage, inspections, accessory dwellings, and other topics. An updated draft reflecting that direction is scheduled to be presented to the Board at their Aug. 25, 2020 meeting, which is expected to be held via Zoom. When the meeting agenda is available, it will be posted online here and include details about options for participating.

Winners will get public recognition; deadline to apply is Dec. 31

Dec. 3, 2020. Reno-Sparks, Nev. The Washoe County Health District (WCHD) is excited to announce the inaugural Excellence in Food Safety Awards. The Awards recognize Washoe County food facilities that exceed established regulations and go above and beyond to demonstrate their commitment to long-term food safety.

The Excellence in Food Safety Awards will be given annually starting this January. Any food facility that meets the program's criteria is invited to participate. The deadline for business owners to submit an application is Dec. 31 for 2020, and in the future will be Dec. 1. Complete the form online on this page.

There is no limit to the number of food establishments that can receive this annual award.

To acknowledge the achievement of maintaining the highest standards of food safety in our community, recipients of the award will receive the following: an award certificate, an Excellence in Food Safety Award logo window cling for the year of the award, a digital logo to display on webpages and social media, and recognition on the WCHD website and the Washoe Eats smartphone app.

10 additional COVID-19 cases confirmed in Washoe County

Reno/Sparks, Nev. March 26, 2020.?The Washoe County Health District is reporting 10 additional cases of COVID-19 in Washoe County, moving the total number of cases to 67.
?
The COVID-19 Regional Information Team launched its website,?www.covid19Washoe.com, and on the site includes a new dashboard that details how many cases there are in Washoe County, broken down by age and gender.
?
The total number of cases that have fully recovered remains at four.
?
Why we can't test every Washoe County resident for COVID-19
The Washoe County Health District understands that residents are concerned about the lack of COVID-19 testing in our community. The Health District, following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the State of Nevada, is only testing those who are the highest risk of having COVID-19 and spreading COVID-19.?
?
Widespread community testing is not realistic because we currently do not have the capacity or supplies to collect samples from, or perform a COVID-19 test on, everyone in Washoe County. In addition, a negative COVID-19 test result does not prevent you from contracting the disease later on. Taking extreme safety precautions to prevent contracting COVID-19 is much more effective than outright community testing at this time.

We ask that people in "Stay Home For Nevada," wash hands often with soap and water, avoid touching your face, avoid contact with people who are sick and cough or sneeze into your sleeve. Click here for more info. We will continue to conduct drive-through testing for high-risk residents and work with our local hospitals to conduct as many sample collections as possible.

You've heard it: one of the best ways to prevent the spread of the flu and COVID-19 (coronavirus) is to wash your hands with soap and water.? In fact, a recent MIT study stated that by boosting handwashing could slow risk of spread by up to 69%. Waste Management Updates
Customers attempting to reach customer service by phone are not likely to get a response until the end of the week. Over the past week Waste Management has transitioned 20,000 employees to work from home. This was unanticipated rollout of technology in response to a call for social distancing. WM Customer Experience teams are working relentlessly and expect Residential home-based call center to be fully functioning by Friday, March 27. Celebrate Labor Day Safely
Recommendation is to avoid large gatherings to reduce potential COVID-19 spread

Reno/Sparks, NV - With the Labor Day holiday approaching, the Regional Information Center is asking residents to avoid large gatherings to help the region continue its effort to limit the spread of COVID-19.
?
The region is averaging about 60 new COVID-19 cases per day and through contract tracing we are seeing that transmission of the virus is still extensive. While the numbers are trending down due to people wearing masks and socially distancing, past holiday trends have shown that the numbers can spike quickly.
?
"We understand the importance of Labor Day and celebrating our American workers," said District Health Officer Kevin Dick. "To support our workers, we need to have low levels of disease transmission, and we don't have that right now. In order to have businesses open, and workers back to work to make a living to support their families, we need to be cautious with our gatherings this holiday weekend and celebrate safely and responsibly with members of our households."

COVID-19 cases rose after previous holidays like Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. The Governor's directive is for gatherings to be no more than 50, but Washoe County's recommendation is to limit the number of people in a public gathering to 25 people or less, and to 10 people or less for private gatherings. ?For a situation like a Labor Day celebration, gatherings of fewer than 10 offer the best chance to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
?
When gathering with people from outside your household, it's imperative that masks be worn and social distancing of 6 feet be maintained. If you plan to travel, please follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

WHAT: National Census Day is observed nationwide on April 1 as a day in which all individuals are to be counted in the Census. Nevada Census 2020 encourages every Nevadan to participate and count every person living in their home on April 1 on their Census forms.

In light of public health concerns, it's important Nevadans know they can be counted without leaving home. Now easier than ever, Nevadans can complete the Census through one of three safe, confidential and quick ways from the comfort of their own homes: online (www.census.nv.gov), via phone (844-330-2020; for Spanish 844-468-2020), or mail in the hard copy questionnaire. Health District Won't Allow Large Events of Over 250 Due to Lack of Adequate Health Infrastructure
Determination based on resource capacity as a result of elevated COVID-19 transmission

?

Reno/Sparks, NV - The Washoe County Health District will not allow large gatherings or events with more than 250 people in Washoe County for 30 days due to the lack of adequate health infrastructure as a result of elevated community-wide COVID-19 disease transmission.
?
The Health District lacks capacity to review COVID-19 Large Gathering Safety & Preparedness Plans per the Governor's Directive 033 as well as maintain rapid COVID-19 disease investigation and contact tracing.
?
All public gatherings of up to 250 people remain allowable under directive 033.
?
The Health District will assess COVID-19 transmission levels 30 days after gatherings of up to 250 individuals have occurred and re-evaluate the health infrastructure capacity. However, recognizing that outdoor venues with fixed seating pose lower risks of COVID-19 transmission if properly enforced by the organization, the Health District may consider allowing events with 10 percent of capacity on a case-by-case basis sooner than 30 days.
?
Washoe County is leading the state in new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population and this places significant burden on our health infrastructure. The County Assessment report provided to the State Task Force shows that the large increase in new cases that has occurred since September 15 has impacted the Health District's ability to conduct disease investigations and contact tracing in a timely manner.
?
"I cannot in good conscience allow gatherings of more than 250 to take place until we have been able to assess how the newly-allowed gatherings of up to 250 people affect disease transmission rates and contact tracing efforts in Washoe County," District Health Officer Kevin Dick said. "I understand the desire to get back to normal, but we're clearly not there yet and our health infrastructure is strained. I feel it is incumbent on me to make this decision to fulfill my responsibilities to the community under State statute."
?
Pursuant to Governor's Directive 033, plans for large gatherings and events must be reviewed by the local health authority for confirmation that they comply with all applicable health and safety standards and will not place an unacceptable burden on the local health infrastructure. Further concerns for the burden that large events and gatherings may place on the health infrastructure in Washoe County include:
?

Washoe County is one of only two counties flagged for elevated disease transmission in Nevada
As of Oct.5, the COVID-19 case rate per 100,000 over the last 30 days is at 412.2 in Washoe County, highest in the state (second highest as of 10/5 was Clark County with 314.9)
Test positivity (14 day with 7-day lag) is at 8.4 percent in Washoe County (Tied with Humboldt County for highest in the State)
Current delays in contact tracing due to continual large influx of cases of near or above 100 per day
The Governor's Road to Recovery calls for increasing mitigation due to transmission levels currently occurring in Washoe County
The Truckee Meadows COVID-19 Risk Meter is at "high" and recommends gatherings be limited to fewer than 10 people
The White House COVID-19 Task Force has Washoe County in the orange ranking, which recommends that gatherings be limited to 25

For public gatherings, the current Governor's Directive allows for up to 250 people. While 250 is the legal limit, the Health District recommends that people avoid public gatherings of more than 25 people to help control disease transmission in Washoe County.
?
For private gatherings, the Governor's mandate limits those to 10 or fewer people indoors, and 25 or fewer people outdoors.

The Washoe County Health District is nationally accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board and has jurisdiction over all public health matters in Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County through the policy-making Washoe County District Board of Health. Fireworks: Illegal and extremely dangerous
in Washoe County

?

Reno, Nev. July 1, 2020. Given the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of many popular pyrotechnic displays on Independence Day, local fire and law enforcement officials are reminding residents that the use of fireworks in Washoe County are illegal, and unsafe.

The penalty for possession of fireworks can be a fine up to $1,000.00 and if convicted, up to 6 months in jail for each misdemeanor conviction. The person can also be held responsible for the cost of combating the fire.

Capable of reaching temperatures of 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, fireworks are hot enough to cause third degree burns and severe injury, and damage sight and hearing. Children are especially vulnerable to the dangers. Fireworks are also capable of igniting wildland fires in dry brush and trees.

"This summer, our region is very hot and the brush and grass is very dry," Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Chief Charles Moore said. "The use of fireworks increases the chances of a wildland fire in the area, putting residents and firefighters at risk. "As we have witnessed in recent days, Washoe County is in the midst of a severe fire season. With the upcoming 4th of July, I know many of us like to enjoy watching fireworks displays. This year, due to the current pandemic, many of the public celebrations have been canceled. I would implore all of our community members to find a safe way to celebrate the upcoming 4th of July that would not endanger the lives, property or wildlife in our beautiful community. Our deputies will take action if they witness any illegal fireworks activity. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend." said Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam.??

While it may be legal to purchase fireworks in some locations outside of Washoe County and on Tribal Lands, it is illegal to possess or use fireworks and/or pyrotechnics within the Truckee Meadows and North Lake Tahoe Fire Districts which includes the unincorporated areas of Washoe County.

COVID-19 Test Registration This Weekend
Maintenance to affect scheduling Friday at 3 p.m. through Monday at 5 a.m.

Reno/Sparks, NV - The Regional Information Center is notifying residents that the regional COVID-19 Risk Assessment Form will be down starting Friday, Aug. 28 at 3 p.m. through Monday, Aug. 31 at 5 a.m. due to scheduled maintenance with the vendor platform.

Residents who want to be tested for COVID-19 are urged to sign up by taking the risk assessment before 3 p.m. on Friday; however, residents can still sign up to get tested by calling 775-328-2427 or filling out a temporary risk assessment form throughout the weekend. The temporary risk assessment form can be found here.

The Spanish Regional COVID-19 Risk Assessment Form will not be affected by the scheduled maintenance and can be found here.

Drive-Through Flu Shots Available at
Washoe County Health District
Immunizations are available at the Health District clinic as well?

?

Reno, Nev. Sept 15, 2020 - With flu season around the corner, the Washoe County Health District is offering flu vaccinations via drive-through or with an appointment at the Health District Immunization clinic.

A yearly flu shot is recommended to those 6 months of age and older, especially those with certain medical conditions, pregnant women, and people over 65 years of age. Flu shots are free with most insurance plans (remember to bring your insurance card). Those without insurance will be vaccinated at no cost.

The drive-through flu clinics will be held at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center and are available on the following dates and times on a first come, first serve basis; no appointment is required. Please use the entrance at Wells Avenue and Sadlier Way.?

Saturday, Sept. 19, 9 a.m. to noon
Tuesday, Sept. 22, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 23, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Please note, the high-dose senior flu vaccine will not be available during these events. Seniors are recommended to seek the high-dose shot at pharmacies or healthcare providers. If you cannot make the drive-through events, you can call the Health District at 775-328-2402.

The first week of October is the official start of Flu Season according to the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), but cases of influenza are already being reported.
No vaccine is 100 percent effective, but if you get a flu shot it can reduce the severity of symptoms, and reduce the risk of hospitalization and death if you do catch the flu.

"With the significant spread of COVID-19 still in our community, a flu vaccination is one of the most important things you can do right now," said Kevin Dick, District Health Officer for Washoe County. "The risk of our hospitals reaching capacity due to the flu and COVID-19 is significant. Since flu and COVID-19 symptoms are similar, avoiding the flu can also help to preserve adequate testing capacity for COVID-19. A flu shot can prevent you from getting the flu, as well as help decrease the severity of the symptoms."

People who have the flu often feel some or all these symptoms: fever, chills, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea.

The single best way to avoid getting the flu is to get vaccinated each year, but there are other preventive measures everyone should practice to ward-off the flu and other illnesses:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Cough and sneeze into your sleeve or a tissue
Wash your hands often
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
Wear a facial covering

If you are not able to attend our drive-thru events, you can schedule an appointment to get a flu shot at the Health District Immunization clinic at 1001 E. 9th?Street, Building B, by calling 775-328-2402.

Washoe County Bar Owners Urged to Join Local COVID-19 Coalition
Regional partners are working with industry on safe reopening procedures

Reno/Sparks, NV -?The Regional Information Center is urging bar, tavern, pub, brewery and winery owners in Washoe County to join a local COVID-19 coalition that is working with local jurisdictions to come up with plans to reopen bars safely with COVID-19 mitigation measures.

The Washoe County Bar/Taproom Coalition drafted guidelines to reopen safely based off standards from other states where bars are open and Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) guidance. The Washoe County Health District reviewed the plans and made recommendations that were agreed upon. The local jurisdictions will submit these plans to the Nevada COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force for today's meeting. That task force will decide if bars can open in Washoe County.

"The regional agencies in Washoe County are working with bar owners on COVID-19 mitigation measures so they can open safely," Washoe County Manager Eric Brown said. "We need input and buy-in from all our bar, tavern, pub, brewery and winery owners to make that happen."

More than 30 local bar owners have signed an operating agreement to work together with local officials to create and implement COVID-19 safety operating procedures. Bar owners who wish to be included in the coalition discussions should contact Matt Johnson, co-founder of IMBIB, at?matt@imbibreno.com.

"Bars in Washoe County have been closed or doing to-go sales only for 24 of the last 26 weeks. This is having a huge impact on business owners, their staffs and all the families involved as many have lost more than 50% of their normal revenue," Johnson said. Given the opportunity, bar owners are more than prepared to serve those in Washoe County and do so in a manner with strict protocols and protections for customers and employees."

Seniors 75 and older are not yet eligible to receive COVID-19 Vaccine

Dec. 31, 2020. Reno/Sparks, NV -?The Regional Information Center is reminding residents that the 75-and-older population is not yet eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.
?
However, individuals who are 75 and older are now being added to the Tier 2 group of the State of Nevada's COVID-19 Vaccine Playbook, which will be updated to account for this change soon, and we're expecting to vaccinate the Tier-2 group in late January.
?
Washoe County is currently vaccinating those in the Tier-1 group, which includes front line medical workers, law enforcement and other medical personnel. Once most Tier-1 personnel in Washoe County are offered the COVID-19 vaccine, the Health District will transition to Tier 2. The State is working on an update to its COVID-19 Vaccine Playbook, which includes the addition of 75+ population to Tier 2, and it will be released soon.

Confusion on which tier the 75-and-older population fell into has led to an uptick in calls and emails to the Health District, which takes away from primary duties. There have been reports of people showing up to the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center unannounced to receive the vaccine who had to be turned away.

"We appreciate people being eager and excited to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible," said Kevin Dick, District Health Officer for Washoe County. "New information is flowing into us by the hour and we're working long hours and weekends to be able to distribute it to more than 470,000 people in Washoe County. We ask the general public for patience at this time as we work with local, state and federal partners on this enormous logistical challenge ahead of us."

How will I be notified when it's my time to be vaccinated?
We're working with Tier-1 employers to vaccinate their employees who fall into the Tier-1 category. A large portion of Tier 2 will be essential workers, and priority list of those essential workers will be developed by the State of Nevada with guidance from the federal government. Employers will be tasked with notifying employees of how to sign up for the vaccine and when it will occur. For the remainder in Tier 2, the Regional Information Center will make that updated information publicly accessible when it's finalized and work with community partners to share the news with as many people as possible in Washoe County. The notification process for individuals that are 75 and older has not yet been finalized.? Pharmacies are expected to provide vaccinations for some of the Tier 2 workers and individuals age 75 and older.

Can I signup to receive an alert when I can get a vaccine?
The Regional Information Center will distribute public information when certain population groups are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. We ask that you be patient during this process and check for updates on our website, www.COVID19Washoe.com and with local news outlets.

How will you verify that people getting the vaccine are eligible?
The COVID-19 vaccine site has Nevada National Guard members at the entrance to check for personal identification and verify employment. People who are not eligible for the vaccine will be turned away.

Health District Recommends Avoiding
New Year's Eve Gatherings?
COVID-19 spike expected, highest risk for those with underlying health conditions

?

Dec. 30, 2020. Reno/Sparks, NV -?The Washoe County Health District is recommending that residents refrain from attending or hosting any New Year's Eve or New Year's Day gatherings with people outside of your household due to risk of COVID-19 transmission and the complications it can have on vulnerable populations.
?
The Health District urges residents to maintain gatherings with members of your household and find ways to spend time with friends and family in a non-contact setting, such as through phone or virtually.
?
There have been 474 COVID-19 related deaths in Washoe County. The risk to the elderly and those with underlying health conditions like obesity and hypertension are significant.
?
The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has defined underlying health conditions that can lead to higher risk for COVID-19 implications.
?
The CDC has also recommended safer ways to celebrate New Year's Eve if you plan to gather with non-household members. Wearing a face covering, maintaining social distancing of 6 feet and frequent hand washing are the main ones. Other safe measures include:
?
If you host a celebration

Talk with guests ahead of time to set expectations for celebrating together.
Limit the number of guests (The Governor has restricted private gatherings to no more than ten people from no more than two households).
Keep celebrations outdoors, if possible.
If indoors, open windows and doors. Use a window fan to blow air out, which will pull fresh air in through the open windows.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and items between use.
Have guests bring their own food, drinks, plates, cups, and utensils.
Have extra unused masks available for your guests and encourage everyone to wear them inside and outside.
Keep background music volume low so guests don't need to shout.
It's okay if you decide to postpone or cancel your gathering. Do what's best for you.

If you attend a celebration

It's okay if you decide to stay home and remain apart from others.
If traveling for a celebration, know what to do before, during, and after travel.
Bring your own food, drinks, and disposable plates, cups, and utensils.
Wear a mask indoors and outdoors and safely store your mask while eating and drinking.
Avoid alcohol and drugs that can alter judgement and make it difficult to practice COVID-19 safety measures.
Avoid shouting and singing.
Avoid areas where food is prepared, such as the kitchen.
Use single-use options, like condiment packets.

Health District has administered
about 5,500 COVID-19 vaccines

Jan. 5, 2021. Reno/Sparks, NV -?The Washoe County Health District is providing an update on COVID-19 vaccine administration. The Health District, which is one of several organizations administrating the COVID-19 vaccine in Washoe County, is working with the State on providing county-wide vaccine numbers and that data will be released as soon as it's available.
?
As of Jan. 4, 2021, the Washoe County Health District (WCHD) is providing the following COVID-19 vaccine update:
?

Overall Washoe County has received 20,760 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, which include both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine.
- 8,370 doses were designated for the Health District to administer
- 12,390 doses were allocated to partners in Washoe County, such as acute care hospitals, emergency medical services providers like REMSA and fire departments, and other health care providers
WCHD has administered about 5,500 COVID-19 vaccines at the Point of Dispensing (POD) in the east parking lot of the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center over the period of 10 days.
- That number is approximate because each vial of COVID-19 has a certain number of doses that manually have to be taken out, and the data entry and record keeping involved is extensive. The COVID-19 Regional Response Team is identifying staff to help with data entry to make sure the accurate number of doses are reported to the state and federal governments in an orderly fashion.
WCHD has 102 doses of Pfizer and 2,200 doses of Moderna vaccines on hand stored securely.

The POD site at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center recently underwent upgrades to include four roof structures to allow staff to administer vaccine in inclement weather. There are six traffic lanes which at maximum capacity lead to 12 vaccination bays. In total, 12 nurses can vaccinate at the same time. On average, each nurse has been able to vaccinate about 17 people per hour, for a total of 204 vaccination per hour. We're constantly working to improve efficiencies.

The Health District is operating the POD four days a week with operational periods of 4-6 hours. We are planning the transition to Tier 2 (find more information on vaccine tiers in Washoe County here) but no information is available at this time. The Health District is one of several entities working to administer the vaccination, which includes area pharmacies. Due to the logistical challenges of inoculating a population of 470,000, we're working as quickly and safely as possible to vaccinate as many people as possible.
