Dear Grayson,

Thank you so much for your interest in visiting Valdez, Alaska.  Valdez is a wonderful place with spectacular beauty and a remarkable history.  As we transition from winter to spring, with glorious views of the snow-covered peaks surrounding us, we also see the effects of a global pandemic unfolding both within and beyond our small community. Its impact is felt everywhere, including with present and future operations of the Valdez Museum & Historical Archive.

All the uncertainty is troubling, but my staff and I continue planning programs and projects. On a state and national level, the Alaska Travel Industry Association and the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) are providing guidance. On a local level, we are networking with Valdez Unified Community Response Group: COVID-19. We are not panicking, and with that in mind, we are moving forward.

Due to public health concerns the Valdez Museum remains closed to the public through May 1, 2020, but museum staff are seeking ways to provide "virtual" exhibits and educational programs. Although this current situation is scary and unsettling, the Valdez Museum remains your trusted source of information for sustaining a healthy community and maintaining calm.

We have launched a new Creative Connections Initiative

Museums around the world are now closed, reminding us of how vital museums are to communities in times of need. They are places to learn, create and gather. During this period of social isolation Valdez Museum Board and Staff are finding different methods of communication so we can connect with you in new and creative ways. Artwork by local students K-12 now adorns the Museum walls, and Spring into Art 2020 has become a "virtual" exhibit that started with a Facebook live Opening Celebration! Video of the event is posted on our Facebook page, plus samples of the many colorful works of art are posted on our website www.valdezmuseum.org.

We are creating new online programs that teach, entertain and stimulate creative energy. Here are website offerings both current and planned--Virtual Education, a series of art and education programs; Tales from the Archive, a peek into the collections; What is Wednesday, artifact spotlight; and Live from the Pinzon Bar, a weekly casual interactive chat about museum news.
