News from UX Australia
No images? Click here ![]() UX Australia NewsConference and general UX news, hand-picked for you. Design Research 2020Well, that was interesting. Actually, it was more than that - it was awesome! In the space of a few days, Design Research 2020 went from a three-day physical event to a two-day virtual conference. It wasn''t possible to convert the workshops to online events, but the talks went ahead with online presenters and attendees. Huge kudos to our event management team of Steve, Janna and Annabelle for their outstanding imitations of ducks serenely floating on the pond while paddling like mad under the water. We''re pleased to say we found solutions for most of the problems we encountered, from how to handle the tech team of three (we kept them all on), what to do with all the food (we donated it to OzHarvest through the hotel) down to how to handle the Q&A with the presenters (common sense, respect and enthusiasm). We''re also deeply grateful to the people at Pan Pacific Melbourne for their unstinting support and understanding, and the same with our marvellous sponsors. And now we know we can do this. We have our fully online Design Leadership 2020 conference in May to hone what we learned and we are planning exactly how we''ll bring the much larger UX Australia 2020 conference online in August - including workshops. We''d also like to acknowledge the massive impact this terrible virus is having on all our lives and express our sincere condolences to those seriously affected. We aim to play our small part in helping to maintain as normal an order of business as we can in our industry. Transcripts of the DR2020 talks are onsite now, we will be posting audio recordings over the next week or so, and presentation slides when we can. We do have some video but it remains to be seen how well it turned out. In the meantime, we highly recommend the comprehensive and insightful summary of DR2020 put together by the stalwart Rohan Irvine, whose UX event tweets are always a highlight. Go read his LinkedIn wrap. Below are a few snaps that convey some of the flavour of how DR2020 went down. ![]() Conference headquarters setting up in Melbourne. ![]() Rohan Irvine delivering his presentation. ![]() Attendees'' setups varied: phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, even TVs. ![]() International attendees stayed home and participated from their own time zones. Photo credits: @docbaty, @rohboto, @kellyanagram, @vegemaki SponsorsWe''d particularly like to acknowledge and thank our awesome sponsors, who remained supportive, generous and enthusiastic throughout the leadup and the event itself. ![]() Design Leadership 2020And so we move on to our next conference: Design Leadership 2020 will go ahead as a fully online event from 13-14 May, comprising a half-day Leadership Summit on day one and a one-day Presentation Program on day two. Our first three DL2020 presentations are on the website now, and we''ll be progressively adding more as they are confirmed. The final schedule will be posted closer to the event. You can register now for the Summit or the Conference, or for both. Early Bird registration for the Conference gives a good discount. Find out more about Design Leadership 2020.

That''s a Wrap!In a year that has presented literally life-threatening challenges, the task of taking UX Australia 2020 fully online hardly amounts to a hill of beans. Nevertheless, it has been due to the positive attitudes and practical co-operation of our presenters, our attendees, our sponsors and our awesome organising team that the 12th UX Australia conference not only took place but was an outstanding success. Our speakers and workshop leaders adapted well to the virtual format, in particular negotiating the transition from the intimacy of being live on stage to the rather different closeness of being on attendees'' big and small screens in their homes and offices. And our attendees, too, took to the online format with zeal, using the Chat function to leave a stream of comments and Q&A to ask questions of the speakers. There was still never enough time to answer all the queries, though. It was different, too, to have our sponsors playing such an active role. Instead of being stuck at a table or booth, they were hosting side events and attendee activities, taking the opportunity to be more proactive than reactive in innovative, appropriate and engaging ways. The Miro board Exhibition Hall hung it together, and the App put it all in your hands. There''s more post-conference notes below, but let us again thank everyone who attended, presented and supported UX Australia 2020. See you next year! screenshot courtesy Melissa Voderberg ![]() RecordingsZoom recordings of the all morning conference presentations have already been sent to attendees, while slides, audio and transcripts will be published to the presentation webpages in due course as they become available. SponsorsWe know there are still things happening with contest results, activity outcomes, swag and followups, but let''s have a last grateful hurrah for our wonderful conference sponsors. Hope we see you all at our next event in 2021. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Articles

No images? Click here ![]() UX Australia NewsConference and general UX news, hand-picked for you. Post-conferenceResourcesEven as we''re all still mulling over what we absorbed at UX Australia 2020, we''ve loaded resources to the website to help you reflect on the presentations and consider their impact for you. Each presentation page on the website now has transcripts, audio recordings and - where they''ve been made available to us - the speaker''s slide deck. We''ll add any missing slide decks as we get them. Go the Presentations page, select your talk, scroll down and the resources are there for you. If you prefer, you can also go to our Souncloud page and browse all the audio recordings there, or go to our Speaker Deck page to access all the transcripts and slides. Access to full Zoom recordings of all the presentations has been made available to attendees only - we feel the people who fronted up and paid should get that little extra. Attendee SurveysAll conference attendees have been sent a survey canvassing their thoughts on how the conference went - especially in the online format - what could be improved and general reactions to the event. We have many responses already and we''ll be analysing these in coming weeks to discern trends of thought and ideas for future events. If you attended and you haven''t yet responded to the survey, never fear, you can still send your answers in when you have time. The PodcastThe good news is that Doc Baty has decided to continue to build an extra career as a podcaster. The series of interviews he conducted with UXA2020 speakers went so well, and elicited such positive responses from participants and listeners, that he''s decided to continue the UX Australia Podcast for the foreseeable future. You''ll find St6eve''s 10 pre-conference podcasts on the Soundcloud page (scroll past the presentation audio). That is the good news. There is no bad news. NextApart from all that, the UX Australia team will now - after a bit of a breather - be putting their energies into developing the program of events for 2021. The online format has probably created more opportunities than anyone expected - for example, in making the conference available to overseas attendees - and we''re determined to build on those to create an ever more engaging, relevant and accessible program for next year. Stay tuned! Articles

Sponsors![]() We''re especially pleased and grateful to have the active support of our two event sponsors for Design Leadership 2020: experience design agency blueegg and industry recruiters extraordinaire Aquent. We greatly value our sponsor partnerships and we know they are of great benefit to our attendees. Make sure you check them out. ![]() Women in UXOur four week online course Creating impactful presentations started last week with Mags Hanley. The first session focused on finding your own presenting style and working with your audience, whether that''s 500 people in a conference room or your boss. Not only have we had strong feedback about the content and how Mags conducts the sessions but it''s also proving to be a great way for attendees to socialise and meet new people during this time of isolation. Mags is also presenting at Design Leadership 2020 this week, a great opportunity to find out more about this course. It''s entirely possible we will run it again, and there may also be a third instalment in the Women in UX series. You can find out more at magshanley.com. UX Australia 2020Planning for UX Australia 2020 (25-28 August, online) continues apace, and that''s getting very exciting, too. We''re aiming to break out of the constraints of an "online conference" to create more of a "whole online experience". We have a bunch of ideas already and we''re working on more. We''re very interested in talking to any sponsors who have ideas that suit the online format. Digital swag, anyone? Virtual exhibition booths? We''re open to ideas. We have our program worked out, consisting of conference presentations on the mornings of all four days, with half-day workshops to follow on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, including four international keynote speakers to complement a strong program of presentations from local and visiting speakers. UX Australia 2020We are dead-set thrilled to announce our first keynote speaker for UX Australia 2020 (25-28 August, online) as one of the most interesting, incisive and perhaps challenging speakers on the international circuit, Tatiana Mac. Tatiana''s keynote, System of Systems, will focus on "where our design systems live in broader ecosystems, the challenges inherent, and how to lean into the good, and resist the bad". Read more about Tatiana and her keynote. Back in March, we had to cancel the two workshops planned for Design Research 2020 but we''re delighted to say Transforming findings into actionable insights with Michelle Pickrell and Ruth Ellison and You Can Prototype Anything with Alexandra Almond and Karina Smith will now form part of UXA2020. Design Leadership 2020We''ve had extremely positive feedback from attendees and speakers about Design Leadership 2020. It''s quite remarkable how speakers have adapted to presenting online, in some cases quite possibly to better effect than standing on a stage. We''ve also learned a great deal more about managing online events. Hats off to Forum Facilitators Amir Ansari and Steve Baty, the latter kicking on to play host for the following full day Conference. You can get a sense of the quality of the presentations for yourself, as our team has brought the slide decks, transcriptions and audio online in record time. Head on over to the Presentations page and click through to the individual talks. Thanks again also to our stalwart event sponsors blueegg (great work on the Miro board) and Aquent. Find out more about Design Leadership 2020. Women in UXWe''ve also had greet feedback about the four week online course Creating impactful presentations with Mags Hanley. One example is that, with the assistance of Exo Digital (see Sponsors below), we have replaced our usual physical paper-based booklet guide to the conference with a super-duper UX Australia 2020 App that digitises the schedule, speaker & presentation information, sponsor content and, importantly, post-conference access to the recorded presentations. It''s only available to registered attendees and it will be available for download from 21 August. The PodcastNeed some background and insight into our speakers? Jump on Steve Baty''s UX Australia Podcast, in which Doc chats with some of the presenters about their talks and workshops. The audio can be found online on Soundcloud, Spotify and speakers'' presentation pages. There are 10 interviews available now, more to come. The Keynotes![]() The Presenters![]() The Bottom LineIt''s 100% online. It''s less expensive. It''s restructured for an online format. It has four international keynote speakers. It has 31 other speakers and workshop leaders. It has 22 presentations in a single track over four days so you need miss nothing. It has five online, interactive workshops, focusing on relevant, challenging and actionable UX topics. It has a great lineup of sponsors and partners, as a result of which, it has a series of extra events, free and exclusively for attendees. It is and remains Australia''s premier UX Design conference, now in its 12th year. It is UX Australia 2020.

No images? Click here ![]() UX Australia NewsConference and general UX news, hand-picked for you. UX Australia 2020UX Australia 2020 takes place from 25-28 August, 100% online. So far, we''ve announced a conference program of 23 speakers delivering 17 presentations on topics of direct and ongoing relevance to Australian UX Design professionals. We''ve scheduled five half-day interactive and highly focused workshops, in a new structure to suit the online format. We''ve added two renowned and lauded international keynote speakers, Tatiana Mac and Jess Berentson Shaw. Today, we add our third keynote speaker to the schedule, from an area very close to our hearts. Shirley Chowdhary is the CEO of the GO Foundation, an organisation founded by footballers Adam Goodes and Michael O''Loughlin to support Aboriginal children through school and into university. We formed a partnership with the Foundation in 2018 that sees UX Australia funding scholarships for 10 primary school children over seven years from kindergarten to Year 6. ![]() Shirley is also Deputy Chair of YMCA NSW and was listed in 2019 as one of 100 Women of Influence by the AFR. With a background in law and finance in New York, Japan and Australia, Shirley is a strong advocate for Reconciliation, a staunch believer in the power of inclusion and a fierce advocate for diversity among corporate and not-for-profit boards and senior management. With another keynote speaker yet to announce (and maybe a surprise or two), we are dleighted to have such a powerful (and diverse!) program to offer to our UX family this year, despite - or perhaps even enhanced by - the effects of the pandemic. Look out for more announcements, but do take the time now to browse the speakers, presentations and workshops, take note of the new event structure and reduced pricing and get yourself registered before the opportunity passes you by.

Design Research 2021Keynote Speaker Confirmed! We are super excited - and more than a little pleased with ourselves - to advise that the keynote speaker for Design Research 2021 (17-19 Mar, online) will be Indi Young, one of the most thoughtful, insightful and influential people working in UX Research today. ![]() "Indi is a researcher who coaches, writes, and teaches about inclusive product strategy. Her work is rooted in the problem space where the focus is on people, not users. Indi pioneered opportunity maps, mental model diagrams, and thinking styles. "Her way of approaching the problem allows teams to truly pay attention to people, without letting cognitive bias and assumptions creep in. Indi has written two books, Practical Empathy and Mental Models. Her next book, Assumptions Aside, will cover thinking styles". Design Research 2020Our focus right now is on making Design Research 2020, starting this week in Melbourne, a successful conference for everyone involved. We have cancelled the planned workshops but conference presentations are going ahead. While DR2020 is a relatively small event at 150 attendees, it still represents a risk that some people will wish to avoid. To that end, we have put in place arrangements to allow for remote participation in the event. Both attendees and speakers can attend the conference digitally rather than in person. This also allows us to release more tickets for DR2020 for people who would like to attend the conference online. Registration for online attendance is available at Humanitix. We are looking at ways we can support a mixture of in-person and virtual attendance as we''re doing for DR2020, or to make the conference completely virtual if a more extensive lockdown is called for. In the meantime, we''re excited by what we''ve seen from the submissions to DL2020 - and thrilled that only half of the submissions are from men! Last year this ratio was 11:1 and it''s wonderful to see this shift (due in no small part, we''re sure, to Mags Hanley''s recent workshops). Women in UX WorkshopsAs this newsletter goes out, the sold-out Women in UX 2020 workshop in Melbourne will be setting up for an empowering afternoon, with Sydney following on 20 February (also sold out, there''s a waitlist). Given the clear support for this concept, we''re working on organising more workshops - stay tuned. SponsorshipWe deeply appreciate the support of our event sponsors - they help to keep attendance prices as low as we can make them, and they contribute greatly to the buzz of our events. In this newsletter, we''d like to give a shout-out to Design Research 2020 sponsor Askable, with whom we''ve built a great partnership over the last few years (and they''re also on board as a UX Australia sponsor this year, again). If you want to get some of the benefits that our sponsors get from supporting our events, get in touch with us to see what opportunities exist. It''s a great way to reach a significant group of Australian UX professionals in one go. ![]() Askable empowers you to run usability tests without the hassle of recruiting, scheduling and following up with participants - letting you focus on extracting insights. Find out more at https://www.askable.com/ or, better yet, come to DR2020 and hit them up for a chat - they''re very friendly! IxDA MentoringThe Sydney chapter of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA Sydney) is seeking participants for the next round of its mentoring program. In this round, they will be running one-on-one mentoring only (group mentoring will run again later in the year). The sessions start at the beginning of March and continue until the end of May. This year IxDA Sydney is trying something new: an optional "matching workshop" where mentors and mentees can meet a few of their possible matches, based on their profiles and goals. If you''d like to apply to be a mentee (ie being mentored), please fill in the mentee survey by 21 February 2020. If you''d like to apply to be a mentor, please fill in the mentor survey by 21 February 2020. UX Design Awards 2020The UX Design Awards reflect the huge impact of user experience design on shaping a positive living environment for all. Originating in 2008 as a show for good usability, The International Design Center Berlin (IDZ) established the Awards in 2015. Ever since, the UX Design Awards have been honouring great user experiences in a class of their own. This year, there are two new award sections: “New Talent” for young designers and “Visions” for projects with a development horizon of ten years. The other two categories are “Product" for products, services and environments, and “Concept", for prototypes and concepts. Submissions are invited until 15 April (fees apply). Winners will be announced in August and awards presented at a ceremony in Berlin in September. Find out more. Articles

Wrapping Up 2020There''s no doubt that this year presented Australians with multiple challenges: some we shared with the rest of the world, some unique to our amazing land, all unprecedented in the extraordinary pressure they placed on our personal and professional lives. In one sense, it''s hard not to see UX conferences and workshops as trivial in the face of such a global disaster. In another, they are the very means by which we can keep proper perspective, collaborate meaningfully with our peers, and gain new and useful insights into the role of Design in the modern world. Your continued support for our activities and events in 2020 tells us we do have a role to play. We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims of COVID-19 and its many and diverse flow-on effects. We express our sincere gratitude to the many people who fought on the front lines against the pandemic, and the many more who helped mitigate its effects by doing the right thing for themselves and their communities. And we state our determination to come out of 2020 more committed than ever to using Design as a force to improve the world and the lives of all its inhabitants. Come and join us in 2021.
