HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARINES! Happy Birthday, Marines! On the 245th birthday of the Marine Corps, we wish every Marine a hearty Happy Birthday! It is tradition in the Corps to mark the birthday with a Birthday Cake-Cutting Ceremony. With the pandemic keeping us apart this year, the Museum is celebrating with a VIRTUAL ceremony. Please click on the video above to view! This year our oldest Marine present is Museum docent, George Schaudel, who fought at the Chosin Reservoir. Schaudel enlisted in the Marine Corps on 4 February 1948. Our youngest Marine present is LCpl Hunter Terrell. Terrell enlisted on 2 February 2019 and is currently serving with Education Command. While it''s a coincidence that these two Marines joined the Corps almost exactly 71 years apart, the brotherhood and traditions they share are not. That is a bond forged through determination, dedication and duty. Veterans Day - 11 November 2020 On 11 November, Veterans Day and every day, we thank all of the men and women who have answered the call to serve our Nation. Their faithful and selfless service is why America remains the land of the free and the home of the brave. Thank you and Semper Fidelis! The Museum will be open and welcoming veterans, their family members and friends to the museum on 11 November (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.). Won't you join us too? All are welcome at the Museum and admission is always free. Native American Heritage Month During this month we take the opportunity to honor all Native Americans, representing 574 federally recognized tribes, and acknowledge their ongoing contributions to the success and growth of our Nation. We invite visitors to stop by our WWII Gallery to see our newly updated Navajo Code Talker exhibit. This new addition includes interviews with Navajo Code Talkers, an explanation of the spoken code as well as the importance and deployment of the code. Within this exhibit are artifacts including a radio and headset used by Code Talkers, and one of the Congressional Gold Medals awarded to the Code Talkers. Learn more... THE MUSEUM IS OPEN! MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear NMMC friends, These are unusual times and, just like Marines, we are improvising, adapting, and overcoming. A month ago, we made the difficult decision to temporarily close the Museum to the public. While most of our staff has been working remotely, a small group has been at the Museum and our other facilities doing restoration, cataloging, and other collections work. The Exhibits staff used the time to clean cases and adjust the lighting in the galleries. When you visit our Blog , Facebook , Twitter, Instagram , and Youtube pages, you see how busy we have been doing research, writing, photographing, and posting stories. We have expanded the educational resources on our website with videos and online activities. Our amazing Distance Learning team put together a live stream WWI program for students in Texas, and has since received 14 new program requests from around the country! Fulfilling all these requests and keeping all of you well informed is what keeps us motivated. Please keep the requests coming, and the Museum team will do our best to give you the content you are craving. Adjusting to our new "normal" has been a challenge, but we are so grateful to you for your ongoing support and responses to the content that we deliver. Still, we miss the "oohs and ahs" in our galleries, the smiling faces, and shared stories. We look forward to opening our doors and welcoming you back soon. Stay healthy and safe. THE MUSEUM IS OPEN!

We have taken enhanced health and safety measures for our visitors, volunteers, and staff.? Visitors must follow all posted instructions while visiting the Museum.

An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present.? COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death.? By visiting the National Museum of the Marine Corps, you voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19.

If you have a fever or COVID-19 symptoms, please visit another day.
All individuals over age 6 must wear a face covering while in the Museum. It is highly recommended that children ages 2-6 wear a mask.
Keep a distance of at least 6 feet from others.
Don''t touch the artifacts or exhibits.
Wash or sanitize your hands often.
Cleaning procedures are enhanced in the Museum with extra attention given to high-touch areas.
You may bring one clear, sealed water bottle no larger than 20 oz. Food is not allowed in the Museum.
Follow instructions from staff and docents. They are focused on keeping everyone safe.
Semper Fidelis Memorial Park and the Children''s Playground are open.
Tun Tavern and the Museum Store are open.
The Museum is open from 9 am - 5 pm daily (except Christmas Day). Admission is FREE.

UPDATE FROM THE MUSEUM Closure Update On Monday, 23 November, the National Museum of the Marine Corps temporarily closed due to recent increases in COVID-19 cases, both regionally and nationally. The health and safety of visitors, staff and volunteers is the Museum's first priority at this time. The Museum grounds, to include Semper Fidelis Memorial Park and the playground, will remain open. Watch for special posts highlighting the Museum's holiday decorations honoring Korean War veterans on the 70th anniversary of the war (more information below). Please stay safe! Virtual Tree Lighting Ceremony Honoring Korean War Veterans For more than a year the National Museum of the Marine Corps has planned to honor Korean War veterans through our 2020 holiday decorations. Nothing, to include a pandemic, will keep us from remembering the veterans of what is often called "The Forgotten War." On 1 December at 5 p.m. the Museum is hosting a virtual ceremony to light the tree in honor of those valiant men. Join us on our Facebook for the virtual Tree Lighting Ceremony! This year, our tree is adorned with portraits of Korean War veterans and topped with the Star of Koto-ri. Replicas of Korean War-era Tootsie Rolls hang from the bottom of scarlet banners around Leatherneck Gallery. To learn why Tootsie Rolls are important to some Korean War veterans and the history of the war, take an online tour of our Korean War Gallery. Toys For Tots The National Museum of the Marine Corps is still accepting Toys for Tots drop offs, even while closed to the public. Drop boxes are located at the Museum''s front entrance, just inside the door. For larger drop offs, please ask security to notify a Museum employee who will escort you to the main drop point inside the Museum. For more than a year the National Museum of the Marine Corps has planned to honor Korean War veterans through our 2020 holiday decorations.?Nothing, to include a pandemic, will keep us from remembering the veterans of what is often called "The Forgotten War."? On 1 December at 5 p.m. the Museum is hosting a virtual ceremony to light the tree in honor of those valiant?men. Join us on our Facebook for the?virtual Tree Lighting Ceremony!

This year, our tree is adorned with portraits?of Korean War veterans and topped with the Star of Koto-ri.?Replicas of Korean War-era Tootsie Rolls hang from the bottom of scarlet banners around Leatherneck Gallery.? Toys For Tots

The National Museum of the Marine Corps is still accepting Toys for Tots drop offs, even while closed to the public. Drop boxes are located at the Museum''s front entrance, just inside the door.? For larger drop offs, please ask security to notify a Museum employee who will escort you to the main drop point inside the Museum.? OPENING SEPTEMBER 8, 2020 The National Museum of the Marine Corps will reopen to the public on 8 September, after closing temporarily in March due to COVID-19. With enhanced health and safety protocols in place, the Museum is excited to welcome visitors back after Labor Day. NMMC Director and Deputy Director Message We have taken enhanced health and safety measures for our visitors, volunteers, and staff. Visitors must follow all posted instructions while visiting the Museum. An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death. By visiting the National Museum of the Marine Corps, you voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19. If you have a fever or COVID-19 symptoms, please visit another day. All individuals over age 6 must wear a face covering while in the Museum. Keep a distance of at least 6 feet from others. Don''t touch the artifacts or exhibits. Wash or sanitize your hands often. Cleaning procedures are enhanced in the Museum with extra attention given to high-touch areas. You may bring one clear, sealed water bottle no larger than 20 oz. Food is not allowed in the Museum. #MUSEUMFROMHOME 70th Anniversary of the Korean War Shortly before dawn on 25 June 1950, eight divisions of the North Korean People's Army crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded the Republic of Korea. Within three days, the South Korean capital city of Seoul had been captured and soon after, President Harry S. Truman authorized sending U.S. forces to Korea. During the three years of war that followed, the Marines, fighting alongside the U.S. Army and U.N. forces, would prove themselves as a formidable force at Pusan, Inchon, Seoul and the Chosin Reservoir. Major General Frank E. Lowe, U.S. Army described the tenacity of the Marines in an article, "The safest place in Korea was right behind a platoon of Marines. Lord, how they could fight."
