Allison Jolly and Lynne Jewell Shore became the first women to win an Olympic gold medal in sailing at the 1988 Olympic Games in South Korea. The sailing competition of the ''88 Games was the first time that a separate event was created exclusively for women athletes. The inaugural women's 470 Olympic competition featured teams from 21 nations. This historic performance earned them the Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year honors. 

Gary Jobson chats with Allison and Lynne on The Starboard Portal to reflect on this breakthrough accomplishment and discuss how they are engaging with the sport of sailing today.

One Design Central: A new online resource for one design classes and sailors. If you have members that are sailing one design boats, dinghies or keelboats, foiling or not, youth and/or adults, this is the go-to place for resources, where to sail locators, tips and tricks, and so much more.

The One Design Line: A new e-newsletter for the one design sailor. The inaugural issue can be found archived on the One Design Central page, along with the ability to quickly sign up for future issues.

Introducing One Design Central with Betsy Alison: A recorded Starboard Portal session on how best to use the new One Design Central pages - along with upcoming, soon to be released features.

The fall seasons is just around the corner and with limited activities for students and travel restrictions for regattas, consider getting a certification with your teammates and getting ahead for 2021. This is a great way to build your resume and instructor skills while getting on the water in the fall. 

The Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Course is now divided into two sections, an online, 10-day, guided section and an in-person, two-day evaluation. In order to obtain certification, Instructor Candidates must successfully complete both portions of the new course format. You are required to complete the online portion before you can participate in the in-person evaluation. Get your fall staff and sailors certified today by visiting the course details and locations on our website.

Host a Level 1 Course: US Sailing is seeking course hosts for the two-day, in-person evaluation of the Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Course. There are new guidelines this year, if your organization is interested or able to host, please reach out to us at youth@ussailing.org today!

Want to help produce rock star starters in your program? Introduce your sailors to Youth Racing Central! This week's newly released content will help your youth sailors learn how to manage their space on the line. Watch the ultimate coaching video from one of the best starters in the game, pro sailor, Steve Hunt. 
 
Steve's full series of advanced starting videos is one of many features on Youth Racing Central. The content produced is meant to build up sailors'' strategies and help guide them to become better sailors on the water!

When planning for fall, consider adding a new program offering this year. The Reach program is a great way to get more students on the water during the school day and through afterschool programming. With weekday schedules looking a little different, this could be a perfect fit for your community. 

The Online Reach STEM Educator Course trains program directors, instructors, and teachers in best practices for teaching hands-on lessons and familiarizes them with the curriculum. Learn online with self-paced assignments, engaging videos, discussion boards, and instructor-led webinars and presentations. Modules include on the water and classroom-based activities for easy implementation in multiples settings.

The next Online Reach Educator Course starts August 14 and includes a FREE copy of the Reach Educator Guide Modules 11-17 in addition to Modules 1-10 already include in the course.

US Sailing has launched a new webpage to help you get resources and information directly into the hands of your organization''s members. We''ve developed a new, easy-to-use system to help your members access some of our best content through your program''s newsletters, social media or website.

From information on Safety at Sea to a sample of Dave Perry''s Racing Rules Quizzes to US Sailing Team news and more, there''s lots of great content to help your members strengthen their skills and test their knowledge.

There are many factors for community sailing centers and yacht clubs to consider before starting an adaptive sailing program or re-starting existing adaptive programming in a COVID-19 environment. A group of experienced adaptive sailing programmers will discuss these considerations LIVE on The Starboard Portal on Tuesday, June 23 at 2pm EDT / 11am PDT.
 
The panel will share their plans for restarting programs for persons with disabilities in the current pandemic and there will be time for questions from the participating audience. They will address the challenges organizations face and how they are assessing, modifying, and mitigating sailing programs by changing procedures, policies, and approaches to sailing.

This week we are pleased to share the story of another city kid, Quemuel Arroyo, who was introduced to sailing in high school, but he only truly learned sailing skills when a change of personal circumstances directed him take on a number of new challenges.

Safety Resources for Sailing Organizations by the Burgee Program

The Burgee Insurance Program by Gowrie Group, which insures more than 1,100 sailing clubs and community sailing programs nationwide, offers a complete suite of safety materials and resources.  These resources include a COVID-19 Burgee Program Risk Management Guide, Emergency Action Plan Template, Junior Sailing Safety Guide, Club Safety Manual, Dock Safety Tips, Drone Safety Resources, and a Hurricane Response Plan Template. 

To request an editable copy of any of these resources, or to learn how The Burgee Insurance Program can help better protect your sailing organization or community program, reach out to the Burgee Program team at burgee@gowrie.com (please include your name, club/program name, city, and state). The Burgee Program is endorsed by US Sailing.

Do you need to get your sailing program staff Level 1 certified for the summer? US Sailing has released a new hybrid Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Course! The course is divided into an online, 10-day guided section and an in-person, two-day evaluation to help you get your staff trained efficiently and get them out on the water quickly.

This exciting new format includes engaging videos, discussion boards, and instructor-led webinars and presentations. Once you complete the online component, you are able to register for the in-person courses posted on the website. Get your staff certified today by visiting our website.

In addition, US Sailing is seeking course hosts for the two-day, in-person evaluation. If your organization is interested in hosting, please reach out to youth@ussailing.org today!

US Sailing has made the SafeSport training course free for all of our individual members. In addition, your organizational membership level provides a set number of complimentary training registrations for your staff, volunteers, and/or flag officers who do not possess a US Sailing membership.

If you have one or more small club-owned keelboats at your facility and a US Sailing certified Keelboat instructor, your organization is eligible to become a US Sailing Accredited School.

Many clubs are surprised to learn that they can offer student level certifications to new members, friends and family by becoming an accredited US Sailing school. Your school can be private (for your members only), open to the public, or a combination of the two. The revenue gained through these offerings can support your youth programs, or help offset maintenance costs of equipment - whatever you so choose. It is also the perfect way for families to learn together while social distancing.

All you need is a Basic Keelboat Instructor, a tiller-operated keelboat under 26 feet, and a desire to get people sailing.

Equip your staff with a fun, effective, hands-on tool to use throughout the season. The Reach STEM Educator course is a professional development / training opportunity for program directors, sailing instructors and teachers.

Learn online how to implement US Sailing''s STEM program and curriculum with self-paced assignments, engaging videos, discussion boards, and instructor-led webinars and presentations.

Whether you are a sailor, race official, parent, mark set boat operator, safety boat or just interested in going out with family for a swim in a nearby cove, powerboats serve as a vital part of our sailing community.

Every club or organization should have the ability to offer Safe Powerboat Handling courses to its members and community. What does it take to get started? You need a US Sailing Certified Safe Powerboat Handling Instructor and some small powerboats. Just about anything under 26 feet will work. 

Every sailing organization looks for people to operate club boats during races and events, as well as youth sailing programs. Many people have state boating cards but not the "hands-on" experience that will allow them to operate your boats with confidence. The Safe Powerboat Handling course offered by US Powerboating will get those individuals the hands-on training they need to help them become confident powerboat operators and create a competent and safe pool of volunteers to support your sailing activities. 

The funds brought in through these courses can help offset budget expenses or help replace those aging engines!
