Below is a sample of the emails you can expect to receive when signed up to unica-web.

Dear Mr. Carter

Thank you for asking to join the UNICA mailing list. You did not specify which of our three languages you prefer. I have guessed English, but we can also send information in French or German.

This is the most recent mailing, which was published in mid January.

You can always stop these messages, or tell us of any address change, by sending a message to info@unica-web.one (Note that our official website is now www.unica-web.one)

Best wishes

Dave Watterson

8th - 15th August
Booking is now open
PRICE DROP !
The Brits said Congress Cards would cost £220 (currently over 260€) …
we asked them to think again.

No one expects to match the sheer pizzazz of Zeist in 2019. But we look forward to a fun and friendly UNICA Congress in an attractive location, with good film viewing, interesting excursions and plenty of nearby hotels.

Bless their socks, the British organisers agonised and made changes.

The opening dinner is not now a “gala dinner” but a modest meal with plenty of chances to meet and greet old friends and to make new ones. The closing reception is an informal chance to exchange farewells. It will have wine, soft drinks and a finger buffet rather than a full meal.

The reduced "early bird" price is £175
(currently about 204€)

A great value UNICA
in a great British city
The Congress is in Brindleyplace, the art and cultural heart of Birmingham, Britain’s second largest city. There is plenty to see and explore in the breaks including concert halls, galleries and theatres.

There are scores of nearby eating options to suit all budgets (including supermarkets for those who prefer DIY meals.)

On one side of Brindleyplace is the ICC (International Conference Centre) with cafes and concert hall. It is a landmark destination. Close by is the exotic looking library with a secret garden that offers superb views of the city.
The Library of Birmingham

It was opened in 2013 by Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl who survived a Taliban assassination attempt, and who now lives in Birmingham. She said:
"Let us not forget that even one book, one pen, one teacher can change the world."

BREXIT
Don't worry about it. Until negotiations are completed at the end of 2020 free movement of people between EU and Britain should continue.

Nor do we expect changes in the visa arrangements for people from countries outside the EU. If in doubt check:

 https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration/tourist-short-stay-visas

That is the official page. There are also many visa agencies, which will help arrange a visa for a fee.

COST £175

There is no charge just to watch the films.
You can buy a Congress Card (ticket) for all the events of the week or pick just some elements.

HOTELS
We cannot beat the deals offered by internet booking agencies and many of these do specially good deals if you book flights at the same time. For example:

But always check each hotel's own website to see if they offer a better deal. Check whether breakfast is included in the price or not.

FULL DAY EXCURSION - Monday
BLACK COUNTRY LIVING MUSEUM
Visit the Black Country Living Museum for a taste of life in working-class England over 100 years ago. Whole streets are re-created. Visit typical homes and factories. Enjoy the trolley buses and trams. A stroll through the area has plenty to capture the imagination ... and to catch on camera.

Lunch - is your choice. A voucher lets you choose typical British meals: fish-and-chips served in paper, a pork pie in the pub, or a range of meals at the Workers' Institute Café.  In the entrance building, the Crown Tubeworks Café offers hot and cold snacks, sandwiches, cakes, pastries and ice cream. If you are not on a diet, try Veal's Bakery for local cakes.
LICHFIELD
In the late afternoon we go on to the cathedral city of Lichfield, where you can stroll round the charming streets and visit the cathedral. It was founded in 700, and is the only medieval cathedral in Britain with three spires.
The charming town is well worth looking round and has plenty of cafés for coffee and cake. Then on the way back to our Birmingham base, we stop for a traditional British hog-roast. (Yes, of course, there will be vegetarian and vegan options too.)

HALF DAY EXCURSION - Wednesday
Birmingham is at the centre of Britain's canal network. It may not have more canals than Venice ... but it does have many more miles of canal than Venice.

Our excursion begins with a walk beside the canals to the Jewellery Quarter with its artisan shops and workshops. We return to Brindleyplace, where those who prefer not to walk too far can then join us for a boat trip along some of those city canals, during which lunch will be served.

TRAVEL

By air:
Aim for Birmingham International Airport. Take the shuttle tram to the airport station and then a train to Birmingham New Street station - the city's main central station. If you take a taxi from the airport to your hotel expect to pay £35 to £40.
By rail:
Aim for Birmingham New Street station, which is a major rail hub in Britain.
By bus:
Aim for Birmingham Coach Station, which is also a hub for British services.
By car:
Don't.
Parking is very expensive, city traffic can be horrendous and in Britain we drive on the left. If you need to come by car try to book a hotel which offers a parking deal and aim to avoid the morning and evening rush hours (07:00-10:00 and 16:00-19:00)
You can reach the island via the Eurotunnel service: https://www.eurotunnel.com or by ferry: https://www.ferrysavers.co.uk
Do read driving advice at Driving_in_the_United_Kingdom

From City Centre to the Crescent Theatre or your hotel

As I write the West Midlands Metro tram service, whose hub is next to New Street Station, has opened passenger services to the ICC (International Conference Centre) and the Library. By August it should reach a stop outside the Crescent Theatre. The adult fare in the city is £1.50 - you can pay on board with contactless credit or bank card, Swift pay or cash - but not £20 or £50 notes.

Taxis in the city are reasonably priced - see www.taxi-calculator.com for approximate fares.
Uber is also available (+44 871-222-0072) - use your phone app.
By the way, our base for UNICA is Brindleyplace, a totally renovated area named after one of the great canal pioneers. (The Crescent Theatre backs onto the square.) The area is packed with restaurants of all kinds. Gourmets who are prepared to go a little further will find six Michelin starred restaurants in and near the city.

In the coming months there will be lots more news about the event.
