Backed by the UK Space Agency, researchers at Imperial College London and the Natural History Museum will help the NASA Perseverance rover select Martian rock and soil samples to be brought back from the red planet as it searches for evidence of ancient microbial life. Read more here.

Astronomy Inspired Art Competition

The competition is open to everyone; there are 4 age categories and you can submit as many entries as you like. Your art work can take on any form but should be inspired by our University of Southampton research into the ‘Life Cycle of Stars’, Supernova and Dark Energy. Submit your work online using the hashtag #SotonAstroArt or email it to us. Don’t forget to include your age and location.

Upcoming Events

Satellite Design Competition
On Saturday 8th August, the final 3 remaining teams from the Univesity of Glasgow, Cranfield University and the Open University will be presenting their work. The students and spent the past year designing a nanosatellite payload system for an analogue lunar mission and their work will be reviewed by members of industry (SSPI and Open Cosmos).

The event will be livestreamed from 4pm. Join us to celebrate the teams' work, and to learn more about CubeSats and the challenges associated with lunar missions, with the opportunity to ask questions directly to the teams!

Olympus Rover Trials

On Saturday 15th August teams will be presenting their work for the competition. The Olympus Rover Trials challenges student teams across the UK to design, construct, and operate a rover for an analogue sample return mission to Mars.The competition is run in partnership with GMV, Thales Alenia Space, and RAL space, with Fairspace, Open Cosmos and Oxford Space Systems as sponsors and supporters.

The event will be recorded and posted on the UKSEDS Youtube Channel shortly afterwards.

All-Female Crew Set For Mission to Mars Research Station in the US

The first all-female crew is headed to the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah next year! Including current Cranfield PhD student Marta Ferran Marques and alumna Cristina V. Reynel, the crew of engineers, geologists and scientists aims to fill the data gap on women’s performance in space exploration. Read more here.

Perseverance Rover- Mars

NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission cleared its Flight Readiness Review Wednesday, an important milestone on its way to the launch pad. The daily launch window was on Thursday, July 30, at 12:50 p.m. BST.
UKSEDS organised a watch party on its discord server for all members, to watch the event live.

A Star Has Been Sent Hurtling Across the Galaxy

A star has been sent hurtling across the galaxy after undergoing a partial supernova, astronomers say. Astronomers think the object, known as a white dwarf, was originally circling another star, which would have been sent flying in the opposite direction.The object, known as SDSS J1240+6710, was previously found to have an unusual atmospheric composition. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-53415294

The UK Space Agency received the GEO (Group on Earth Observations) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Award for commitment to finding innovative satellite solutions to global challenges.

Ariel Exoplanet Mission

The Ariel space telescope, which will study the atmospheres of distant worlds, has the green light to proceed. European Space Agency member states have signed off on two years of feasibility studies. The near-billion-euro observatory is now clear to launch in 2029.

Rotherham Scientists Commissioned To Mine Oxygen From Moon Rocks

Inmarsat's Contract With ESA

National Rocketry Competition Winners

We are exited to announce the winners of this year’s National Rocketry Championships:

In first place is Cranfield Space Agency from Cranfield University.

Second place goes to Space:Exe from University of Exeter

Third place goes to Loughborough Space Society from Loughborough University.

A big congratulation to these teams and to everyone else who entered the competition.

Olympus Rover Trials

This year the ORT competition was held online following new mission requirements and saw teams from Southampton, Bath and KCL compete and a further two teams present the progress they had made.
We are happy to share the results with you here :

The CDR prize was jointly awarded to teams Southampton and Bath
The Mission Design prize was awarded to Southampton
The prize for Best Presentation went to Southampton
The overall winner of ORT 2020 was Southampton

The judges also decided to award a Best Prototype Demonstration prize to team CranSEDS, who despite the situation still managed to build their rover!

Satellite Design Competition

SELENE from Cranfield University who won Best Presentation

Applications Processes in the Space Sector

This survey aims to find out how companies can improve application processes for internships and early career roles within the UK space sector.
please fill in the survey here so that we can use the data to advocate any largely recurring suggestions to UK space companies.

Amateur Astronomy Survey

Three astronomers (Dr Claudia Antolini @CA_AstroComm, Osnat Katz @astrosnat, Helen Usher @tyseren), who are passionate about promoting inclusion in the young astronomers community, have created this survey. Please take the time to fill it out as it is aiming to gauge how people from different demographics feel in amateur astronomy spaces in the UK.

The UK Space Agency has announced £3.4 million of new funding for 10 leading-edge projects that back UK academics using space to tackle global development problems. Black Lives Matter

As an organisation which prides itself in its diverse membership, we want to make sure all of our members feel supported and that no one suffers from injustice. Therefore, we believe it is important to speak out about recent events and raise awareness for the Black Lives Matter Movement. There is work to be done and we encourage everyone to educate themselves on the matter. We must use our education to fuel change. The Fly Your Thesis! (FYT) programme is an opportunity for students to propose, design, build, test and fly their experiment on board a parabolic flight. And any UK team who is selected can apply to the UK Space Agency for further funding!

Launch of NASA SpaceX mission

Last week saw the return of human spaceflight to the US, this time with the launch of commercial spacecraft. Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken arrived at the International Space Station aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon.

Launch of new UK-based space team 'Athena'

Serco, Inmarsat, CGI UK and Lockheed Martin UK have announced that they will team up to combine their complementary skills and expertise to further enhance the country’s space industry capabilities to deliver prosperity and security.

Salad could one day be grown on Mars

As part of Tim Peake's Principia Mission, 2kgs of rocket seeds spent 6 months onboard the international space station. Once back on Earth, school children took part in an experiment to grow the seeds, finding that although they grew more slowly, are still viable!

Asteroid that doomed the dinosaurs struck Earth at ‘deadliest possible’ angle

New models from Imperial College London have produced fully 3D simulations that show the asteroid event which doomed the dinosaurs.

Major rocket test takes place in the UK for 50 years

Scottish startup Skyora has performed a static fire test of a rocket - the first in the UK for 50 years. A major milestone as the Edinburgh-based company aims to reach space in 2021!

NSSC 2020

The National Student Space Conference is upon us! The University of Birmingham is set to host a selection of space-related talks and industry insights, along with networking opportunities and the UKSEDS AGM this weekend; March 7th and 8th.

An Emerging Space Power

The Royal Aeronautical Society will host a conference "UK in the 2020s - An Emerging Space Power" from November 11th-12th. Early bird tickets are available until 12th June. Find out more information and get tickets here.

Bringing Space Down to Earth

The Royal Society of Edinburgh is teaming up with the Royal Academy of Engineering, hosting a talk where a panel of experts will discuss the broad range of ways in which space technology is used and how Scotland is helping lead the way in developing it. Take a look here for more information.

Katherine Johnson

NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson passed away on February 24th at the age of 101. In a statement, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said, "Ms Johnson helped our nation enlarge the frontiers of space even as she made huge strides that also opened doors for women and people of colour in the universal human quest to explore space."

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Gets a New Biography

Fame unfortunately eluded Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin. Payne was the first person to be awarded a PhD in astronomy at Radcliffe College and her thesis on stellar atmospheres, relating the line patterns in the observed spectra of stars to their physical conditions, is a cornerstone of modern astronomy. Virgin Galactic Sees Boost in Space Travel

Virgin Galactic completed its first sub-orbital flight in 2018 and has received 8,000 registrations of interest for future commercial flights since. This number has doubled from the number of registrations in September 2019. 600 tickets having been sold for the inaugural commercial flights later this year. Clearly, the demand for commercial space travel is there to justify its existence for some time to come.

Marsquake Detections

NASA's InSight lander has recorded more than 400 'Marsquakes' in it's first year of the mission. The lander features three sensors developed by Imperial College London, Oxford University, University of Bristol and STFC RAL Space, with £4 million funding from the UK Space Agency. Virgin Orbit Chooses Japan Launch Site

On April 2nd, Virgin Orbit announced that it has identified Oita Airport on the island of Kyushu, Japan as a site for its launch operations. It joins the United States and United Kingdom as hosts for the company, which hopes to begin operations out of its new site as early as 2022. Find out more here.

ESA Missions Get Back To Business

After scaling down scientific mission operations in late March due to the ongoing pandemic, ESA’s planetary missions are returning to gathering scientific data from its equipment across the Solar System. You can find a full discussion of the events here.

OneWeb Collapse Blamed On Coronavirus

London-based startup OneWeb has filed for bankruptcy protection in the US, citing the ongoing pandemic for its inability to secure new investment. The start-up has been building a network to deliver broadband across the world; with this decision coming very quickly after announcing the expansion of their mega-constellation to 74 satellites.
