![]() Long Read: Universities and Brexit: past, present and future by Nick HillmanLeaving the EU is going to be bad for British universities. This is the thrust of a new and in depth examination of the state of the UK university system by Nick Hillman, Director of the Higher Education Policy Institute and one of Britain''s leading analysts of the sector.
Read it here
![]() In a substantial essay for the UK in a Changing Europe, edited by former FT Whitehall editor James Blitz, Hillman argues there are three broad ways in which UK universities will suffer from Brexit. First, they will lose out by lacking full participation in EU research initiatives. Secondly, the UK will not be part of the Erasmus student exchange system, which helps foster pan-European cultural links. And third, all the best economic modelling suggests incoming EU students will more than halve - making our campuses less diverse and less enriching. Hillman''s argument is nuanced. The UK could, he concedes, make up for some of the damage from Brexit by recruiting more academics and researchers from Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. He also argues that many of the biggest challenges for UK universities in the years ahead are not about Brexit but will have more to do with the way higher education institutions decide to structure themselves. Will British universities go all out to build up their international prestige, including places in the global university ranking? Or will they focus more on building national and local links within the UK, a move that would help to build a more cohesive society? Whatever they decide, Hillman''s powerful essay argues that Brexit opens up a new era for all UK universities, an era in which things will no longer be the same.
