We wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that our most recent funding call, VocTech Now, is on course to directly support more than 25,000 learners, through the grant offers which were announced at the end of last week.

The call attracted hundreds of applications and highlighted the need for more work to support the sector in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.  As a result, Ufi decided to increase the number of grants it offered in response to the huge challenge facing vocational trainers and learners in 2020.

Can we help? Grants of up to £25K available for teachers and trainers of vocational learning.

With COVID -19 rapidly transforming the way millions of people across the UK work and learn, Ufi VocTech Trust has announced a new funding call for 2020.

VocTech Now has been prompted by the unprecedented situation vocational trainers and their learners face in 2020.

With grants available of up to £25K for projects that will last no longer than three months, Ufi wants to hear from vocational learning providers who need to use technology to deliver fast results for its learners online and need support to get their idea up and running.

Aware of the need to quickly offer support to businesses, VocTech Now will open for applications on March 30th and close on April 6th. The application process has been simplified to aid efficient processing and decisions on funding will be made by the middle of April.

Rebecca explained that in light of the situation in the UK, previously planned calls for this year, namely VocTech Impact, will be postponed until next year.

We want to support the vocational training and learning community through this these difficult times and we hope that VocTech Now offers organisations a practical solution to their immediate challenges.

The first of these will take place on Thursday, March 26th at 10.30 am, and will be repeated on Tuesday 31st March at 3pm. Titled ‘How to move training online - a trainer’s quick start guide, the sessions is designed to be a highly practical look at what you can do to get started with online training as quickly as possible.

We look at what you need to consider and how you can get started for zero cost. There will also be an opportunity for Q&A.

The webinar will be one hour long and will be led by Mark Berthelemy, a leading in figure in the world of digital learning.

Blended Learning Essentials: more resource for supporting digital learning

Blended Learning Essentials, on FutureLearn, is a free online course supported by Ufi, designed to encourage and support teachers and trainers who want to make better use of blended learning as part of their teaching practice. The course of CPD certified and is aimed at everyone working in further education, skills training, vocational education, workplace learning, and lifelong learning.

Covid-19 has forced organisations to adapt their training and adopt digital methods at speed. After the initial rush to put lectures on Zoom, organisations are now making longer term plans to alter how training is delivered in a post-Covid 19 world. Digital innovations funded by Ufi are adapting too.

Virtual Reality Simulation Systems (VRSS) have been developing an innovative VR learning tool for police forces across the UK – Computer Operated Police Simulator (COPS). 

COPS, supported through the VocTech Seed 2019 funding call, was originally designed for a classroom environment and made use of in-hand tools like VR headsets. But in the current pandemic, using face to face training and shared headsets is no longer an option. The COPS project is now exploring how to develop new content that is completely web-based and does not reply on VR headsets – users will only need a network connected computer. By redesigning the content in a way that makes it more accessible, Covid-19 related training can be delivered nationwide at speed.

National Numeracy’s aim is to help everybody improve their numeracy skills and understand the importance of numbers in everyday life.

This year’s National Numeracy Day is a fully virtual festival with activities and keynotes throughout the day with topics and sessions to improve confidence and skills.

Aimed at all ages, the agenda includes stories from the Numeracy Day Heroes and also welcomes guest speakers such as Rachel Riley, Martin Lewis, and Bobby Seagull.

The first three articles on the differences between online training and face to face, things to consider and common pitfalls to avoid, can already be found on our website and the other two will be arriving later this week.

Over the coming weeks you will see our blog fill up with articles that support the main sessions and we’ll let you know about them via our social media channels – we’re most active on Twitter and LinkedIn, but wherever you choose to see us it’s always @UfiTrust

Last week, Association of Colleges (AoC) introduced their September Promise initiative which highlights the impact that Covid-19 is having and could continue to have for this year’s school and college leavers.

AoC’s Chief Executive, David Hughes, has called upon Gavin Williamson, Secretary of State for Education, to deliver a new ‘September Promise’ which would guarantee access to high-quality education or training this Autumn to every young adult who wants one.

AoC Estimates that there are:

• 30,000 16 & 17 year olds in England who would usually expect to start an apprenticeship or work-based learning programme in the coming academic year who now need alternative provision.
• 70,000 18 & 19 year olds in England who would usual be headed to employer-based training who will now need alternative provision.

The aim is simple, to ensure that Covid-19 does not set young people back but that they are supported to become the generation that builds the UK’s future.

With VocTech Now closed we wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in sharing the news of our latest funding call. A response to the Covid-19 pandemic, VocTech Now was introduced as a direct response to the challenges currently being faced by vocational trainers.

Many of you supported VocTech Now by sharing information about it within your networks and we are very grateful for this. News of VocTech Now reached a wide range of sectors, industries, and places - resulting in a fantastically diverse and wide-range of applications. Thank you again for your support in helping Ufi achieve this.

Assessment of the applications is underway and decisions will be announced tomorrow, Friday 17^th April.

With the continued impact of Covid-19 being felt far and wide, we’re continuing to develop and promote our VocTech How To series. These webinars have proved hugely popular, with hundreds of people registering to take part.

There has now been three topics covered in our How To series which we have put in place to support the shift to a more digital and more remote style of teaching.

The fourth webinar in the series will take place on Thursday 23^rd April, with a live repeat the following Tuesday, and will explore building your business via social media and how to monetise your services.

An organisation which received VocTech Seed funding in 2019 has turned its manufacturing skills to making scrubs for the NHS during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fashion-Enter Ltd’s Factory started production this month after completing a survey of UK manufacturers, who were asked by the Cabinet Office about the protective equipment they would be able to make. 

While some manufacturers are still waiting to hear if their services are required, Fashion Enter’s CEO Jenny Holloway based in North London received a confirmed order for 5,000 sets of scrubs, which began on the 1^st April 2020. She said: “We are now looking at least 20,000 a week. We have ladies in need of work, so we are going to go for it.” 

In 2019, Fashion Enter received Ufi funding to create a remotely accessed interactive resource called Fashion Flyers, which aims to support skill development in industry. The project, called ‘Developing Skills for Manufacturing Through Digital Learning’ was a direct response to a skills gap that has been identified for garment construction and the required technical skills to create garments to the correct client spec. The industry fails to attract newcomers and relies on imported labour mainly from the EU (Sector Skills Council). Since Brexit there has been a net decrease of workers into the UK of 70,000 people and this has had a damaging effect on the revival and growth of garment manufacturing in the UK.  

Fashion-Enter’s work for the NHS was featured on the BBC and in the Daily Telegraph earlier this month.

Disruption caused by the Covid-19 outbreak has affected all aspects of everyday life and changes to education at all levels has been no exception.

Our VocTech Now funding call was quickly introduced to help support vocational training professionals overcome the barriers they are immediately faced with as a result of social distancing measures; including the shift to more online and remote delivery and how to make existing materials and styles of learning more digital.

Our pre-funding webinars for VocTech Now had over 500 attendees and we would like to thank everyone who has expressed interest in this funding call.

The first webinar took place on Thursday 26^th March in the form of a quick-start guide to moving training online as quickly as possible.

The second webinar, which focuses on learning design for online delivery, happened on Thursday 2^nd April and had a live repeat this afternoon. 

The next webinar in the series will be on Thursday 9^th April and will explore choosing and using the right tools for online delivery.

The project, Computer Operated Police Simulator, has been developed by Virtual Reality Simulation Systems Ltd to support the Police with a new form of vocational training that is more interactive and engaging than methods previously used.

COPS was demonstrated on BBC’s Crimewatch because it is currently being used by Lancashire Police Constabulary.

With the impact of COVID- 19 ever-changing on all aspects of our society, those working to deliver vocational education, are in uncharted territory. No longer classroom based, face to face trainers will now need to move to wholly online delivery.

And while there’s a wealth of resources available to support organisations and individuals who want to take on the challenges of delivering training in this way, navigating and accessing the tools available is often a daunting and bewildering prospect.

With that in mind, and with a clear aim of helping vocational trainers rapidly switch to digital delivery, Ufi will be hosting a series of webinars to support this work.

The first of these will take place on Thursday 26th March and we would like to invite you and anyone you know who might benefit, to sign up for this free event.

What Can You Expect?

A series of practical webinars from digital learning experts aimed at face to face trainers who, owing to the current health crisis, now have to move to wholly remote delivery. These aim to provide immediate support them in adopting voctech tools and techniques.

This is not a formal learning programme – we don’t have a syllabus to cover and can therefore cover the same areas from different perspectives. This isn’t about making you an expert but to help you through sudden change.

Blended Learning Essentials differs from the How To series that we are offering as it has been established for several years and is not in response to the Covid-19 outbreak – although the need for helping people implement more and better digital practises is now required more than ever.

Ufi continues to support the VocTech projects during this unusual and challenging time. Our VocTech Seed call will continue to run as planned, but we are reviewing our grant funding plans for 2020 to ensure that we are able to best support vocational learning using digital tools. We’ll be launching our next grant funding call on March 30th so please look out for the details of this.

Digital learning resources and activities are highly flexible, widening learning availability to large numbers of people. But how do you ensure your learning is as accessible as it can be? How do you ensure your technology isn’t excluding certain groups?

In this webinar we give a beginners’ guide to accessibility in digital learning.

More than 64,000 people signed up to take part in last week’s National Numeracy Day on Wednesday 13th May.

The Virtual Festival featured a wide variety of talks from ambassadors, supporters, and the National Numeracy Day Heroes who shared their journey with numbers. Thousands of people took the National Numeracy Challenge, assessing their current numeracy levels and discovering how to improve areas where they felt less confident. 

A lead sponsor, the Ufi team got behind a packed programme with a series of social media posts to promote events taking place throughout the day.

Rebecca Garrod-Waters, Ufi Chief Executive, said: “Having supported the very first National Numeracy Day, it was brilliant to be able to support its first ever virtual event. The day was packed with interesting activities and events. Huge congratulations to the team behind National Numeracy Day for making it such a success.”

A VocTech Seed 19 project has been thinking on its feet in recent weeks to make sure Covid 19 doesn’t derail their innovative approach to supporting learners in the construction industry.

LTE Group - known as The Manchester College - received funding for their project last year. The project, called Gamification in Construction, is a prototype system to support learners through the use of a virtual construction environment that learners can actively engage with.

As a result of Covid 19, and the subsequent closure of the college as part of lockdown, the project team recognised that student access to the system was going to be severely limited. This presented significant challenges for the team and project testing, as their plans relied on user testing to make sure their proposals worked for end users.

Working quickly, the project team have developed a solution to keep their project on track, by developing an app to ensure that the test learning environment can be accessed via smartphone technology. This in turn meant that user testing can carry on as planned.

Many Ufi projects are finding ways to deal with the challenges of lockdown, focussing on ways to keep developing the innovative tools that support learners and focus on the vital vocational skills that are needed.

We’re delighted to report that Ufi Ventures kicked-off 2020 by announcing the first investment in its portfolio.

Newport-based early years education technology specialists Kinderly secured a £150,000 investment from Ufi Ventures as part of a £300,000 fundraising round. The funding will be used to further develop and scale Kinderly’s digital tools for early years childcare professionals. Other investors include the Development Bank of Wales and a number of individual investors.

The award-winning best in-class software tool, Kinderly Together, helps childcare practitioners to learn about and deliver best practice in every part of their work. The tool makes it quick and easy to evidence early years learning, enhances parent communication and provides reporting and tools for progress tracking and planning. Kinderly Learn – developed with a grant from Ufi – provides continuing professional development opportunities for childcare practitioners.

To those of you who are thinking about applying for Ufi funding in the future, we’re pleased to announce that we have successfully introduced our new data management system to our operating processes.

A fully integrated platform, VIMS – which stands for VocTech Integrated Management System - enables the Ufi team to seamlessly manage applications for funding at each stage of the application process. Using a simple portal accessed via our website, applicants can track their applications directly, making the whole process much more user-friendly for applicants too.

The appointments of Alex Cullen, Anthony Bravo, and Paolo Fresia to the Ufi board bring invaluable portfolios of experience and knowledge at what is an exciting time for Ufi VocTech Trust.

Alex Cullen is a Marketing and Communications specialist with a strong corporate social responsibility (CSR) and franchise marketing background who has spent many years in the analytical world of FMCG. Her experience includes heading up the marketing of Plan A, the Marks & Spencer CSR initiative -  a task which informed her passion for sustainability.

Anthony Bravo is the Principal of Basingstoke College of Technology. As a qualified teacher, education has always been Anthony’s passion and he has extensive experience in FE environments, focusing particularly on partnership, community, income generation, and most recently workforce development.

In July 2003, he was appointed to set up Crossways Academy, Lewisham which became a CISCO world reference site for use of ICT in education, as well as providing a template for integrated smart building technology.

Paolo Fresia is an impact investor manager, with a focus on mitigating climate change, sustainable production and consumption, and reducing gender and LGBT+ inequalities. Paolo invests across all asset classes, mainly through specialized fund managers. He has independently advised many individuals, family offices, and institutions on transitioning their assets to sustainable investments. Paolo is also involved in systems change philanthropy and activism by being on the board of the Guerrilla Foundation.

The Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years has recently launched a new continuing professional development (CPD) platform with funding from Ufi VocTech Trust.

The 'EY Smart' platform is a free online training resource that offers short 10-minute courses that can be done on any device at any time.

The content and structure of the training has been designed to put the child at the centre of the learning - so everything can be directly applied to the settings individual learners are working in. Themes include: exploring learning outside, personal care and sharing stories.   

EY Smart offers a simple tool - ideal for the unprecedented challenges currently facing the vocational training sector. With nurseries closed, many EYPs have time to work on their CPD while they are furloughed. They can use the time to upskill and prepare for the release of lockdown. Others who are still working, looking after the children key workers, can complete the short modules at a time which suits them. 

Over the course of the next few months, the Association of Colleges (AoC) will carry out research into colleges’ current capacity to enable high-quality distance learning with support from Ufi VocTech Trust.

Findings from the research will be used to create a post-Covid EdTech strategy for the college sector that leaves no learner behind.

The research will result in a series of articles providing provocations, solutions, and recommendation to the government on the biggest challenges faced when implementing and delivering digital teaching, learning, and assessment.

Part of a programme of Ufi activities launched by Ufi in response to the Covid 19 pandemic, the AoC research is the first of a series of Ufi’s Partnership projects to get underway.

The Department for Education is launching a collection of job-related online courses, teaching numeracy, coding, and internet skills. (See BBC News Item here).

Ufi are pleased that government is recognising the importance of ensuring people have access to digital tools for skills development. We have been working hard to support the adult teaching and training sector to ensure that provision of skills is protected as much as possible against the challenges that the lockdown presents.

The online platform, The Skills Toolkit, represents an opportunity for individuals to maintain and gain important skills for work - something we have being calling for since the start of the social distancing measures. We are pleased that a number of the people we work with have been able to contribute, but there is much more to be done, both to open up the provision and to ensure that essential skills for the UK workplace do not fall behind.

Ensuring people are able to access skills whilst they are in furlough is hugely important, and a number of the people we work with and projects we have supported have made amazing offers to support people in this time including Learnerbly, Agylia, Cuppa, and Kinderly - who can all be found on our VocTech Resources Hub here.   

Alongside our Resources page we are continuing to develop our webinars and the feedback from the first four sessions in our VocTech ‘How To’ series has been really positive, with both training and education professionals and those who need advice on getting started with moving their operations online quickly and efficiently, finding them useful and supportive.

Hosted by experts relevant to respective topics, the free webinars are a great opportunity to hear about best practice and ways to adapt to utilising digital tools more quickly and, perhaps more importantly, – ask questions to be answered live.

Due to the volume of questions being asked during the first session ‘How To Move Training Online – A Trainer’s Quick-Start Guide’ we will be running another live session, but this time with the focus being on questions from the audience.

Every year, tragically more workers are killed at work than in wars. As yesterday (28^th April) was International Worker’s Memorial Day, the Coronavirus pandemic is a stark reminder of the important role of trade union health and safety in saving and protecting workers’ lives.

Migrant key workers are at the forefront of the Covid-19 response, both here in the UK and worldwide. As with all key workers, they are essential to our societies and economies, not just in times of crisis, but always.  However, according to a report from Irwin Mitchell and the Centre for Corporate Accountability (2009), a disproportionate number of migrant workers are killed in work-related accidents. Specifically, in the construction industry where workers are at a higher risk of accidents than any other industry in the UK (Craw et al., 2007), migrant workers are twice as likely to die than those from the UK....
