Hi Mary Jones,
Here in Brooklyn, Fall is very much in the air. Shorter days, cooler weather, a shifting of energy. I''m embracing the change and am definitely ready to reacquaint myself with some of my favorite sweaters!
And yet, like most every other parent, I''m distracted by concern over how school is unfolding for our kids. And I''m aware of the struggles so many in our community are dealing with when it comes to advocating for what their kids need, academically and beyond.
Last week, Seth Perler and I recorded a special vlog to share our thoughts around supporting our neurodiverse kids, bearing in mind what we''re hearing about their increasing lack of motivation, lack of engagement, virtual school woes, tanking grades, and more. Click below to watch the video.

My guests are Understood experts Amanda Morin and Bob Cunningham, who take us inside Take N.O.T.E.: how to use it, why it was created, what makes it such a unique and powerful tool for parents and caregivers, and more. Hi Mary Jones,
Last month, executive functioning coach Seth Perler and I asked you what your biggest concerns were leading up to the return to school. What we heard is that the unknowns are creating stress about how your families will cope with the demands, and that figuring out how to balance your needs and responsibilities while giving your kids what they need feels overwhelming.
We want you to feel confident in the decisions you make and where you focus your energy this fall when it comes to your children, whether they''re in the classroom, remote learning, homeschooling/unschooling, a hybrid model, or all (or none) of the above.
So we''re getting together for a live, one-time workshop to share out best ideas and help you prioritize and plan for your family. We''re calling it, WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING, ANYWAY? Here''s the plan:
. In the first hour, Seth and I will share our best ideas and strategies for formulating a plan specific to your family''s circumstances
. In the second hour and beyond, we''re all yours for answering questions, coaching, troubleshooting. We''re committed to staying on the call until everyone''s questions are answered.
. Afterward, we''ll send out a PDF of resources, including scripts, planning templates, and more so you can integrate what works for you.
Here are the details...
Date & Time: Tuesday, August 4, 7pm EST / 4pm PDT
Replay: We''ll send out a replay in case you miss the live call
Resources: All registrants will receive a downloadable packet with additional resources, scripts, and planning templates
Cost: Our goal is to make this accessible to everyone who wants to attend while still covering costs related to our time investment and resources, so we''re offering different price options. Please choose the price that works best for your budget and the value you see in what we''re offering.
We know these are challenging times and it can be hard to know what to do and how to move forward. Our hope is that you leave this workshop feeling more confident, and optimistic, and ready for whatever comes next.

Debbie
Hi Mary Jones,
I''ve heard from a number of people who are interested in the Differently Wired Club, but they have questions - they''re not sure it''s exactly the right fit, what they can expect day to day and month to month, and whether it will be worth their time and resources.
I''m guessing you might have some questions, too.
I thought I''d make it easy for you to connect and get your specific questions answered. So today I''m opening up my Zoom Room at 2pm EST (11am PDT) for anyone who wants to drop in.
If you want to swing by - (super casual, I''ll bring the coffee) - just go to my Zoom Room sometime between 2 and 3pm EST today, 9/23. I''ll hang out there for about an hour.
Sound good?
And if you can''t make it but have specific questions for me, send me an email and I''ll get back to you.
(Lastly, if you''ve checked out the Club and realize it''s not for you, just click here and I won''t email you about it again!)
All best,
Debbie
Hi Mary Jones,
I''m going live with Tina Payne Bryson in 2 hours!
Looking for a burst of calm + connection + "we see you" + "you''ve got this"? Join me and Tina for a special Facebook live on the Tilt Together group today at 6pm EST / 3pm PDT. Tina will be taking your questions and giving us some insights for how we can keep showing up for our kids, even during remote learning, even when things feel so hard.

Hi Mary Jones,
My sweet Asher, the inspiration behind Tilt Parenting, my differently wired co-conspirer who helped me launch my podcast and website nearly five years ago, celebrated his sixteenth birthday earlier this week.
I spent the days leading up to his his big day doing what I could to make a milestone birthday in the midst of a pandemic, 3,000-plus miles away from his closest friends, special.
It wasn''t perfect. He woke up earlier than he wanted to. It was so hot and humid that spending much time outdoors was difficult. My breakfast muffins didn''t turn out as delicious as usual. He was missing his friends and feeling the sadness that so often accompanies birthdays and getting older.
But it was also full of some beautiful moments. We went for a long walk and talked politics, spent quality time with my sister and parents, and baked an incredible chocolate cake together. And between dinner and cake, I surprised him with a screening of a video I''d edited together of messages from friends from around the globe. His reaction filled me up to the brim.
PS... I just listened to an excellent episode of Todd and Cathy Adams'' podcast, Zen Parenting, about back-to-school, and loved what they had to share about the "ambiguous loss" we''re all experiencing right now, as well as the importance of being open to the positive things that may come out of this challenging time. I was lifted up by their conversation...perhaps you will be, too.
THIS WEEK''S PODCAST
Think there''s a connection between exercise and kids'' ADHD symptoms lessening? The research agrees. In this episode, I'm talking with coach, counselor, and author Gabriel Villarreal about the intersection of mental health and exercise for differently wired kids. Gabriel has ADHD himself and has experienced the convergence of these three topics in a profoundly personal way. Gabriel shares with us the concept of exercise as medicine, the differences and considerations of exercise benefits for ADHD and ASD, and advice for parents and coaches who want to help their differently wired kids and athletes thrive mentally and physically.

Hi Mary Jones,
This week''s Parenting in Place masterclass is sure to be fantastic, in part because the speakers comprise a dream team, and in part because the topic is one of my favorites: Motivation: How to boost our kids'' drive, agency, and personal growth, even when things are hard.
It''s all happening live tomorrow (Wed 7/29) at 8PM est and available on-demand through August 31. FYI, I''m producing tomorrow night''s event and will be wrangling questions and managing the chat -- I hope to see you there! See the whole line up and register here.

Hi Mary Jones,
I did a Facebook live in the Tilt Together Facebook group yesterday where I shared five things I''m focusing on right now...five things that are helping me navigate this unwieldy, rather formidable emotional and mental wall that seems to be blocking my way (and that of just about everyone else I know) these days.
Here''s what I shared:
1: Understand that no one is motivated right now (and that''s okay). We are collectively hitting the wall. Motivation is bound to plummet, for both us and our kids. Knowing (accepting?) this is what''s happening and trusting it is temporary will help us move through it.
2: Know that kids are regressing. We''re likely seeing behaviors re-emerge that we thought were long gone, or slipping in academics or skills. This may cause is to feel even more worried about our kids'' already uneven developmental timelines. Again, understanding that such regressions are "normal" within the context of the life disruption we''re experiencing is key. As is reminding ourselves that these regressions are temporary.
3: Understand that we are regressing, too. The strategy? LOWER...THE...BAR.
4: Make sure our kids know we have their back. Our kids may feel like they''re losing time, that their childhood is being stolen from them. They''re disappointed and frustrated and scared. And they don't have the life experience to know what we intellectually know. that this too will pass. Our job? Show up for them and make sure they hear/feel/see from us that we''ve got them. Every single day.
5: Be vigilant about practicing self-care and self-compassion. It''s critical that we do these things proactively, even if we don't feel like it, even if we don't immediately feel the benefit afterward. Any little bit of fuel we put in our reserve tank by treating ourselves with grace and tending to our emotional, mental, and physical needs, matters.

Hi Mary Jones,
As summer marches on and plans for back to school seem to change on an hourly basis, I''m noticing many of us are hitting the wall. The ongoing uncertainty, coupled with the sheer exhaustion of what has been a more demanding work / life reality for months and months, is taking its toll.
I''m seeing this trend among my friends, my colleagues, community members, and within my own family.
If you''re struggling with what is, I encourage you to do what I''m doing - lean in to communities where you feel safe and seen, reach out for help in the form of coaches or therapists if you need it, and take conscious action to bring more peace into your life, even if only for a few minutes here and there. Every little bit helps.
If you''re reading this email, I hope you know that you''re not alone. You''re part of a community of brave, generous, loving humans raising complicated, but incredible children. And we''ve got you.
THIS WEEK''S PODCAST
This week I re-released a conversation with my husband Derin, who was a little nervous to sit in the hot seat. I know figuring how to be a good partner while raising an atypical kid can be incredibly challenging, especially because both people are going through their own individual process in figuring it out. But at the same time, it's so important for the child and for the survival of the family that partners find a way to work with each other instead of against, and unfortunately, the latter can so often be the default when we're feeling tired or stressed or overwhelmed. We get into it ALL in this episode.

Hi Mary Jones,
When I created the Differently Wired Club exactly one year ago, I had no idea how much life would change in 12 short months. And I couldn''t have predicted just how much we''d need each other as we navigate this new landscape of remote, hybrid, and homeschool learning together while facing our own fears and stressors.
I hope the special podcast episodes, Facebook lives, and other resources I''ve been sharing have provided some comfort and useful tools. I''ll continue bringing you these kinds resources to help you move through this.
But if you''re craving more support and connection, I invite you to consider joining my private membership community, the Differently Wired Club.
I created the Differently Wired Club to help parents take action and see the transformation they want in their families. It''s designed for people who benefit from hands-on learning, support, and accountability. And I''ve just added some new, exciting features to provide more ways for people to engage and get what they need. Here''s what Club membership includes:
. Monthly themes with videos and prompts to guide you through the shifts
. Live monthly coaching calls hosted by me and parent coach Margaret Webb
. Virtual book club in which we read a different parenting together book each month and the authors join us for a live conversation
. Twice monthly virtual office hours for intimate connection with Margaret, me, and others members
. Ongoing support, troubleshooting, accountability, and sharing with a community of like-minded parents
The Differently Wired Club is my heart work. More than anything, I want to help parents level up and create more joy, possibility, and ease in their families'' lives. It''s possible. I promise.
Because my priority is engaging with the Club and building the community there, I only open the doors to new members three times a year. They''re open today and will close this Friday, September 29th. New members will join the rest of us on October 1. The next time I open the doors will be late January 2021.

Hi Mary Jones,
I''m on vacation this week, so I''m going to keep this newsletter short and sweet.
But in case you''re wondering how things are going, I''ve had ice cream nearly every night, have managed to not get sunburnt (there''s still time), have read about 1/3 of a book, have gone on two lovely bike rides, spent a magical afternoon on the beach with friends, and have swum in the ocean more than I probably have in the past ten years added up.
All that to say, I am feeling more human that I have in, oh, say, six months. We all are. And for that, I''m grateful.
In two days we''ll be packing up and heading home. My intention is to bring this sense of humanness and calm with us.
(Sending some your way as well, in case you need it.)

Hi Mary Jones,
Ever since NYC closed down in mid-March, our family''s world has gotten smaller, quieter. We haven''t ventured out much, haven''t visited any family, haven''t ventured to the other side Hudson River. We''ve felt very stuck, and very isolated. And this week it''s been feeling really hard.
So I''m thankful that a few days ago, Asher mentioned that he wished we could at least go to the beach. After all...it is summer.
I''m glad he said that because, as it turns out, we could go to the beach. In fact, a quick Google search showed me that Rockaway Beach was only 12 miles away, and that we could get there in about a half hour.
I''d had no idea.
It was there all along.
So this morning, I woke him at 8:30am (typically he''d be in bed until 11 or so), packed up a blanket, bottle of water, towels, sunscreen, and two charged Kindles, and we headed out.
What awaited us was bliss. Waves, ocean, fresh air, a sea breeze, seagulls, spaciousness...PEACE.
Our world had gotten so small and closed that I hadn''t realized I was inadvertently co-conspiring to keep it that way.
We only stayed for 2 hours before heading back, but I''m pretty sure we''ve found our new favorite spot. And just knowing it''s there for us, anytime we want, feels like enough.
THIS WEEK''S PODCAST
This week my guest is Allison Carmen, author of The Gift of Maybe: Finding Hope and Possibility in Uncertain Times. I discovered Allison and her work while doing research for my book, and her message of embracing possibility and uncertainty deeply resonated with me. I have a feeling you'll have the same reaction when you listen to our conversation. Allison shares her thoughts about how embracing just one simple word-maybe-can completely transform the way we're experiencing our everyday lives. A timely episode... have a listen.

Hi Mary Jones,
Some of the most popular podcast episodes I''ve aired since launching TiLT are those featuring executive functioning coach Seth Perler. If you''ve heard him speak, you know he is PASSIONATE about supporting atypical kids with EF challenges and I think his content is gold.
Seth has decided to follow up last year''s brilliant virtual summit on all things executive function with with a brand new, updated event: The Executive Functioning Online Summit (TEFOS).
Seth has a great line-up - 24 speakers including Dr. Ross Greene, How to ADHD''s Jessica McCabe, Smart But Scattered author Peg Dawson, Dr. Stuart Shanker, and many more - and I know that this series will once again over-deliver.
Like most virtual summits, attending the entire summit is 100% free Friday, Aug 21, 22, 23. And then if you want to have ongoing access to all the materials plus some bonuses, that''s available for purchase as well.
And that''s the deal...just wanted to make it was on your radar! Here''s a link if you want to learn more and sign up.
Best,
Debbie
PS... Seth has also started a Facebook group just for summit attendees and he''s doing a bunch of Facebook Lives in there to answer people''s questions. You can find that here.
Hi Mary Jones,
Anytime I hear the word "resilience," I see it as this illusive quality that I crave for our differently wired children, but which can seem so far away from where our kids are. After all, the definition of resilience is "the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress," and it is exactly in these places that our children often struggle more than their neurotypical peers.
But last night while listening to Michele Borba and Madeline Levine talk about anxiety and resilience in the Parenting in Place webinar, Michele said something that struck me. She said, "Resilient children are made, not born."
What I love about this is the reminder that our kids are always changing. That we have the ability-through the way we model behavioral, respect their timelines, meet their needs, and commit to showing up for them-to help our children grow and develop in ways we might not be able to imagine right now.
That they are, in fact, adaptable and resilient simply because they are human.
THIS WEEK''S PODCAST
If your child consistently struggles doing tasks in a timely manner-whether that's getting her shoes and coat on to leave for school or fill in a homework sheet or take a timed math test-he or she likely has challenges relating to PROCESSING SPEED. Slow processing speed can often be found co-existing with neurological differences like ADHD, giftedness, anxiety, and more. What makes it so difficult for kids to manage and parents and teachers to understand is that there is often a marked disconnect between a child's intellectual capability and the pace at which they execute certain tasks. In this week''s episode, Dr. Ellen Braaten, author of When Bright Kids Can't Keep Up, explains to us exactly what slow processing speed is, describes how it shows up in kids, and gives her insights on how parents (and teachers) can best support kids for whom this is a challenge.

Hi Mary Jones,
At a time when there are just so many questions - what''s the best choice for my child, how is Covid impacting their social and cognitive development, is it time to try homeschooling, will school be safe, will my kid be okay in the long run, to pod or not to pod - it''s easy to forget that we are the experts in our own children.
What I''m gleaning from so many parents is that uncertainty about how to best navigate school re-entry is leading them to mistrust their ability to do right by their child.
Here''s my advice:
Take deep breaths.
Make slow moves.
Get good rest.
Stay curious.
Take time to be present.
And remind yourself every single day that you are exactly the parent your child needs.
Because you are.

Hi Mary Jones,
Anyone else out there getting dragged into their kids'' emotional roller coasters these days?
When we''re particularly depleted, it can feel next to impossible to lift the safety bar and step off the ride.
This is me today. 100 percent.
It can feel so difficult, to allow for their unhappiness and to not let it highjack our own emotional and mental well-being. But I''m also aware that such discomfort is an invitation to do our own inner work and embrace our own personal growth spurts (which in turn enables us to better show up for our kids, and ourselves).
Here''s to leaning in <3
THIS WEEK''S PODCAST
This week I released a powerful conversation about stigma with author and parenting expert Ann Douglas (Parenting Through the Storm). Ann has raised 4 atypical kids and is differently-wired herself, and has a lot to share on the topic of negative stigmas-why they exist, how they're perpetuated, what they do to us and our kids, and most importantly, what we can do to combat them. I LOVE this episode as I believe openness and transparency is how we change the conversation around difference and challenge the negative stigmas that exist. Hope you do too!
