In-App Scripting in IO Ninja Just Got a Major Upgrade

In-app scripting has been part of IO Ninja for quite some time now. It allows you to generate and transmit packets programmatically - a valuable tool for non-trivial testing scenarios! However, it was not very easy to use due to the lack of code-assisting features (such as auto-completion).

Well, until now!

If you had tried in-app scripting before but were disappointed by the lack of auto-completion - rejoice! Now the Script pane is basically a mini-IDE featuring:

Code auto-completion
Class member lists
Function argument tips
Brace matching

Listen & Respond To IO Events

Besides the code-assisting editor, another prominent feature added to in-app scripting in IO Ninja is the ability to write event handlers for events such as:

Incoming (RX) data
Connect
Disconnect

For example, the following script sends every incoming packet back (i.e., acts as an echo-server):

Whenever a session writes an event to the log, your onLogRecord handler is called. Inside this handler, you can analyze the event parameters (such as recordCode) and react appropriately.

All of the above allows you to conveniently write and run your IO testing scripts right from within IO Ninja!

IO Ninja on macOS App Store is Now FREE (with In-App Purchases)

With the previous release, IO Ninja was accepted to the official Apple macOS App Store - and that was a big step forward. Unfortunately, the need to pay upfront stopped many macOS users from trying IO Ninja.

With this release, we decided to make IO Ninja FREE for download on the App Store!

Now, you can download and try IO Ninja for FREE, and if you like what you see, you conveniently purchase a registered version via In-App Purchases - right from within the IO Ninja app itself!

Session Linking a.k.a. Universal Redirect

Linking any two sessions inside IO Ninja allows you to route data between the two automatically. Before this version, however, you had to manually establish connections in both sessions before the automatic data routing could occur - limiting the field of application for this great feature.

With this release, IO Ninja routes not only data but also connect and disconnect requests. It means that now, IO Ninja can be used as a Universal Redirector between any transports!

For example, this is how to route TCP ? SSL (thus providing access to HTTPS-only websites for legacy devices without SSL support):

Allen-Bradley DF1 Analyzer

Our Serial Tap users who tried sniffing communications to Allen-Bradley PLCs were craving for the DF1 protocol analyzer to help them navigate through the mess of serial traffic capture logs.

Your request is our command! Well ... not always, of course, but in this case - it was!

Protocol layers are color-coded, so it''s easy to see which bytes belong to which layer. You can expand all the protocol layers and click header fields to highlight the actual bytes carrying those fields. And of course, at any time, you can remove the DF1 Analyzer and get back to the raw, unprocessed serial data stream.

Packet History & Packet Library

This is yet another case of a feature suggested by our users. In the past, we received quite a few requests to make it possible to define custom sets of packets so that you can choose and send those packets with a click of the mouse. Well, it''s here now and it''s called the Packet Library!

As for the transmit history - it was kind of always there, but it was implicit, invisible, and as such, not so intuitive to use. Now, there is a dedicated Packet History pane where you can conveniently inspect all recently transmitted packets. If a packet in the history pane is also a part of the packet library, you will see a star and the packet''s name next to it.

In either of those new panes, send any packet with a double-click, drag it into the editor to modify before sending, or hover your mouse to inspect the packet contents in a hex-view tool-tip.

In-App Scripting Improvements

To help you get started with the IO Ninja in-app scripting, we added a bunch of simple stock scripts to serve as the basis for your packet templates, programmatically driven transmissions, or other testing scripts. There is a new Stock Script Browser so that you can preview and select a proper stock script for your use-case.

The management of in-app script files was also refined. You will see no more annoying save-as dialogs, and MRU (most-recently-used) script file lists were added for your convenience.

Also, session system logs are now directly accessible from the main app for the sake of employing the good-old printf-debugging in your in-app scripts.
