Strange Loop 2020 Update

March 10, 2020

Hello Strange Loopers!

This is gonna be a weird year. Strange Loop 2020 is 6+ months away (Oct 1-3) and it''s impossible for us to predict how things will go with the coronavirus.

For now though, Strange Loop is ON. We will continue monitoring things closely, make adjustments, and follow the advice of health and government authorities. The safety of our speakers and attendees is of prime importance.

We have already made some changes to our 2020 plans. To accommodate a smaller conference we will not be using the Stifel Theatre this year, and the entire conference will take place at Union Station. We love the theatre, and it is heartbreaking not to use it, but this gives us the most flexibility as things change.

On the preconference day (Oct 1), we will have three larger events: PWL (Papers We Love) Conference, Software With a Mission, and a new event: System Safety, a day of conversations about how to incorporate system safety principles into software design and how to respond when it turns out your software isn''t safe.

Also in the works, a great new look for our web site should be available next month!

Stay healthy, wash your hands, think deep thoughts, and we hope to see you this fall...

In person event canceled

May 4, 2020

We have reached the hard conclusion that gathering 1000+ people from all over the world for an in-person event is just too dangerous and risky this year, so there will be no 2020 in-person Strange Loop.

We would like to do something online, but we are still just in the early stages of figuring out what that could be. It will certainly be different than our typical in-person event but we are still hoping to retain some of what makes Strange Loop special. Please stay tuned as we figure it out. We''re still looking at approximately the same time frame - late Sept/early Oct and hope to have more to share by the end of May.

We expect to shift back to an in-person event next year (Sept 30-Oct 2, 2021 in St. Louis).

More personally, I had to send a lot of very sad emails this weekend to vendors and organizers and sponsors and speakers, some of whom we have literally been working with for 10 years. The extended family that puts this together every year and the faithful fans among you are the best part of Strange Loop and I will miss seeing you all in person this year. Thank you so much for all the kind words and offers of support as we work through this.

I hope you and yours are staying healthy and safe and that your jobs are doing ok and that things will be back to a place where we can be together again next year.
