1. Right this minute, someone is stealing my stuff - Jonathan Goodman

This is my response to a member of Online Trainers Unite, our private Facebook group, who asked what to do about a client who was posting the trainer's workouts for her friends without giving the trainer credit.

There's a legitimate chance that, right this minute, someone is stealing one of my books, or sharing something I created without authorization.

Just the other day, I heard about a site that was illegally selling the Online Trainer Academy curriculum. We'll do what we can to take it down, since OTA is the most valuable intellectual property I've ever created.

But I've learned over the years to pick my battles. If I'm on the fence, I think of this story from Marc Ecko of Ecko Unltd:

He and a clothing buyer walked past a street vendor selling illegal knockoffs of Ecko's products. When he complained, the buyer told him, "You'd be more upset if your stuff wasn't here."

If we're being honest, I'll bet most of us feel the same way. If nobody wanted to do your workouts, wouldn't that be worse than someone sharing them without your permission?

Given a choice, we'd rather deal with occasional unauthorized use of our content than wonder why nobody cares enough to steal it.

My advice:

When you see someone sharing your workouts without giving you credit, reach out. Tell them you're flattered to see they like your program so much they want to share it with their friends.

But, understandably, you'd like credit for your work.

You aren't just looking for attribution. Your goal is to turn that client into a marketing asset. She clearly has the attention of her friends and followers. Will she give you access to the people doing your workouts to see if they're interested in working with you?

Most important is this:

Spend your time trying to get good. Try to put yourself in a position where people want to do your workouts.

And if someone steals one of them? To paraphrase a thousand Oscar nominees, it's an honor just to be plagiarized.

2. The hidden risks of home workouts

When COVID-19 locked us out of our gyms, we not only had to scramble to come up with home workouts for our clients, we also had to create programs for ourselves, based mostly or entirely on body-weight exercises.

"Many people are finding it a welcome break from heavy lifting, and say their joints feel a lot better," wrote Tom Venuto on Facebook.

But he also offered a warning:

Not long after he started pushing himself to set new records on body-weight exercises, an old injury returned: medial epicondylitis, better known as golfer's elbow. "And damn it, I don't even golf!" he said.

He stopped doing the chin-ups that caused the injury, but the damage was done.

The takeaway: No matter the exercise, when you "do too much too soon, or train for ego," you're setting yourself up for an overuse injury.

1. The scourge of bogus business coaches - Jonathan Goodman

The 21-year-old trainer reached out to me on Instagram. We ended up talking on the phone for 30 minutes.

The conversation left me boiling mad. ?

Before contacting me, the young trainer spoke to an online business coach who tried to sell him a $6,000 program.

There was no assessment of the trainer's baseline knowledge or training skill. It was just a hard sell: "I''m going to make you rich if you give me a lot of money."

When the trainer said he couldn''t afford it-it was more money than he'd ever seen in his life-the coach pressed him to take out a loan, telling him only losers think that way. Winners take risks.

And I haven't told you the worst part.

When the trainer asked about a guarantee, the coach said the plan was battle-tested. It's the trainer's fault if he wasn't successful.

Let me say two things in response:

1. Telling a young trainer to go into debt is evil

It's an abuse of your perceived status to pressure a young, inexperienced coach into making a bad decision. His goal should be to get out of debt, not take on more of it.

Especially when you're selling a 90-day program with no guarantee of success. Which brings me to my second point.

2. It's your job to guarantee success

If you can''t guarantee success, you either have no confidence in your program, or you don''t have the confidence to sell it to the right people.

Either way, you shouldn''t be in business.

Want to know the number-one reason why an aspiring online trainer doesn't join OTA?

It's because they were ripped off by some aggressive business coach whose ads are filled with unverifiable endorsements from "Steve B in Baltimore" and "Jessica A in Albuquerque."

They extract their money (usually $5,000 or more) and leave their victims with a ton of debt and no income to pay it off.

The takeaway: That 21-year-old I spoke to? He decided to test out the new OTA Essentials plan for $87 a month. Which, I'm happy to report, he can afford without going into debt.

2. Training clients on Zoom is not online training - Ren Jones

Ren is an Online Trainer Academy mentor and OTA Level 2 graduate.

A lot of trainers, by necessity, are using Zoom to coach their clients.

But don't kid yourself. Coaching a client on Zoom isn't online coaching. It's a pivot, a new way to exchange your time for money.

Imagine if you wrote a book, but only sold it to people who paid you to read it to them an hour at a time.

Sure, they pay decent money to listen to you, but it's not scalable. You're still limited in the exact same way you were in the gym training people in person.

Online coaching is providing a solution to many people simultaneously.

It's not a pivot. It's an innovation. It's like selling your book to as many people as possible, knowing they''ll read it at their convenience.

Don't get me wrong: Zoom is a useful tool for a unique situation. But I hope it fades away when gyms reopen, and coaches and clients who prefer to train in person can return to it.

Because coaching online is not online coaching. ?

3. I miss handshakes - Lou Schuler

If not for COVID-19, I would be flying home right now, following a long, invigorating weekend as emcee of the Fitness Summit in Kansas City.

I attended my first Summit in 2004, and almost immediately it became the most important event on my calendar. I can't count the number of future colleagues, coauthors, contacts, and compatriots I met there, including Jonathan Goodman in 2012.

Each relationship, every connection, began the same way: with a handshake.

Even if I forget the person's name a moment later (and I probably will), the good intentions of that initial contact remain.

The handshake may be the most important form of nonverbal communication we have. It signals openness or reticence; trust or fear; confidence or wariness.

And in the fitness industry, a strong grip with a callused hand offers proof of time in the weight room. It's the ultimate flex. ?

Next year at this time, unless something goes disastrously wrong, we'll return to our favorite conferences and seminars, where we'll catch up with acquaintances and make new ones.

But how will we greet each other? Public health experts will tell us not to shake hands, and we'll probably comply.

It's the right thing to do, but it's also a loss. I miss handshakes already. ?

1. The #1 online training mistake, and what to do instead - Jonathan Goodman

Too many first-time online trainers ask questions like these:

"What type of content should I post?"

"What social media should I use?"

"Should I use IGTV to debut my brand online?"

Trying to figure these things out at the beginning is a massive waste of time.

The impact of one social platform vs. another is completely irrelevant when no one is paying attention.

Focus instead on making real connections to real people. Pick a platform-it doesn't matter which one-and use it to create a purposeful network.

It doesn't need to be big. Some of the most successful networks are quite small. Your goal isn't to reach a lot of people. It's to reach the right kind of people with content that matters to them. ?

At the Online Trainer Academy, we've been teaching people to do the same basic thing since 2013.

Think how crazy that is. How much has technology changed since 2013? How much has marketing changed?

What hasn't changed is the foundational principle of online training: building real connections to real people.

The takeaway: The first step is to figure out who you're targeting. Reach out to them, support them, help them do what they're interested in, and include them in what you're doing.

Special things happen when you do it this way. Nothing happens when you don't.

2. You will always be accepted by someone - Alex Cartmill

Alex is head coach for the Online Trainer Academy.

Using external validation as a path to self-confidence is counterproductive.

It leaves you not only craving more of it, but also relying on something outside your control to make you content with who you really are.

The reality is this:

No matter what you look like, or the clothes you wear, or how much you make, or how good you are at what you do, you will always be judged by someone.

You will always be unattractive to someone.

You will always have people trying to hold you back.

But the converse is also true.

No matter what you look like, or the clothes you wear, or how much you make, or how good you are at what you do, you will always be accepted by someone. You will always be attractive to someone. You will always have people who want to see you succeed and will push you forward.

You'll always have to contend with both groups, no matter what you do. And, most of the time, you get to decide which ones you let into your life, and which ones you push away.

Take advantage of that control.

3. What will the post-pandemic fitness industry look like?

We're seeing more and more predictions about how the pandemic will permanently change the fitness industry.

But if history teaches us anything, it's that the eye of the hurricane is the worst place to be standing when you're trying to chart its path.

That's especially true when the source of the crisis is a virus that, despite its lack of sentience, has outsmarted too many world leaders.

But here's one prediction that may hold up:

"Small, private gyms seem to finally have the upper hand" over big, commercial gyms, writes John Rusin on Facebook.

The high-volume business model-lots of members pay a small monthly fee-is pure genius in a normal time.

People who love to work out pay a little money for unlimited access to expensive equipment. People who hate to work out pay a little money to hold onto the dream of someday finding more inspiration.

But it stops working when no one can use the equipment, or when access is restricted to keep members safe.

That, Rusin says, shifts the competitive advantage from high-volume to high-value fitness businesses, where "trainers and owners . must show their worth daily to their clientele in the form of relationships and results."

Even in the center of the storm, that prediction seems like a good bet.
