The Fred Hollows Foundation Sign Up Information

With Father’s Day right around the corner, we wanted to put a spotlight on dads who go the extra mile for their children.

Randy is one of those fathers. His son Alexcis is only 13-years-old, and had suffered from cataract in both eyes for two years when we met him. Randy felt heartbroken every time he watched his son struggle.

Alexcis couldn’t see clearly and was hit by a motorbike on the road in front of his house. Luckily, Alexcis escaped with just a few cuts and bruises but it scared him so much that he wouldn’t go too far from home.

Alexcis and his family live on Siargao Island in the Philippines, a three-hour boat ride from the mainland city of Surigao del Norte. Adequate health care is simply not available on Siargao Island, and the cost of traveling to the mainland was just too much for Randy.

That was until Randy found out about The Fred Hollows Foundation’s work. With help from school health workers trained by The Foundation, Randy was able to get Alexcis cataract surgery.

This program, supported by The Fred Hollows Foundation, in Surigao del Norte is now accessible to 120 elementary and 26 high schools. That’s 30,000 students who have access to proper eye health care, thanks to your support.

Dear Peter,

You might recall Peter Datjing Burarrwanga’s story from not too long ago. Peter is a renowned Aboriginal artist and Gumatj elder whose livelihood and ability to create art came under threat because of blindness caused by cataract.

However, thanks to the generosity of people like you, The Foundation was able to provide Peter with sight-restoring surgery so that he could return to his life, preserve his heritage and fulfil his responsibilities as an elder within his community.

Peter’s artwork is a window into a culture that spans generations. Now he’s provided one of his very popular designs, entitled the ‘Ganiny and Fog’, to be used by Specsavers to create limited edition frames. You can read more about it here.

For every one of these beautiful frames sold, Specsavers will donate $25 to The Foundation so that we can continue our work and provide eye care to more people like Peter in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

In the late ‘70s, Fred and I went around Australia together with a team of eye health workers to examine and treat people in remote and rural areas.

What we discovered shocked us all. We found that our beautiful Aboriginal people were living in conditions worse than some third world countries. There were hundreds of people who were blind and thousands more who were going blind.

True to form, Fred was pretty vocal about how outrageous this was. He opened up people’s eyes to the plight of our Aboriginal people in Australia. He criticised authorities for the “appalling state of Aboriginal health”.

Over the course of two years, under the National Trachoma and Eye Health Program, we screened more than 100,000 people and treated over 25,000 people. We helped halve trachoma in Aboriginal communities.

What we started all those years ago is still having an impact today, and not just because of Fred but also because of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ involvement in the program. It was all about putting Aboriginal health in Aboriginal hands and that is still how we work in communities today.

The Fred Hollows Foundation started because people like you believed in the exact same things as Fred – that no one in a developed country like Australia should go needlessly blind.

Peter, thanks to your support, we’ve made massive in-roads. When we first set out, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples were 10 times more likely to go blind than other Australians. Today they are three times more likely to go blind. We want that gap to be zero.

That’s why we have developed our most exciting and ambitious plan to finally close the eye health gap within the next five years so that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People are no longer avoidably blind.

I know Fred is with us every step of the way, and he would be so proud of how far we’ve come. His voice is urging me on, because the fight isn’t over. We need your help to finish the job.

The Fred Hollows Foundation has once again partnered with the southern hemisphere’s highest public residential tower for the 12th annual Eureka Stair Climb, which will be held on Sunday 17 November at Southbank, Melbourne.

This year there’s a brand new event category: Virtual Eureka Stair Climb

The virtual climb allows anyone in Australia to take part in this challenge from anywhere at any time between 10 October – which is World Sight Day – until 17 November.

This means you can take your time accumulating 1,642 steps (88 floors) by climbing the stairs wherever you are: gym, office, home, bush or the beach!

Once you’ve completed the required 1,642 steps, you can challenge yourself to go even further and climb the equivalent distance of the Burj Khalifa or Mt Everest!

Whether you are at the Eureka Tower on 17 November or keen to participate at your own pace, you can step up to restore sight.

Restoring sight isn’t easy, especially in remote and rural areas. 

Sometimes we have to do things a little differently to reach the people who need us the most.

Sometimes that is in the form of an outreach eye camp. An eye camp is where we take a team of talented doctors, nurses and health workers to the most rural and remote locations to set up a makeshift clinic to find those who need sight saving surgery.

As you can imagine, these can be lively events - like the one we recently held at Vang Vieng Hospital in Laos. Learn what happens at an eye outreach camp here.

Whether we use an existing hospital or a mobile unit, we’re opening our doors to people who might otherwise be left behind. And we’re only able to do it because of you, Peter. We never forget that.

It's been a difficult few months, and our heart goes out to everyone in Australia who has been impacted by the bushfire crisis.

We are in absolute shock at the devastation many of our communities have been experiencing and continue to experience. To our supporters family, friends and staff - we are with you.

The scale of the bushfires means that many of us have been affected, whether directly or indirectly. As we see the images and hear the news of our fellow Australians, animals and country being devastated, it is hard not to be emotional.

Fred once said that “caring about other people is what being a human is all about” and he had “great faith in the humanitarian nature of the Average Australian.” To see the outpouring of generosity by everyday Australians is a testament to who we are. We know Fred would be proud to see us taking care of one another in these times of great need.

We acknowledge the extraordinary challenges that Australia faces now, and into the future. There are many organisations on the ground who are equipped to deal with the immediate needs of the crisis. We choose to support them right now, and we hope you will too.

A few months before he passed away, Fred Hollows checked himself out of hospital and hopped on a plane to Vietnam.

The Foundation’s international journey started here - with a special photo, a boy named Giap and a promise Fred was determined to keep.

Fred had pledged to help the needlessly blind in Vietnam, and on his last overseas trip, he started training a workforce of keen Vietnamese eye surgeons to perform modern cataract surgery.

Giap is the little boy in this iconic image of Fred and, over the years, his story has come to symbolise everything we represent. To find out the whole story behind this photo, please click here.

Giap was seven years old when he met Fred. His father had taken him to Hanoi with the hope of restoring his son’s sight. After 25 days they were told there was nothing that the doctors could do.

The day they were due to leave was the day Fred Hollows arrived.

Right away Fred organised surgery for the little boy who was going blind. Six days later Giap was released from hospital with his sight dramatically improved. Six months later Fred passed away.

This image of Fred and young Giap was one of the last, and most powerful, images to capture Fred’s immense passion for his work.


Today Giap is a teacher, and the first in his family to attend university. We’re still in touch with Giap, who says that meeting Fred made him want to be a better man for society.

This image, and this story, always inspires us and keeps us going - as I know Fred would if he was here. He would tell us to roll up our sleeves and get in there. He wouldn’t give up until the job was done.

Fred Hollows met Nepalese ophthalmologist Dr Sanduk Ruit in 1985.

They couldn’t have known where their friendship would lead.

By bringing modern cataract surgical techniques to developing countries like Nepal, together they changed the world.

Fred and Ruit’s friendship and partnership lasted until the very end of Fred’s life. In Fred’s own words, “one of the great joys of my life is having been part of the training of Sanduk Ruit.”

This video tells the story of two mates who did more than just share a vision. They rolled up their sleeves and made their vision a reality.

And no one rolls up their sleeves quite like Dr Ruit. As a surgeon, he’s personally performed more than 120,000 cataract surgeries with his own hands - more than anyone else in the world. That’s the sort of real action you’re a part of, Peter, every time you donate $25 to help restore sight.

Peter, I wanted to share this video with you - it includes some rare interviews with Fred that you may have not seen, and tells the story of two mates who changed the world.

It’s Gabi Hollows here.

Peter, this may be the toughest year any of us have ever faced.

I know that many of our supporters will be going through enormous family challenges, with disruptions to work and uncertainty about the future. I want you to know that I am with you - we will get through this.

Fred used to talk about ‘humanity’ a lot. He believed that the human race was like one big family, and that our similarities were greater than our differences.

This week would have been Fred’s 91st birthday. If he were here today, he wouldn’t want the focus to be on him. But he would be speaking out, louder than ever, with his message of kindness and shared humanity.

Fred’s life’s work was to restore sight. But his dream can be summed up in something he said the year that he passed away:

“I believe that the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other.”

There are many things that are out of our control right now. But we can still control how we treat each other, especially the most vulnerable among us – locally, and around the world, in big and small ways.

I have my own connection that I’d like to share. I’ve been with The Foundation for more than 25 years - in fact, I first met Fred when I was his Secretary at the Prince of Wales Hospital Eye Clinic in 1988.

I remember being in awe of “Prof” as we referred to him then. He was a man who showed empathy to his patients and treated people equally – be they a Member of Parliament or a prisoner from Long Bay jail. Truthfully I was also a bit scared of him at first. He was gruff and to the point, and did not have time for fools. You had to do your job and do it to your best ability. He did not accept any less. I respected Fred’s values and beliefs, and these have carried over to The Fred Hollows Foundation.

I feel honoured to play my part in Fred’s vision of a world where no person in unnecessarily blind. And for everyone, whether rich or poor, to have the right to high quality and affordable eye care.

By sharing these inspiring stories about Fred and the history of The Foundation, we’re passing the torch to others. That’s how we’ll carry on Fred’s vision long into the future. We’d love it if you can share them with your families too, to help keep Fred’s memory alive.

It’s Adam Spencer here. You might know me as an author, comedian, writer, ABC radio host, and maths nerd.

I’m also an Ambassador for The Fred Hollows Foundation, and I wanted to share my story of how that came to be.

I was born with my right eye permanently shut and Fred came up with a surgical procedure to allow my eyelid to open and close naturally. I’m proud to say that it is because of Fred that I can see out of my right eye.

Because of my connection with him, I’ve worked closely with The Fred Hollows Foundation and seen amazing possibilities.

It’s Gabi here. How are you?

I’ve been thinking a lot about you lately. I hope that you, your loved ones, and all our wonderful supporters are doing okay.

Many Australians have had a particularly tough year, but I’ve never been more proud to be an Australian. Watching the extraordinary acts of kindness, and seeing our communities come together has been incredible. Will you do another extraordinary thing by donating to restore sight today?

Back in the 90’s when The Foundation was just starting up, Fred said “I’ve seen some extraordinary demonstrations of generosity by the Australians we’ve been meeting.” The truth is, Australians never stopped being generous, and that generosity has never been more important than it is now.
