Congratulations to Carolyn Drake. Her book, Knit Club, has been shortlisted by the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation for PhotoBook of the Year.

We feel incredibly honored to have collaborated with Carolyn on this uniquely special project.

Ken Light's stunning grouping of photographs and José Ángel Navejas' first hand, compelling memoir, presented in both English and Spanish, offer testimony of the harrowing night border crossing of those desperately seeking a chance at a better life.

On Wednesday, October 28th at 12:00 p.m. Ken and José will discuss the book in a live-streamed conversation hosted by the Townsend Center for the Humanities at University of California, Berkeley. Watch it live or view it later, here.

KEN LIGHT | MIDNIGHT LA FRONTERA

Between 1983 and 1987 along the California/Mexico border, Ken Light took his Hasselblad camera and flash and rode along with US Border Patrol agents in the middle of the night as they combed the Otay Mesa looking for "illegal aliens." He was there when they were apprehended – captured by authorities as well as the photographer''s flash. The black and white images are stark, impromptu mug shots in the desert, taken at a moment of extreme vulnerability, when hope gave way to despair, migrants caught in a cruel game of hide and seek.

A foreboding meditation in the vein of Southern Gothic literature, Drake developed this body while working in collaboration with an enigmatic group of women loosely calling themselves "Knit Club." The nature of the club is ambiguous. It is a cross between a gang, a cult of mysteries, and a group of friends bound by secrets only they share.
