Virtual Panel on the Future of Infectious Disease Product Development and Pandemic Response

As the world grapples with COVID-19, TB Alliance is convening a virtual panel session to reflect on lessons learned from 20 years of infectious disease drug development and to solicit insights from esteemed global health experts on the front lines of public health management, funding, and policy.

Discussion: Accelerating Innovation to Prepare for and Respond to Pandemics 

What products and approaches are needed to effectively prepare for and respond to pandemics, and how can we summon the necessary funding and political will?

This discussion will focus on how to shape durable approaches that enable local, national, and global institutions to manage infectious disease outbreaks effectively and rapidly. Beyond an emergency response, this includes developing the diagnostics, drugs, vaccines, and public health management tools needed to find, treat, and prevent health threats.

The World Health Organization's Global Tuberculosis (TB) Report 2020 confirms that efforts to track and treat TB worldwide continued to trend in a positive direction during 2019. However, these tentative, hard-won gains face the prospect of a dramatic reversal due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Stop TB Partnership Working Group on New Drugs' Annual Meeting is a neutral forum bringing together those working in research and development to get a full understanding of the progress, challenges, and critical issues to developing TB treatments. The 2020 WGND Annual Meeting is taking place on Monday, 19 October at 9AM-12PM ET. Oral Abstract Presentation:

Pretomanid added to bedaquiline and linezolid for patients with extensively-drug resistant TB and multidrug-resistant TB treatment failure or intolerance: a comparison of prospective cohorts

Suzette Oelofse, MD, University of Cape Town, will present findings on how the Phase 3 Nix-TB clinical trial-which evaluated a new treatment regimen for people with XDR-TB or treatment-intolerant or non-responsive MDR-TB-compared to a prospectively recruited XDR-TB cohort. This virtual Oral Abstract Session will be on Channel 7. Please see the online programme for additional details. 

TB Alliance will announce a new initiative called LIFT-TB (Leveraging Innovation for Faster Treatment of Tuberculosis) on 21 October at 1PM CEST. The launch event will focus on a new initiative to support rapid introduction of new TB therapies. The event will feature critical voices in the field of TB, with insights into scaling up drug-resistant TB interventions, and include stakeholders from the donor country, the WHO and TB programs from high burden countries.

The discussion will be moderated by Saurabh Rane, MD, activist and TB survivor, and will be held as a Zoom webinar. This event will take place during the virtual Union World Conference on Lung Health.

TB Alliance is convening its annual Stakeholders Association (SHA) meeting as a virtual event this year. The annual meeting will be Thursday, November 19 at 8:30AM ET. 

Nick Herbert (Lord Herbert of South Downs), Chair of the Global TB Caucus and Chair of the Global Equality Caucus, will be a keynote speaker. A panel discussion moderated by Mitchell Warren, President of the TB Alliance SHA and Executive Director of AVAC, will focus on the impacts of COVID-19 on TB treatment and management, with speakers including Francesca Conradie, MD, Primary Investigator of the Nix-TB Clinical Trial, and Nestani Tukvadze, MD, Head of the Research Unit at the National Center for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, Georgia.

TB Alliance Announces European Commission Authorisation of New Treatment for Highly Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis

Pretomanid, developed by the non-profit TB Alliance, has received EU marketing authorisation in combination regimen with bedaquiline and linezolid in adults with XDR-TB or treatment-intolerant/non-responsive MDR-TB

PRETORIA (3 August 2020)-Pretomanid, a novel compound developed by the non-profit organization TB Alliance, has been granted a conditional marketing authorisation by the European Commission (EC) for treating highly drug-resistant forms of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB).¹ The new drug was authorised as part of a three-drug, six month, all-oral regimen for the treatment of adults with extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) or multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) who are treatment-intolerant or non-responsive.¹

"This regimen provides a new treatment option for patients in the European Union with highly drug-resistant TB infections," said Mel Spigelman, MD, President and CEO of TB Alliance.

TB Alliance Announces Initiative to Broaden Adoption and Scale Up of New Treatments for Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (TB) with Support from Republic of Korea 

This initiative, known as LIFT-TB (Leveraging Innovation for Faster Treatment of Tuberculosis) will also seek to increase treatment completion rates for drug-resistant forms of TB in some of the countries most affected by this form of TB across the Southeast and Central Asian regions, namely Indonesia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Global Health Leaders Chart the Path Forward in Pandemic Response

Leading voices in global health innovation and pandemic preparedness and response shared insight into enabling the rapid innovation and collaboration required to tackle the world's most threatening pandemics, including COVID-19, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and malaria. These discussions took place at Fighting Pandemics | 2020 and Beyond, a virtual forum organized by TB Alliance.

The event was moderated by The Wall Street Journal Senior Writer, Betsy McKay and featured Dr. Anthony Fauci, M.D., Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, M.D., Chief Scientist, World Health Organization, and Dr. Ariel Pablos-M?ndez, Professor of Medicine, Columbia University and Founding Board Member, TB Alliance.

DCGI Approves Treatment for Highly Drug-Resistant Forms of Tuberculosis

The Drug Controller General of India has approved TB Alliance''s anti-tuberculosis drug for conditional access under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program, making India the second country in the world to provide a national regulatory approval for this product. The approval was secured by Mylan, TB Alliance''s global commercialization partner.

TB Alliance was nominated for a Prix Galien award for "Best Pharmaceutical Agent" for the development of a new treatment for highly drug-resistant forms of TB.

Commemorating 20 Years of TB Alliance

Today marks the 20th Anniversary of the incorporation of TB Alliance. It was founded after leaders in global health gathered in Cape Town to respond to the increasing TB burden, which they described as "a blot on the consciousness of human kind."
