We''re pleased to announce TARGA High Country 2020 and TARGA Tasmania 2021 entries are both now open! 

We know it''s been a tough few months without any TARGA action and the team are working hard to ensure TARGA returns even bigger on the other side. We are very excited about opening entries for both of these events after months of preparation. 

Don''t forget to take advantage of the early bird entry option, which closes August 14th, 2020. 

Plus, good news for those entering TARGA Tasmania, the fully paid entry option is back by popular demand and discounted more than ever! Meaning if you enter and pay in full prior to August 14th, you can enjoy a substantial discount. 

TARGA customers are showing great optimism in TARGA Great Barrier Reef as the entries keep rolling in!

Whilst we all await updates on what our state governments will do next in relation to the easing of restrictions, even the latest advice in Queensland of a September 1 opening would not see the cancellation of TARGA Great Barrier Reef. 

In fact, this would present us a unique proposition of being the first major event to be held in the state after the borders open, meaning some fantastic national media coverage for TARGA and all those involved.

Naturally, our preferred option is for an earlier opening and we will continue to monitor the situation with a planned final decision to be made by 30th June.

During these incredibly uncertain times, it is important that TARGA’s loyal customers are reassured we are in this together. Before the COVID pandemic hit, TARGA had the enviable reputation of NEVER cancelling an event in its 28 year history meaning competitors could always enter a TARGA event with 110% confidence that it would proceed.  COVID has changed that for now and the restrictions in place are beyond the control of TARGA.

With TARGA Great Barrier Reef not 100% guaranteed to happen this year, we feel it is important our customers have some clarity in the situation if TARGA was forced to cancel this year’s event. If this does occur, all competitors entered prior to June 30 will be entitled to receive a full refund of their entry fees paid to date.  So, rest assured, if you’re thinking about entering TARGA Great Barrier Reef this year, we have your back under the following special condition;

• Any entrant in TARGA Great Barrier Reef 2020 who chooses to withdraw from this event no later than 5:00pm on July 3rd 2020, will be entitled to receive a full refund of entry fees paid to this date or a full transfer to the 2021 TARGA Great Barrier Reef without penalty.  All withdrawals must be sent in writing to Megan at megan@targa.com.au and refunds will be processed and paid to the entrants chosen account within 14 days of application.

Many will recall the original version of the Motorsport Australia TARGA Championship traditionally finished at TARGA Tasmania. Due to the cancellation of this years TARGA Tasmania, it gave us an opportunity to assess the viability of a return to a format that would see the final round at TARGA Tasmania again.

We are happy and excited to advise this has now been approved by Motorsport Australia and will mean a return to three rounds with TARGA Great Barrier Reef being first cab off the rank in September, followed by TARGA High Country from 13 to 15 November and TARGA Tasmania from 19 to 24 April 2021.  The champions of the various competitions on offer will be called the 2021 Motorsport Australia TARGA Champions and so on in the years following.  There will be no 2020 champions.

The 2021 champions will be recognised and presented their awards at the TARGA Tasmania Presentation Dinner in a more appropriate setting.  Along with this, the Outright winners in Modern and Classic will again be invited to the Motorsport Australia Awards Gala Dinner in February 2022 to collect their National Champions awards alongside the champions of other major championships such as the Virgin Australia Supercars and the Australian Rally Championship.

All other rules and the points system will remain the same.

After a successful third running of TARGA Great Barrier Reef, we were excited to return home to the news of a new deal to host the event for another 3 years, which will see us return to Tropical North Queensland from 2021-2023. 

The Queensland Government and Cairns Regional Council have been welcoming hosts over the last three years and agree the event has a big future!

Despite the impact of COVID-19, we were able to deliver a successful event in Cairns at the start of the month with great support from the local volunteers and from our Queensland competitor base, and we even had a few from interstate go into quarantine just to make it to the start line!

After a slight restructure of the event and the associated activities we managed to pull off a COVID-compliant event warmly received by the competitors and the community and is an event that will definitely go down in the history books! 

As we were unable to run the highly successful TARGAFest on The Esplanade, we decided to take the cars to the people instead with the 27-kilometre TARGAcavalcade through the suburbs and the city.

That innovation has received rave reviews, so we will certainly look to keep it in place for the future as well as hopefully bringing TARGAfest back in 2021.

We''re thrilled to be returning to Queensland in 2021 and hope to see the rest of our competitors able to attend next year as we promise to offer even more surprises and exciting course additions.

Last week we announced TARGA Great Barrier Reef 2020 will still continue even if that means some people are now unable to attend due to the recent announcements from Queensland in relation to Victoria, Sydney and ACT. 

We feel sincerely sorry for those who cannot attend the event at this point in time and hope that the situation changes to enable attendance.  We encourage those of you to explore your exemption options online as a number of sports people have been given exemptions in recent weeks to compete in their chosen sport in Queensland.

However, it is important we put on TARGA Great Barrier Reef for the many people who can still attend, including the more than 80 Queensland based entries and do all we can to ensure the events success.

In saying that, if you have been waiting to enter and don''t live in one of the determined "hot spots", this Friday the 7th of August is your last chance to enter TARGA Great Barrier Reef 2020. Don''t miss TARGA back in action and enter below.  

Whilst the COVID pandemic has meant that many events and large gatherings haven''t been able to proceed, TARGA has been looking at ways to ensure that the people of Cairns still have a great opportunity to see the TARGA cars close up!

Called the TARGAcavalcade, cars will travel a set route through Cairns on Saturday 5th September to take TARGA to the people. 

The 27 kilometre route has been designed to ensure that a number of suburbs are included in TARGA Great Barrier Reef for the first time with the route starting in Edmonton and heading north before finally finishing at the Showgrounds.  

The introduction of the TARGAcavalacade will take TARGA to the people and avoid the mass gathering issues associated with holding TARGAfest on The Esplanade.  This will ensure that the residents of Cairns and car lovers from across the region will still get to see the TARGA cars close up.  It will be a fantastic day for families to get together and enjoy a brand new free event in Cairns.

For the first time at TARGA High Country last year, we were able to celebrate some especially important milestones with those competitors who completed all 10 years of the event. 

This year we will again celebrate those people who will have completed their 10th TARGA High Country in 2020. 

In honour of traditions held at TARGA, we will commemorate those 10 year competitors with a newly designed 10 year TARGA High Country pin, presented to them at the event,  including those who missed receiving the pin last year.

If you are eligible for your 10 year pin, you would have received a letter in the mail. If you believe you should be eligible and haven''t received a letter, please email Megan.

After the stunning success of running TARGA Great Barrier Reef last month in spite of the current COVID-19 restrictions, we have remained extremely hopeful of being able to run TARGA High Country in mid-November.  Unfortunately, Victoria is in a different situation to Queensland at the moment and with still uncertain signs on the horizon; along with a clear window of opportunity to simply move the event dates; we have today taken the decision to postpone the running of the 11th TARGA High Country to 5 to 7 February 2021.

Even though Victoria may be re-opened by mid-November, it is clear already that most other states will continue to insist on 14 days of quarantining for anyone who visits Victoria from another state, which severely hinders a number of people from attending this event.  In moving the date back, not weeks but months, it will give us the best opportunity to ensure that TARGA High Country will be as big as it has been over a number of years with more than 150 cars turning up to compete and another 50 enjoying the TARGA Tour experience.

Thank you to the many customers who have reached out since TARGA Great Barrier Reef to acknowledge our `against the odds’ delivery of our Cairns based event and if we had the same level of confidence in the COVID situation in Victoria, we would continue to push ahead with our plans.  The reality of greater confidence coming in 2021; which in turn will hopefully see more competitors able to attend; has made the decision at this point to postpone the event an obvious one.

With the event now pushed back a few months, we will re-open Early Bird entries until Midnight this Friday 9 October. Be sure to grab the discount this week, simply by entering and paying your deposit.  Entries will now close on 15 January 2021.

We sincerely appreciate your ongoing support in what has been a very unique year for everyone.  A year that for TARGA has seen a cancellation, a successful running and now a postponement in the ever-changing landscape of COVID restrictions and border closures.

What an extraordinarily challenging time we are all going through right now. We hope our TARGA family are staying safe and looking after themselves in these unprecedented times. 

It’s unimaginable to be forced into the position to cancel such a huge event, but we wanted to try and share some happiness among our loyal customer base with something to look forward to when this is all over!

The TARGA team have already been hard at work preparing for next year’s event, which will finally see the longest competition course in the events history roll out.  We are excited to announce that the course will remain the same, with the only exception being Isandula, which will now run at its original length of 7.78km due to road works being completed in time for next year.

In light of the recent and unfortunate turn of events, next year’s 29th running promises to be a big one! So be sure to either
re-book everything now or book as early as you can.

The 2021 event will be run from 19th to 24th April and new entries will open earlier than ever on Monday 4th May at 9.00am.

This year’s championship will now be contested over the remaining two events at TARGA Great Barrier Reef and TARGA High Country with both events on track to run as normal.

Following the Premier of Queensland''s announcement yesterday that borders will open to domestic travel from July 10, we are very excited to be able to continue the planning work that will lead us all to the 3rd running of TARGA Great Barrier Reef from the 4th to 6th September. 

In saying that, we share the concerns of our many Victorian based competitors who are currently exempt from travelling to the state. However, two months is a long time this year and we will continue to monitor this situation and hope they can join us in Cairns come September.

This year''s event will have to see some changes, with many of these actually streamlining the pre-event process, leaving you more time to complete your recce or simply get out and see the amazing scenery of Tropical North Queensland.  We are working tirelessly on our COVID safe plan and aim to have this to all competitors and tour participants in the weeks ahead.

Drew Dundas, had officiated at the last two TARGA Great Barrier Reef events and decided after two years it was time for him to get behind the wheel!

Competing in his 2012 Lotus Elise, Drew persuaded his mate Michael Kupfer to join him in the TSD category at TARGA Great Barrier Reef last month.

Drew has written a great story all about his first ever TARGA experience for Lotus Notes, the Official Magazine of Lotus Club Victoria and Lotus Club Queensland.

With the much anticipated and long awaited news about Melbourne reopening, we look towards our next event, TARGA High Country, which has shifted from its traditional early November date to February 5-7, 2021. 

The 11th running of TARGA High Country will now provide a great lead-up to TARGA Tasmania in April 2021, especially for those who haven''t been able to get in a tarmac rally car all year!

With things projected to open even more by February, we anticipate TARGA High Country to be one massive event with so many of the front runners and all of our favourite manufacturers already entering!

Defying the odds to safely and successfully run the third TARGA Great Barrier Reef, TARGA injected Cairns with much needed business and entertainment, therefore giving the tourism-ravaged region a much needed boost.

As we all know, TARGA Tasmania is steeped in history, and as a part of these traditions, at every anniversary event we award a special anniversary TARGA trophy in conjunction with any normal TARGA trophy that a competitor is eligible for.

To be eligible for this one off, bespoke special anniversary plate, you will need to have won a TARGA trophy in 2019 and again in 2021 and then again finally in 2022. The special anniversary TARGA trophy is equivalent to winning a Golden TARGA Trophy.

Letters have been sent to any competitor who is currently eligible but has not yet entered the 2021 event, so if you think you may be eligible but have not received a letter, please contact Megan at megan@targa.com.au and she can assist you with more information.

After careful consideration for the health and welfare of everyone involved in TARGA Tasmania, but more importantly, the 500,000 plus people who call Tasmania home, we announce the cancellation of this year’s TARGA Tasmania, which was due to be held from 27th April to 2nd May. 

Given the uniqueness of TARGA, an event which visits all corners of the island, we felt that the health risk to the Tasmanian community of conducting our iconic rally was simply too great based on sound advice from a number of experts. 

Whilst it is sad news that for the first time in its history, dating back to 1992, TARGA Tasmania will not be run, we are already focusing on the future and staging the 29th edition of TARGA Tasmania in 2021 followed by the 30th Anniversary event, which will now be held in 2022.

After ten highly successful years of running the country’s second largest tarmac rally, we felt now was the best time to shake it up a little, especially after the torrid year we have all had.

The finish of TARGA High Country will take on a different look in 2020, with the event podium festivities moved to Mansfield immediately following the street stage through the town on the Sunday afternoon.

The event, which will run a week later this year from November 13 to 15, still includes two runs up the famous Mt Buller road, but these are now placed as the final stage on both Friday and Saturday.

Friday is the shortest day with just two stages, in line with a later start, which will see a twilight run down from Mt Buller on a lengthened Mirimbah Stage, then a return run all the way to the alpine village.  In total, the competition course remains the same at over 260 kilometres, but a later start Friday, combined with COVID related pre-event changes, means that competitors can arrive as late as lunch time Friday and utilise the extra time to complete more recce or better still, just get out and see more of the beautiful High Country region.

Saturday takes the field out to Whitfield and then back to Mt Buller, before the Sunday run out to Eildon, with the final stage a four-kilometre blast around Mansfield itself.

We felt it was time to give the people of Mansfield and its surrounds; who have been such great supporters and welcoming hosts across the years; the opportunity to see the excitement of the finish, complete with the traditional champagne shower adding a new feature to the annual TARGAfest in Mansfield.

We''re excited to announce the 2020 TARGA Great Barrier Reef entries are now open alongside a bigger and better course!

The 2020 provisional course boasts a 25% increase up on 2019 with an additional 45 competitive kilometres included, plus four brand new stages, making it 20 stages in total!

The biggest route change will see multiple stages run in the Cassowary Coast region, approximately 100km to the south of the event''s base in Cairns. 

This inclusion adds an exciting new dimension to TARGA Great Barrier Reef with the area''s stunning topography and unique reef location!

For those of you planning to get out on the course and watch TARGA Tasmania this year, we have compiled a list of the best stages to view all of the action in the 2020 TARGA Tasmania Spectator Guide.

There are a number of fantastic locations to watch this year''s event and we suggest taking some time before the day to read the guide and go and scout out your favourite spot/s on each stage. 

TARGA Tasmania’s 30th anniversary event will mark a new time slot in the sporting calendar with the event to move to a regular date in early March each year.

The 29th running of the event, now to be held in 2021, will remain with the traditional post-Easter dates of April 19 to 24, before swapping to the March dates the following year for the major 30th anniversary event.

The event will now have a permanent home the week leading into the March Eight Hour Day long weekend with the F1 round the week after and the Supercars due in the state in the weeks after that.

The event will also return to its traditional Tuesday to Sunday format, rather than Monday to Saturday, allowing more opportunities for Tasmanian fans to access the cars in action over the final weekend. The Monday following the event will be the public holiday providing an additional economic boost to the state.

The dates for the 30th Anniversary and beyond have been set as:

*   8 to 13 March 2022 (30th Anniversary)
*   7 to 12 March 2023
*   5 to 10 March 2024
*   4 to 9 March 2025
*   3 to 8 March 2026
*   2 to 7 March 2027 (35th Anniversary)

Continuing the exciting news, TARGA High Country based on Mt Buller and in Mansfield will also change it''s date to what we hope might bring us a little more sun and a little less snow. Yes, it is meant to be a summer event after all!

TARGA High Country will now run from November 13 to 15 in 2020, a week later than originally scheduled. With dates confirmed until 2022:

*   11 to 13 November 2022

The new 12 hectare dedicated site will include a purpose designed passenger terminal building, a passenger vehicle marshalling area for 600 cars, more efficient passenger vehicle check in, security facilities, public amenities, a cafe, children’s play area and a pet exercise area.

TT-Line Chairman Michael Grainger said the move to Geelong provided the company with a unique opportunity to enhance the passenger experience and provide room to expand its freight offering in line with demand for many years to come.

As the situation around COVID-19 continues to unfold around us, we are hopeful the new social distancing measures put in place by the Government will reduce the spread of the virus and help flatten the curve, so we can reopen our borders as soon as possible.

In the last week, we have spoken with the Queensland Government, Cairns Council and our loyal competitors to determine whether pushing the event date back by a couple of months would be beneficial given the current climate, but the overwhelming support was to leave the date in September. 

With this in mind, we will continue to move forward with the scheduled September dates whilst regularly reviewing the situation in relation to government instructions/regulations as it progresses.

And with that, we would love to offer an EXTENSION on our EARLY BIRD rates until Friday, May 15th to give you the chance to enter at a great rate.
