HURRY: We only have one week left before Congress leaves for the year. Sign now and urge your members of Congress to protect public lands!

This week marks two years since the tragic decision to dramatically shrink two of our country’s most iconic National Monuments — Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante, located in Utah.

Samuel, I know you care about Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments as much as I do, which is why I need to ask you for help during this urgent time. Please sign this petition now to ensure the remaining National Monument lands are protected from destructive development and abuse.

Since that disheartening day two years ago, the Bureau of Land Management has developed plans to allow harmful resource extraction and off-road vehicle abuse for areas still protected under National Monument status. At the same time, the public lands carved out of the former National Monuments — such as the ancient Sand Island Petroglyph Panel in former Bears Ears (pictured below) — are now completely unprotected.

TAKE ACTION NOW

We should never have to fear attacks on our public lands — they should be preserved for generations to come. Yet, precious archeological and sacred sites in Utah are now at risk of looting and desecration, in addition to threats of drilling and mining by private corporations. With your help, we are working hard to pass legislation in Congress that would protect these special landscapes, but we only have a few days left to get Congress to act before they adjourn for the year.

Samuel, your help is needed to protect our National Monuments. Take action now and urge your members of Congress to support the Bears Ears Expansion and Respect for Sovereignty Act, and the Antiquities Act of 2019 today.

The Bears Ears Expansion and Respect for Sovereignty Act (H.R. 871) proposes to expand Bears Ears to 1.9 million acres — restoring and adding protections for over 100,000 archeological and cultural sites that are currently at risk.

The Antiquities Act of 2019 (S. 367 and H.R. 1050) would protect National Monuments designated or expanded since 1996 and ensure that presidents cannot cut back or eliminate these special places without congressional approval.

National Monument lands are our lands, and we must see to it that they are protected for generations to come. Please sign now to help pass these bills to minimize long-term consequences for our National Monument landscapes.

As odd as it may sound, we need your help now to protect public lands and open spaces all across the country next November.

In towns and cities, counties, and states across America, people will be voting on ballot measures to provide funding for everything from wildlife habitats to recreational areas and to urban parks.

Our track record speaks for itself. Last year, Americans approved 24 ballot measures — an Amendment to the Texas State Constitution; a bond issue in Portland, Oregon; and a property tax levy in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to name just three — that generated over $4.4 billion for parks and conservation in 14 different states.

Conservation is a non-partisan issue that people of all political stripes care about deeply.

Since 1996, The Trust for Public Land has helped everyday advocates raise over $79 billion in conservation funding. We will be out there again from now until next November, promoting measures for everything from playground renovations and trail-building, to establishing community forests and safeguarding clean air and water.

As the end of the year approaches, I’d like to take a moment to describe just a few of the projects that our members and supporters helped us bring to completion in 2019.

Trinity Divide, California — We protected 17 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail at Trinity Divide in Northern California, closing one of the largest gaps in public ownership along the trail.
Ca�on Ciruela Ranch, New Mexico — We purchased 8,947 acres and will donate it to the Bureau of Land Management. It will greatly improve access to the Sabinoso Wilderness, which has a history of very limited access due to surrounding private property.
Palmisano Park, Illinois — We installed a set of public climbing boulders in the western end of this Chicago park. The boulders create a new attraction in the 10-year-old park for the local community to enjoy.
Catamount Community Forest, Vermont — We permanently conserved this 393-acre recreational, historic, and ecological gem located in one of Vermont’s fastest growing and most threatened regions.

Of course, we still have a huge number of projects already underway that we will continue to work on in 2020 — projects in Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Tennessee, Georgia, Illinois, Texas, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Hawai’i — and new ones starting up all the time.

I am very much looking forward to watching our programs advance in 2020, and I would like to invite you to be a part of these future successes by joining The Trust for Public Land today.

The purpose of the State of the Union address is to talk about the most important issues facing our nation, and the President’s proposed solutions to those problems. In the past year, we’ve seen the climate crisis evolve in ways we could never have imagined. Yet, President Trump failed to mention even one word about our changing climate in his address to us yesterday. Call on Congress to fight back on climate now!

Ignoring one of the most important issues facing our country — and the world — is fundamentally flawed. Without urgent action from our nation’s leaders, we undoubtedly face a future of even more rising sea levels, habitat extinction, and extreme weather akin to the rampant wildfires in California and Australia.

We were devastated when, two years ago tomorrow, President Trump eliminated 85% of Bears Ears and nearly half of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments.

And then, just this past fall, the administration released management plans that confirmed our worst fears — they plan to open up what’s left of these irreplaceable places to drilling and mining.

These attacks will have monumental consequences for public lands. Tens of thousands of archeological sites, Native American sacred sites, and recreational lands are at risk of irreversible damage and harmful resource extraction.

These plans are unacceptable, and will go into effect soon. We must stop the administration from handing over the remaining portions of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments to private corporations to pillage for their own benefit.

TAKE ACTION NOW

We cannot allow the Trump administration to sell off Bears Ears or Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments to the highest bidder. That’s why we’re working to build support for two bills — the Bears Ears Expansion and Respect for Sovereignty Act (H.R. 871) and the Antiquities Act (S. 367 and H.R. 1050) — that will help us fight back against these outrageous attacks.

The Bears Ears Expansion and Respect for Sovereignty Act will bar the administration from placing these public lands in the hands of corporations, expand the monument to 1.9 million acres, and restore protections for over 100,000 archeological and cultural sites currently at risk.

The Antiquities Act will not only protect National Monuments designated or expanded since 1996, but also states that presidents cannot revoke or cut-back these precious lands without congressional approval.

Allowing any part of these lands to fall into the wrong hands will do irreversible damage to Utah’s iconic landscape. With Congress back in session, we need to get them back on track to pass these bills. Urge your members of Congress to support these National Monument bills now!

We don’t have a moment to waste. The administration’s management plans will go into effect soon. We need all of our supporters and activists to show support for these bills. Samuel, please urge your members of Congress to make the Bears Ears Expansion and Respect for Sovereignty Act and the Antiquities Act bills priorities today!

Thanks to our dedicated members and supporters, a tremendous milestone has been achieved: The iconic Zion Narrows Trail — every foot of it — is now safe from development and open to the public … forever!

That’s not to say that our work in and around Zion National Park is complete. We have a lot more to do, and we need your help to do it. But first I want to tell you about our recent success.

A large stretch of the trail is actually outside of the park. Most of that exterior portion passes through protected land. But a section of the trail, just before it enters Zion National Park, crossed through a privately owned parcel called Simon Gulch.

Thanks to a lot of hard work and the support of our members, all 880 acres of Simon Gulch are now protected with a conservation easement, which guarantees permanent public access to the last at-risk section of the Narrows Trail.

As I said, our work here is far from over. Roughly 3,000 acres inside Zion National Park itself are privately owned. All across the country, approximately 2.6 million acres of private or state-owned land sits inside the borders of our National Park System.

Samuel, you understand the importance of our mission to protect land and create parks for people. Now I’m asking you to help support that mission. I need you to become a member of The Trust for Public Land and support our efforts to protect land in Zion, in all our national parks, and all across the country.

Zion Narrows Trail came by its name honestly. Its route follows the Virgin River into a deep slot canyon with sculpted sandstone walls soaring more than a thousand feet overhead. And for much of the 16-mile trek, the canyon is so narrow that hikers have nowhere to walk but in the rocky streambed itself.

All of us at The Trust for Public Land have worked hard to keep the Zion Narrows Trail open and accessible to future generations of park lovers. I hope I can count on you to help us protect and preserve other public lands as well.

Yesterday, President Trump released his budget to Congress for 2021. And I have some bad news.

For a second year in a row, his budget includes virtually no funding for America’s most critical conservation program — the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). Instead, he is diverting the funds that are rightfully set aside for public lands to other sources.

The LWCF has been essential to the protection of more than 45,000 parks and green spaces across the country. Virtually eliminating funding for this program is unacceptable. If this budget is approved by Congress, the result will be devastating for public lands across the nation.

Samuel, we need you to take action now: Tell Congress to ignore this proposed budget, and to pass a budget that helps, not hurts, the environment!

As a supporter of The Trust for Public Land, you know how important the Land and Water Conservation Fund is to protecting and preserving our nation’s public lands. This is the time for Congress to provide full and dedicated funding for the LWCF, not roll back the program’s funding! Together with your help, we are working to combat this threat in two major ways:

Mobilizing grassroots support to urge Congress to pass a budget that’s good for the environment

The single most important source of land-preservation funding could be severely shortchanged, and we need your steadfast help to convince Congress to provide all the funds that it is entitled to.

Ever since it was established in 1964, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has been the lifeblood for parks and open space. It has directly benefitted more than 45,000 project sites in all 50 states, from conserving land on the Appalachian Trail to reinvigorating a community park in East Wenatchee, Washington.

Last week, President Trump submitted his proposed 2021 budget to Congress. Our worst fears were realized when we learned that funding for the LWCF was virtually eliminated in his budget.

Samuel, a bill has been introduced in Congress to mandate full funding of the LWCF at $900 million per year. Unfortunately, that bill has been languishing with the Senate Natural Resources Committee. We need your help to get it out of committee, onto the Senate floor, and voted into law.

We really aren’t asking for very much. In one sense, $900 million is simply the amount Congress said the LWCF could have back when it created the Fund in 1964. But in another sense, it’s much, much less. Consider this: $900 million in 1964 dollars would be roughly seven and a half billion dollars today.

We’re not asking for $7.5 billion. We’re simply asking that the LWCF be given the full amount that was promised in 1964: $900 million. If you think that’s not too much to ask … if you think this indispensable conservation resource should be fully funded … if you think parks and recreation areas and wilderness are important … then join us on the frontline and join The Trust for Public Land by making a monthly commitment right away.

P.S. I forgot to mention that the LWCF takes absolutely no taxpayer money. The funding comes from royalties paid by the oil and natural gas industries. In other words, money earned from the exploitation of certain natural resources is used to protect and preserve other natural resources. Those royalties are being paid every year; we want to ensure that the LWCF and our public lands gets what they’re due. That’s why I need you to make that donation right now in support of this and all our vital work.

Blasting has begun in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in southern Arizona, as contractors for U.S. Customs and Border Patrol clear sections of the precious landscape for a fortified section of border wall.

Our national monuments are the pride of the nation and we cannot stand by and watch as the Trump administration moves to destroy Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Take action now and demand Congress act to stop the destruction of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument!

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, a designation conferred in 1976 to honor the land’s outstanding ecological value. This destruction undermines that very concept, and will have harmful consequences for Organ Pipe’s fragile landscape. Construction of the border wall has already ripped up 100 cacti, including 76 iconic saguaros that are found only in the Sonoran Desert and normally live 200 years, or more!

Organ Pipe is also home to cultural sites and grounds sacred to the Tohono O’odham people, who are among many Indigenous nations who trace their ancestry to lands protected by the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

Some places are too precious to dynamite, dig up, or destroy; and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is one of them. We cannot lose this incredible and irreplaceable place. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is at risk of irreversible destruction, but with your help, we can beat back this attack by taking the fight head-on in Congress.

Take action right now to stand up to the destruction of Organ Pipe so the National Monument is not subject to dynamite blasting and destruction.

Ever since it was established in 1964, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has been the lifeblood for parks and open space. It has directly benefitted more than 45,000 project sites in all 50 states, from conserving land on the Appalachian Trail to reinvigorating a community park in East Wenatchee, Washington.

The week before last, President Trump submitted his proposed 2021 budget to Congress. Our worst fears were realized when we learned that funding for the LWCF was virtually eliminated in his budget.

Samuel, a bill has been introduced in Congress to mandate full funding of the LWCF at $900 million per year. This legislation could counter the funding shortfall in the President’s budget. We need your help to get it out of committee, onto the Senate floor, and voted into law.

We really aren’t asking for very much. In one sense, $900 million is simply the amount Congress said the LWCF could have back when it created the Fund in 1964. But in another sense, it’s much, much less. Consider this: $900 million in 1964 dollars would be roughly seven and a half billion dollars today.

But we’re not asking for $7.5 billion. We’re simply asking that the LWCF be given the full amount that was promised in 1964: $900 million. If you think that’s not too much to ask … if you think this indispensable conservation resource should be fully funded … if you think parks and recreation areas and wilderness are important … then join us on the frontline and join The Trust for Public Land right away to help fight for conservation funding and so much more.

P.S. I forgot to mention that the LWCF takes absolutely no taxpayer money. The funding comes from royalties paid by the oil and gas industries. In other words, money earned from the exploitation of certain natural resources is used to protect and preserve other natural resources. Those royalties are being paid every year; we want to ensure that the LWCF and our public lands gets what they’re due. As so many of our communities have been and are being transformed in new and unexpected ways, I’d like to talk instead about the positive ways that The Trust for Public Land is transforming communities and accomplishing our goal to protect one million acres of land in the next five years.

First, though, I just want to remind you that the offer to match your donation two to one is about to expire. I hope you won’t let such an unusual opportunity slip away.

When railroads were being extended through the western part of the country, the federal government divided the land up into square mile parcels, granted every other one to the railroad companies, and kept the remaining parcels as public land. Timber companies eventually acquired much of the private land, creating a checkerboard pattern of alternating private and public land.

One unique “checkerboard” example spread across what is known as the Crown of the Continent ecosystem — the largest intact ecosystem in the United States. Within its 10 million-acre embrace lie Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, and the headwaters of three of North America’s great rivers. The list of plant and animal species living here has remained unchanged since the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

To safeguard this unique habitat from fragmentation, The Trust for Public Land and our partners are transforming these checkerboard lands by purchasing and protecting the privately held squares to create an uninterrupted network of conserved lands. The result will be permanent protection of lush forests, open meadows, and glacier-capped peaks across western Montana. We’ve had many successes in recent years, including 300,000 acres of former timber holdings through the internationally recognized Montana Legacy Project. But we still have a long way to go.

We are protecting and preserving these lands for posterity, so that our grandchildren’s grandchildren will have access to its awe-inspiring beauty and its connection with our nation’s history. Your tax-deductible gift will help us reach our goals here and across the country.

Have you heard the latest news in our fight for public lands?

This is how much the Administration’s proposed 2021 budget has allocated to the Land and Water Conservation Fund:

ALMOST $0

Oil and gas companies pay $900 million in royalties into this fund every year, and all of that money is supposed to be used to protect our nation''s most iconic landscapes and expand access to outdoor recreation.

Unfortunately, politicians have been able to take some of that $900 million and divert it to other purposes. But never in the 56 years of the LWCF’s existence has almost all of the $900 million been taken away, leaving only less than 2%.

But the threat to public lands doesn’t stop there. The Trump administration has opened the iconic Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments to drilling and mining, while blasting away in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, causing possibly irreversible damage to this UNESCO biosphere.

Samuel, we’re mobilizing all our resources to get Congress to act and protect public lands.

Make Kingfield Community Forest a Reality

Dear Samuel,

I’m writing today because during these uncertain times, when so many of us are physically isolated, I believe it’s more important than ever that we stay connected. I want you to know that all of us at The Trust of Public Land are fully focused on the vital work that you and I both care about so much.

And I have an important update. The funding deadline for the Kingfield Community Forest project is looming ever nearer. And we need to act now.

Here’s a quick recap of our opportunity:

Shiloh Pond and the 215 acres of Maine woodland that surround it have provided the Town of Kingfield with recreation opportunities, as well as community and social cohesion, for generations.
Last year, the family that has owned the property for 200 years decided to sell, and they listed it with an agent.
We are negotiating an agreement with the owners to purchase the land with the goal of turning it over to the town … but we need to raise an additional $200,000 before the closing, which is in less than 90 days.
If we succeed, the people of Kingfield will have preserved a local treasure. The success of this project will expand and diversify local recreational opportunities, protect critical brook trout habitat, and empower the community through local ownership and management of the land.
If we fail, the land will surely be sold to a developer and broken up into small lots to be used for vacation home development. Paved roads and houses will be built, and the only people who will have access to the pond will be the lucky few who bought lots on its shore.

Samuel, we are making an all-out effort to raise that money, and we’re starting with our most committed and dependable supporters. We need 100 of you to step up and contribute $35 each, or whatever you can afford. If we can get $6,000 by the end of this month, we’ll be well on our way to closing the funding gap.

Imagine “growing” one of our beloved National Parks at a time when some politicians are trying to harm them!

That’s the opportunity you and I have right now with the open space surrounding Arizona’s Saguaro National Park. The ancestral home of the Tohono O’odham people, Saguaro receives over a million visitors a year. The land in the Park is secure, of course. But the remaining 128 acres of open space around this pristine Sonoran Desert land, just a few miles’ drive from Tucson, is threatened by reckless development.

Increase access to nature for 28 million children

With gyms closed for so long — and maybe re-opened, but maybe then closed again — we’ve all seen how important it is to have a place to get some exercise, a place that you know is going to be open and available.

That’s why neighborhood parks are so important.

At a park, you can exercise at your own pace. It’s outdoors, which is much safer than indoors these days. And it’s green and sunny, which gyms usually aren’t.

If you have a gym membership, it may or may not be doing you any good right now. But what if you could transform your monthly gym membership into a tax-deductible gift to support the creation of new parks all across the country, especially in areas that lack access to green space? This is to inform you of the actions being taken on your behalf by The Trust for Public Land’s Federal Affairs team in Washington, D.C.

BACKGROUND

Our parks and public lands are the heart and soul of many American communities. Our forests, mountains, deserts, and plains support millions of jobs and help keep our air and water clean and healthy. They’re where we go to spend time in nature — days, hours, or just a few minutes — to enrich our lives. It makes us feel rejuvenated. Healthier. Happier.

In spite of the growing importance of parks and public lands to families from all walks of life, these shared spaces are facing rising threats. Powerful politicians and special interests are working behind the scenes in statehouses and in the halls of Congress to convert public property to private profit, to drill and mine on irreplaceable landscapes, and to dismantle critical sources of conservation funding. If these efforts succeed, the damage will be irreversible.

The special interests behind these efforts are powerful, but we are not giving up without a fight. The Trust for Public Land staff are working hard on your behalf on the ground and in Washington, D.C. to mobilize support for critical bills and policies to advance the use of parks and public land for the benefit of all Americans. With Congress coming back from recess today, we need to stand up and demand that public lands should be at the top of their agenda. Join the fight and show Congress that you want to protect our nation’s special outdoor spaces today.

Stop drilling and mining in Bears Ears and Grand Staircase

The Antiquities Act was signed into law in 1906 — giving U.S. presidents the authority to protect lands of historical, scientific, and cultural significance so these special places would not be at risk of destruction or reckless development. Since then, the Act has been used by just about every president to create or expand our country’s national monuments — until President Trump cut two million acres of protected lands from Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments on December 4, 2017.

Slashing two million acres from Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante put tens of thousands of archeological sites, Native American sacred sites, and recreational lands at risk of irreversible damage and looting. And now, the Trump administration has finalized management plans that put these precious areas of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase on the auction block — ready to be sold to the highest bidder to be drilled and mined for short-term profits.

Drilling, mining, or selling off any portion of Bears Ears or Grand Staircase is absolutely unacceptable. The grand sandstone buttes of the Valley of the Gods could be irreversibly damaged, the ruins on Cedar Mesa pillaged beyond repair, and the 100 million-year-old Wahweap Hoodoos forever destroyed.

National monuments are drivers of local economies, preserve majestic landscapes, and tell stories of our shared history. We need to be sure that not a single acre is taken from the public. That’s why we are also working on all fronts to rally support for the Antiquities Act (S. 367 and H.R. 1050), and the Bears Ears Expansion and Respect for Sovereignty Act (H.R. 871). The former would protect national monuments designated or expanded since 1996, and ensure that presidents cannot revoke or cut-back these special places without congressional approval. The latter proposes to expand Bears Ears to 1.9 million acres — restoring and adding to protections for over 100,000 archeological and cultural sites that are currently at risk. These bills must be passed to save Bears Ears, Grand Staircase, and other national monuments. We need your help to make it happen.

Fight for America’s land and water

In 1964, Congress passed landmark legislation to protect our nation’s wildlands, water, and cultural heritage called the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Act. The idea was simple: direct revenues from the depletion of one resource — offshore oil and gas drilling — to the protection of another resource — America’s land and water — to ensure access to recreation for all.

With this legislation in effect, Congress could use up to $900 million a year in revenue from oil and gas companies to create and safeguard parks, wildlife refuges, forests, and open space. Over the last 56 years, LWCF funds have been used to protect areas in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, including special places like the Appalachian Trail, Rocky Mountain National Park (pictured above), Sawtooth National Recreation Area, and the at-risk Rio Grande del Norte National Monument.

Together with your advocacy and support last year, we scored a big legislative victory by winning permanent reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund through the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act in Congress. Thanks to your help, we will never again need to fight for this essential conservation fund’s existence!

Despite this incredible victory, we are still fighting with everything we’ve got to ensure the LWCF receives full funding each year. For most years the program has been in existence, Congress and various administrations have diverted large portions of LWCF funds to other uses — placing public land protection projects across the country at their mercy. President Trump just released his 2021 budget to Congress, and it would virtually eliminate the LWCF.

Now is not the time to roll back funding for our public lands. We need to fight to ensure the LWCF receives the full $900 million each year. With your help, we are working to drum up media attention, visit Congressional staff in key states, and hold briefings with Congressional offices in Washington, D.C. We need your help to garner support so we can protect this essential conservation funding, and in turn, the future of our public lands.

Public lands, or private profit?

Since the average American spends more than 90% of their life indoors, our public lands and connection to nature are more important than ever. Yet, powerful politicians are working every day in statehouses and in the halls of Congress to convert public lands to private profit. Putting our public spaces in the hands of private companies goes against the very concept of public lands. In many cases, these special places are sold off or leased to companies that irreparably destroy archeological sites, recreational areas, and precious wildlife habitat.

We need to keep public lands in public hands. That’s why we are lobbying in Washington, D.C. to pass the America’s Public Land Act (S. 491). The Act will prevent the sale of public lands to private companies, unless authorized by Congress. With your help, we will be able to protect our lands from being sold off to the highest bidder and destroyed by reckless development.

Outdoors for All

Millions of Americans, including 28 million children, don’t have access to a green space close to home. Access to nature is essential: it not only improves public health and builds social capital, but also provides an opportunity to connect with nature — and each other. That’s why we are working across the country to connect more than three million people to 1,000 miles of local and national trails and greenways. We’re also leading the effort to urge Congress to pass two bills that will provide greater access to parks and nature: the Outdoors for All Act (H.R. 4512 and S. 1458), a bill that will lower the barrier to getting outside by providing grants for parks and recreation projects in underserved communities, and the Transit to Trails Act (H.R. 4273 and S. 2467), which provides grants for making public lands more accessible with public transit.

Nature’s landscapes inspire us, provide essential habitat for wildlife, and connect us to our shared history. For four decades we’ve worked tirelessly to protect many of our country’s most beloved and iconic trails, including magnificent landscapes along the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the North Country Trail. Just this past December in Utah, we were able to permanently protect the famous Zion Narrows Trail from closure and development — an incredible milestone that would not have been possible without your support!

Despite these efforts, some of our scenic trails still cross private land and could be blocked, gated, or closed off entirely to the public. To make sure that doesn’t happen, we are working hard in Washington, D.C. to pass the Complete America’s Great Trails Act (H.R. 1727). This bill would give tax credits to people who donate their land to help close gaps in National Scenic Trails.

Help us ensure access to nature for all Americans. Together, we can permanently safeguard National Scenic Trails, prevent irresponsible development, protect public access to pristine wilderness, provide recreational opportunities, and conserve habitats for threatened and endangered wildlife for generations to come.

Mitigate the worst effects of climate change

It is widely accepted that two degrees of global warming isn’t safe, but recent data from the UN shows we are on pace to surpass that number and warm as much as four degrees by the end of the century. Without urgent action from our nation’s leaders, we undoubtedly face a future of even more rising sea levels, habitat extinction, and extreme weather akin to the rampant wildfires in California and hurricanes like Florence and Michael.

That’s why we are working hard on your behalf in Washington, D.C. to develop effective climate policies which include natural climate solutions, and the protection of public lands and open space. Our goal is to safeguard people and communities from extreme heat, poor air and water quality, flooding, and sea level rise associated with climate change.

In the short term, we are working to pass three bills that will help us address climate policy. The first, the International Climate Accountability Act (H.R. 9 and S. 1743), will reverse President Trump’s decision in 2017 to pull the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement. This will better position us to implement effective, on-the-ground solutions that could help us avoid some of the worst effects of climate change. Taking the next steps beyond Paris, we are supporting the 100% Clean Economy Act (H.R. 5221 and S.3269) and the Climate Stewardship Act (H.R. 4269 and S. 2452), which together will limit carbon pollution from federal public lands, and create and fund ambitious urban forestry programs to naturally offset carbon emissions.
