When I started building my first online business
back in 2010 the best strategy was:

Unpopular opinion:
Your opt-in offer isn’t there to “build your email list”.
It isn’t there to get you more subscribers. It’s there to line up buyers and whet their appetite for your paid offer.
Just think about this…
You can’t take email addresses to a bank.
Offering random freebies for the sake of building a list doesn’t make any financial sense. A list of non-buyers and freeloaders is useless.
Low-quality subscribers are an expense, not an asset. They don’t buy anything from you, yet you still have to PAY to keep them on your list. They are an asset on your email service provider’s balance sheet, and a liability on yours.
I am here to help you build a business, not an expensive hobby.
To do that, you need to get website vistiors to see you as a bookstore not a public library. You need to build a list of buyers from the get-go.
Not sure what that would look like?
Let me share with you a little story about how FAST50 student Kylie used her opt-in offer to build a list of buyers in a new niche.
Her list had been stagnating at 350 subscribers for months, so she decided to run an experiment.
She’s a nutritionist, and normally she does health and wellness for her in-clinic clients. However, she realised she had access to many Facebook groups where students, new graduates and practitioners hang out (nutritionists, naturopaths, and herbalists).
So she decided to put out a product for this niche and use her opt-in offer as a test to see if the market is interested.
First, she decided on what she wanted to sell:
Business training for nutritionists, naturopaths and herbalists.
Second, she created an opt-in offer to fish out her target buyers from these FB groups and whet their appetite for her paid product.
Her opt-in offer was a free template pack that offered a few templates for starting your new healthcare business. She also added a video on how to set up Google Drive to store all your client files, and a video on how to customise the templates for your business.
If the idea worked, she would develop a larger template pack to sell as her product.
So she gave them a teaser, and then sold them the rest of the bundle.
Third, she wrote her opt-in page and sales page, and put her opt-in offer out there in the Facebook groups.
In other words, Kylie used a strategically designed opt-in offer to hook buyers from the get-go.
So what did the results look like?
Let’s zoom out for a second:
It took Kylie several months to get her first 350 subscribers. Then she doubled her list within 30 hours of implementing the FAST50 methodology. She also validated her product idea, so now she can build something 300+ hungry customers are already pounding on her door to buy.
Your opt-in forms the centerpiece of your sales machine, and when you do it right, you build a list of buyers and exponentially accelerate your list growth.
Going from a 5% opt-in rate to 50% is like suddenly opening the taps.

Our email list got to 120k contacts (125,839) ??
It's important to clean your email list on a regular basis
because sending emails to many email addresses that don't open will hurt your email deliverability
Luckily, it's very easy to do with systeme.io
(takes 5 minutes)
Here is how:
Just go to your contacts list (Menu => Contacts)
Select all contacts who had no activity since 3 months ago
("Activity" => "No activity since:" "date 3 months ago")
I prefer to keep our customer data for several reasons
(in case of the customer asks for a refund in the future, or just for accounting purposes)
So I'll use another criteria to keep only the contacts who have never purchased anything
("Contact state" => "Has not made any payment")
Now I have the list of all the contacts who have not opened or clicked any email in the last 3 months,
and who have never purchased anything from me (booo!)
I can then just click on "delete contacts" and voila! I got rid of those bad beans...
You can also tag them and try to re-engage them with an email sequence
you might get a few percents back on board ??

This is going to be controversial.
I don’t believe that you should “give value first”.
At least, the way it’s popularly taught.
Let me explain why.
Basically, “give value first” is the idea that you have to endlessly give away content for free before you “earn” the right to ask for a sale.
Jab, jab, jab - right hook.
I think this is the most disrespectful thing you can do to a customer - especially a serious customer.
First of all, it’s disingenuous.
Take all these “nurture sequences” and “goodwill emails” online gurus teach, for example.
Those fake “Here is who I am, I love you, I’m all about giving you actionable advice, here is all the free stuff you can expect from me” emails?
They bug me.
You receive these “pure value” emails which are suspiciously free of any reference to that business’s products. But you can see the sale at the end of the funnel from a mile away.
It’s disingenuous.
It’s manipulative.
When the pitch finally hits your inbox, something seems icky. Dishonest.
Because it’s the first time you’re hearing about this product... the whole thing feels like an ambush.
Why hide the fact that something for sale exists?
You’re not a charity. You’re a for-profit business. Obviously, you have products and services to sell. Hiding that makes your customers feel tricked.
This kind of dishonesty is a disease that’s rampant in online marketing, and it’s being propagated by the Cult of Value.
Second, “jab, jab, jab - right hook” seems incredibly selfish to me.
Your customers are searching now for help. They subscribe to your list now for help. And you’re going to make them wait till next week for help!
That’s not about the customer at all. That’s about the marketer’s emotions.
Are you really “nurturing” your customer - or “nursing” your own wounded inner child who is terrified of selling?
I suppose this kind of radical honesty makes me a pariah.
It certainly puts me in the minority.
But I’m glad I’m not the *only* one who sees the irony in pretending not to be playing while still trying to play…
I saw email marketing pioneer Ben Settle post this a while back:
“Customers have pains and problems that need to be solved. That’s why they’re on your list. Screwing around spending days or weeks trying to pretend you don’t have something that can benefit their lives while they are suffering seems incredibly selfish to me. Far more selfish than being honest and upfront and telling them there is something for sale that can help them. It makes no sense to not at least let them know your solution exists.”
If you’re ready to leave the incestuous Cult of Value, and start selling with integrity, then do this instead:
Be upfront about your product.
“You have a problem? Great, I have the solution. You can find it here.”
You can do this at the first point of contact - namely your opt-in page.
You can do it in the lead magnet itself - either:
(a) By telling them that the material they’re consuming is pulled out from your course, or
(b) By introducing your product as their next logical step
Let your subscribers know you have the solution.
Then offer a free “taster” to allow them to make an informed decision.
To show that you know your stuff and can be trusted to fix their problem.
Free content - like an opt-in offer - is about giving buyers who are already interested in what you have to sell the ability to make an informed choice.
It isn’t about nursing freeloaders into a welfare mentality until they feel beholden to buy from you.
That’s not a business. That’s a cult.
Bottom line:
Your customers are not dumb. Please don’t treat them that way.
Ultimately, you have a choice to make:
Do you want to build a cult that pretends to have nothing to sell while slyly working to “liberate” its followers from all their worldly possessions?
Or do you want to build a business that treats its customers with integrity, and sells openly, honestly and effectively?
If you want a cult...
Then keep writing the kind of disingenuous opt-in offers and sales emails that induce a sudden urge to take a shower and scrub guru oil off one’s skin.
Keep contaminating your prospects’ inboxes with “sales-wolves in value-clothing”.
But if it’s an honestly profitable business that you’re after…
