Link: Third Way Online Meeting (Thursday, May 7th)
Hey Jon,
Last week I taught a Masterclass for several hundred people who had pre-ordered The Money Tree. Can you have that many people on Zoom at once? Apparently you can!
It was a lot of fun, and in some ways, it reminded me of my book tours . you know, like the one I'm not doing now.
In the book, the main character Jake gets invited to a weekly meeting with a group of people who are all trying to create financial security for themselves. Some want to quit their jobs, others just need to pay off debt, and others like the idea of doing something different with their free time. It''s called The Third Way, and a lot of people have been asking me if there will be real-life Third Way groups.
Most of us aren''t able to meet in person right now, so I thought ... let''s do another big Zoom call! These days I'm up for all sorts of experiments.
Want to join in? It''s free-just click here to sign up!
Note: unlike other classes I've done, this group meeting will NOT be recorded and rebroadcast later, as the focus is on a real-time experience.
I look forward to talking with people who are reading the book and putting the ideas into practice. We'll go from 60-90 minutes, and most likely the format will be 50% teaching and 50% Q&A. Bring your questions and websites to share!
If you''re interested, sign up at the link and save the date! If you''re not, no worries. I won''t send any more mailings about it except to those who express interest.
To your future,
P.S. If you''ve read the book, I''d love to hear what you thought about it by leaving a review on Amazon.com and/or GoodReads. This is the best way for other readers to discover it, and early reviews can make a big difference.

Hey there Jon,
I''m starting to think about the future of Side Hustle School-and I''d love to get your input!
When I started this show back in 2017 (does anyone remember 2017??), I committed to do it for a year but had no idea it would still be going strong four years later.
As we slowly-but-surely come to the end of a tumultuous year for most of the world, I''m now thinking about what comes next in 2021. In terms of the podcast, this year we''ve had more listener questions and contributions than ever before, as well as the introduction of a popular "Throwback Thursday" segment. Whatever happens next, I want to make sure we keep growing and evolving.
What should we do more of or less of? What is most helpful to you?
I''d love to know your thoughts. You can always reach me directly from my blog, on social media (IG / Twitter), or by replying to any of these emails.
In Ep. 1384 we heard from Amy McCord Jones, a wedding florist in Oklahoma who founded Flower Moxie, a creative way for conscious brides to save on flowers.

Hey there Jon,
If you''re interested in learning how to source items for resale, perusing the listings at Alibaba can be insightful. There are a lot of items you can purchase.
When I recorded a Classroom episode on this topic last month, I listed a few that caught my attention:
And my personal favorite: live sheep from Somalia! (See photo below.)
With so many options, the selection of farm animals and big-booty jeans can be overwhelming. This week, a listener calls in asking for advice in how to narrow it down.
Live sheep for sale on Alibaba! They''re cheap-only $50 each on average-but you usually need to purchase at least 1,000...

Hey there Jon,
This week on the podcast, we featured a case study of a running fanatic who builds a multiple six-figure community, a listener who wants to start a Twitch channel, and more.
Meanwhile, in addition to the pandemic-which I''m guessing you''ve heard enough about-large portions of the U.S. west coast are now on fire. I''m out of the evacuation zone by a few miles, but the sky is filled with smoke and ash throughout the day.
One thing''s for sure: we''re not going to forget 2020 anytime soon...
From Ep. 1349: Bizzy Coffee thought they had a brilliant idea to sell "coffee shots," but they''ve switched to focusing on cold brew and have seen sales increase tremendously during the pandemic.

Hey there Jon,
The final month of the year arrives ... soon! As mentioned in a previous update, I''ve been reviewing the themes and archives of 2020, in preparation for making some big improvements next year. If you have any questions or suggestions, let me know. ????
On the show this week, we heard from the co-founder of a business that turns upcycled grains from breweries into delicious snacks. Also: a cardiologist discovers a new hobby in carving wooden bears-then gets his bearings and gets paid for it. Bear with me, folks.
In Ep. 1424: a truck driver gets paid to tag walls with his art. He''s booked solid for two full months!

Hey there Jon,
The U.S. election is over! Congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, our next president and vice-president. I support them wholeheartedly, but even if you had a different preference for how the vote went, I hope we can all come together as much as possible in the coming months.
Either way ... now we can get back to Side Hustle School!
On the podcast, we''ve featured a look back at a popular episode about children''s books on real life, and an orthopedics assistant who Peru-ses a series of trips to Machu Picchu.
I''ve also been hearing from a lot of people who are feeling weary about 2020 and have "Zoom flu." We''ll have several episodes about this in the next few weeks. Hang in there, everyone. ????
In Ep. 1403, a Texas designer makes and sells "flags for good," reflecting his lifelong enthusiasm for the symbolism of iconic visual displays of identity.

Hey there Jon,
One of the unique problems that 2020 has presented is the fact that work life and routines have changed for millions of people.
It's hard enough to adjust to working from home on your own if you haven't done that before. If you live with someone who also works from home, that's even more of an adjustment. If you have kids who are now going to school remotely (or at least attempting to!), the pressure becomes even more next-level.
On Monday''s episode, we heard from a caller who''s experiencing "Zoom fatigue." After so many hours spent in online meetings for her job, where does she find the energy to work on something for herself?
If you can relate, you''re certainly not alone. It''s one of the topics I hear about more than any other.
The good news-as you may have heard-is that a COVID-19 vaccine is on the way! In the meantime, stay safe and keep thinking about how you can best use this time. 2021 will be here before we know it.
In Ep. 1431: When a teacher gets re-certified in first aid after a ten year absence, he finds that compressing his knowledge into his own course will surely elevate his income.

Hey there Jon,
I heard from a listener the other day who wondered about sharing his opinion on the upcoming U.S. election. The full question and answer is coming up on the show in a few days, but for now: I don''t think you need to censor yourself to run a side hustle or small business.
So, if you have something to say ... speak up! I''ve been doing that on my blog and social media for those who are interested. (And for those who aren''t, of course, that''s okay-I''ll continue to publish books and podcasts on other topics.)
Most importantly, if you''re in the States and haven''t voted yet ... go do it!

Hey there Jon,
I''ve been doing bimonthly Zoom calls to talk through side hustle ideas with listeners, and each time I go away from the call feeling challenged and refreshed. The other day I heard from dozens of people who are taking action, making progress even in the midst of a difficult time, and trying to reframe setbacks for good. Keep it up!
Meanwhile on the podcast, this week''s Classroom episode was all about how to forecast your profit on the back of a napkin. My favorite story was about a guy who creates a beer koozie that goes on to make millions (yes, millions) of dollars. I wish I''d followed my childhood dream of making drink covers!
If you''re like me, you might struggle at times with pushing the same items forward on your to-do list every day. Consider this approach: DELETE them instead of postponing, and see how it feels.

Hey there Jon,
What have you been learning in the past few months? I''ve been asking this question recently and have heard some fascinating answers.
Lots of people have been baking-you''ve probably seen all the photos of sourdough bread in your feeds-and others have been cooking or woodworking. Some people are learning to code or brushing up foreign language skills. And of course, I''ve heard from more unusual examples as well. I think my favorite is a guy who''s learning carpentry and welding over Facetime from a more experienced craftsman.
How about you-are you using this time to upgrade your knowledge?
Like I''ve been saying since all of this started (you know, the pandemic thing...), I want to be able to come out of it with something I''m proud of. We have so little control over the world at large that it''s all the more important to be intentional about our choices.
And as always: be sure you care for yourself and check up on someone else. Maybe they need it!
Last week we featured a card deck that inspires thoughtful conversations. This week, we looked at one that helps people learn phrasal verbs in the English language-common expressions like "throw down" or "hold off."

Hey there Jon,
It''s a weird time for the whole world. Everyone''s always asking, "How are you holding up?" We begin or end our emails with "Hope you are staying safe over there." And when it comes to small businesses, some are thriving and others are struggling.
One of the things I said when the COVID season began back in March was that each of us has a limited amount of control. We can (and should) take appropriate measures to keep others safe, like wearing a mask whenever we''re out and about. Yet aside from simple things like that, most of us are in observer mode.
That''s why it''s all the more important to use this time well, so that we can come out of it with something we''re proud of.
I want us to be better when this is all over. In my case, I want to be able to say, "Yeah, that was a super weird year. I wasn''t able to go on book tour like I''d planned, or otherwise have a normal life, but I tried to be helpful and spend time each day making something."
Your example will be different-unless you also planned to go on book tour, of course-but I hope that you too can be proud of how you''ve spent your time during this strange season of life.
If you can''t change the world, in other words, you can always change yourself.
In Ep. 1298, a pharmacist gathers the perfect remedy for connection with her conversational card deck. It''s an ideal gift for homebound (or even virtual) sessions with family and friends.

Hey there Jon,
We''re going into the final three months of the year, and I have a confession: I''ve gotten a little off course. When the pandemic started, I wanted to come out of it better than I was before. In other words, I wanted to use the time well.
Well, I don''t think I''ve used the time poorly, but it''s also felt very strange, especially in the past few months. I have no travel commitments for the first time since 2002 (!), which naturally frees up more time-but I''m not entirely sure where it goes.
I''d ask if I''m the only one, but I''ve been hearing similar things from lots of people. If you have the answer, let me know. Either way, hang in there! These days are hard for all of us in different ways.
In Ep. 1380, a mom and her daughter try to make lip gloss-which turns out to be harder than it seemed. Fortunately, their second side hustle attempt (making soap) has been much more sud-successful.

Hey there!
I just wanted to check in... how's the book coming along? Have you finished it yet, or are you still going?
Here's a tip: the book is designed to be easy to read and follow along with. Over the course of 5 weeks, you'll go from idea to income. or at least you can, if you follow-through.
A number of people have asked if they have to follow the 27-day format. The answer is no, not really. You don't have to do much of anything in life. You don't have to listen to me or anyone else.
It's your book, your process, your side hustle. You do you!
However, I can tell you that it greatly helps to go in order and do a little each day-that's why I wrote the book this way. Each day you get one story and one step to work on. Everything is there for a reason.
If you make a little bit of progress on your hustle each day, it''s usually better than trying to batch everything at the end of the week (or month...).
So whether you read one mini-chapter a day or just work through the steps on your own timeline, make sure you don''t forget about why you''re doing this. You want more freedom and more options, right? That''s exactly what the right side hustle can do for you.
Coming next: Your free Task Tracker, a worksheet you can use to measure your progress as you work through the book.
To your hustle,
Chris Guillebeau
P.S. Are you listening to Side Hustle School? Every day I share a different story of someone who creates a new source of income without quitting their day job.

Hey there Jon,
Ever since I wrote The Money Tree, lots of people have been asking me if I''d be starting real "Third Way" groups that meet each week to talk about their side hustle. Well, that was my intention in March ... but then the pandemic hit. ?????
I regrouped (no pun intended...) and started a few different projects:
Now that lockdowns are changing, we''re moving forward with something new: a pilot project for ten small local groups ... and we''re looking for hosts and participants.
The cost is $0 (yes, it''s free!) but we do need people who are willing to commit to regular meetings and working on your project. Depending on the situation in each local area, some meetings may be held virtually.
At the end of the experiment, we''ll share what the groups have accomplished and feature many of the projects on Side Hustle School for all to hear. Apply now if you''re interested!

Hey there Jon,
After two months of the pandemic, Becs Prager in Austin, Texas, began to feel like the days and weeks were blending together. Becs wanted to mark the time with something meaningful to celebrate Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, every Friday night with friends.
Some people, however, were completely homebound. Enter the Mensch Box, a subscription service to bring Shabbat supplies to your door.
Working on this story (published today on the podcast) reminded me of some of the many subscription boxes we''ve covered since starting in 2017. Among others, I''ve learned about Korean face masks, candy from Japan, care packages for military spouses, and YA novels-just to name a few!

Hey there Jon,
This past week I hosted a meeting for several hundred people interested in the idea of a Third Way group, based loosely around my new book The Money Tree.
On the Zoom call, we heard from the guy featured in yesterday''s story: Mr. Writing Tutor, a New York City teacher who supplements his income with tutoring students for college-entry tests. That''s a competitive market, but he''s been able to thrive by focusing specifically on the writing portion of the tests.
(We''re going to do another free online meeting in a week or so. Join the list here and we''ll keep you updated.)
In other news, it''s still a tough time out there for many businesses, even as some parts of the world begin to slowly open up. I''m continuing to collect stories of how people are adjusting, adapting, and finding their way. Whatever''s going on in your world, know that you aren''t alone! We''re in this together. ????

Hey there Jon,
If there''s any one principle that stands out across our archives of more than 1,300 episodes (and counting), it''s that being helpful will never go out of style.
When you''re trying to decide what to choose for your first side hustle (or your tenth!), try going back to some basic questions:

Hey there Jon,
This week I taught a Masterclass with live Q&A for several hundred listeners. I''d never seen so many faces on a Zoom call before!
It was a lot of fun, and made me think that we should do something like that more often, especially while everyone is on lockdown. Stay tuned and I''ll see what I can put together. ??
In Side Hustle School news, this week featured a choreographer who moonlights as a voiceover artist, as well as the second part of a series on persuasion that began a week earlier. Oh, and ... cookies!
Let''s bake this happen! In Ep. 1207, a Tennessee couple tackles their debt by baking and selling a LARGE number of gourmet cookies. They now offer no-contact cookie pickup. ????

Hey there Jon,
Let''s be real: it''s hard out there. Here in the U.S. we''re closing in on the highest unemployment rate we''ve had in my lifetime (and, sadly, I''m not that young). Most other countries are struggling too.
At the same time, I''ve been collecting stories of people and businesses that are adapting to COVID-19 life, at least as best as possible.
For example, I''ve recently heard about:
You''ll hear more details about these stories and others in upcoming episodes. We''re all trying to figure out this extended time of lockdown. It''s not easy! But I also believe we can come out of it better than before-if we choose. Hang in there! ??????
Lots of people have asked if there are real Third Way groups, like I wrote about in THE MONEY TREE. Let''s talk about that: sign up for free and join me on Thursday evening! (If the time doesn''t work for you, check out my weekday YouTube Live streams. I''m going to keep doing them for at least two more weeks.)

Hey there!
Thanks for registering your copy of SIDE HUSTLE!
You need a hustle. now let's make it happen. Over the next few weeks, as you work on your hustle, I'll be writing you with free tools and tips that will help you along your way.
First, you'll get a bunch of bonus resources mentioned in the book: the profit predictor spreadsheet and a task tracker. Just keep checking your inbox in the coming days.
Second, I've noticed that people who are new to this process tend to have some common questions.
Rest assured, you're not the only one who's wondered these things, and I'll answer each of them (and more) as we go along. Saddle up! Help is on the way.
To your hustle,
Chris Guillebeau
P.S. Are you listening to Side Hustle School? Every day I share a different story of someone who creates a new source of income without quitting their day job.

Hey there Jon,
This week on Side Hustle School, we featured a woman who reframed anxiety into creativity. Unable to work her day job during the global pandemic, she starts a virtual meditation community that quickly grows to $2,700/month in recurring income-and this is only the beginning!
It''s just another example of how someone has looked for the opportunities in a time of uncertainty. Last week I told you about the photographer in Texas who offers social-distanced photo shoots by Facetime. What will this week bring?
In other news, I finished up my 30 Days of YouTube Live experiment, and shared some of the lessons in the final session. I''m not done streaming, though-on Tuesday I''ll be back with a new weekly series at the same time (9am Pacific).
Take it from me: helping someone can be an antidote to feeling overwhelmed. What can you do to be helpful during this time?

Hey there Jon,
Time marches on, waiting for no one and advancing in one direction only. It''s now been more than 1,300 days since I started making the daily podcast, in what feels like a very different world. It''s also been something like five months since we all had to change whatever plans we had for the foreseeable future.
Wherever you''re reading this note from, I''m guessing that your 2020 life is not what you expected it to be. You''ve either had to make a lot of changes, or your whole life has been turned upside down-those are pretty much the only options! And of course, we''re still in this thing, with no clear light at the end of the tunnel.
Sometimes I feel like I don''t know the answers to what we''re all wondering and worried about. Actually, let''s change that: I''m pretty sure I don''t know the answers.
All I know is what I''ve believed from the beginning: the best thing we can do is keep other people safe (please wear a mask-none of us like them, but they''ll help us get through this) and the second-best thing we can all do is show up, however we can and in whatever way that means to you.
How about you-how are you doing over there?
The "Near and Deer" taxidermy service sells *artificial* replicas of animal heads, antlers, and anything else you could possibly think of-including faux dinosaur displays. This is one of the greatest Side Hustle School stories of all time!

Hey there Jon,
This week on Side Hustle School, we featured a military spouse who starts a subscription box for families with service members deployed overseas.
I also enjoyed working on the story of a paranormal romance author from New Zealand who happens to be legally blind. There''s never a dull moment around here!
And of course, I would be remiss to mention the fact that-apart from our editorial calendar-global protests against police brutality and systematic racism have continued.
I know that some people question whether it''s wise to "use your platform" to speak out about human rights, but the real mistake is in remaining silent. Everyone has a part to play in creating positive change!

Hey there!
On Day 5 of SIDE HUSTLE, you learn how to predict your profit for any particular side hustle on the back of a napkin.
One problem with napkins is that they aren't great for storing things long-term. Also, if you change one variable on your napkin, you have to do all the math over again.
So here's a free spreadsheet that will do the math for you:
-> Get the SIDE HUSTLE Profit Predictor
Two important notes:
1. Even though it's a spreadsheet, don''t be intimidated. It's a very simple and friendly one. You plug in numbers and it provides answers. :)
2. Not every side hustle fits in this framework. Sometimes you don't have any idea how much money you'll make! In those cases, you just need to experiment. It's always good to spend more time DOING anyway.
What this tool-whether spreadsheet, napkin, or something else-can help you with is in understanding which of your ideas are worth pursuing.
A Real Example: The Birdwatching Class
In the book I give the example of a birdwatching class. There are two main variables here: the price of the class, and the number of students in the class. If you're trying to figure out how much money you might make with this course, you'll get your answer by adjusting either variable.
MODEL: 10 students @ $39 = $390
This is the basic model. You start with this and then adjust the variables to make predictions.
SCENARIO 1: 10 students @ $59 = $590
In this scenario, we raised the price from $39 to $59.
SCENARIO 2: 15 students @ $39 = $585
In this scenario, we kept the price the same, but increased the number of students.
See how it works? It's a quick-and-dirty tool to help you make decisions as you narrow down your ideas.
Speaking of that, making decisions is a CRITICAL part of side hustling. It''s almost always better to make a decision one way or another than to remain stuck.... so get the information you need, then move forward.
You''ve got this!
To your success,
Chris Guillebeau

Hey there!
As promised, we've been working on a special "Task Tracker" for you. Lots of people are going through the book and setting up their first hustle, and I hope this makes it a little easier for you to keep up with your progress.
-> Get the SIDE HUSTLE Task Tracker
This tool is 27 pages long (there''s lots of details and exercises!), so I recommend you print a copy and keep it with you as you work through things.
By now, you may know that there are two problems that people struggle with:
1. Not having a good side hustle idea
2. Not knowing how to turn that idea into income
The book will help you with both problems. The first half is about learning where good ideas come from, and how you can choose the one that''s best for you now. The second half is about bringing that idea to life and turning it into a moneymaking project.
With the Task Tracker, you can check off each day''s step as you work through the book. Of course, some steps may take longer the others, but the point is that it''s good to see how far you''ve come.
Coming next: your free Profit Predictor spreadsheet. If you don't like writing on the back of a napkin. you might like this file that you can edit however you''d like.
I hope these resources are helpful. Now get back to work!
To your hustle,
Chris Guillebeau
P.S. By popular request, I''m also building a Side Hustle School community and detailed training program. Stay tuned and you'll be the first to know about it!

Hey there Jon,
Happy holiday weekend to those in the U.S.! The way 2020 has gone, I didn''t even realize Independence Day was coming up ... but there it was, appearing as usual on the Fourth of July.
Wherever you are, I hope you''re safe from coronavirus and doing something that matters to you.
Earlier this week we featured an episode on getting unstuck. I often hear from listeners who struggle to launch-or if they do launch, they quickly reach a plateau.
In my experience, being stuck is (often) as much a mental block as it is a practical problem. To get unstuck, it sometimes helps to approach the issue from a different angle or perspective. What''s another way you can look at the problem? What haven''t you tried?

Hey there Jon,
What a year it''s been. Starting next week, I''ll be working on new material to help all of us get 2021 off to a fresh start. I look forward to sharing it with you!
On Friday we had a special call-in from a listener in Finland, who was having trouble getting around the world to deliver a series of goods. I hope we solved his problem...
Earlier in the week, we looked at a cleaning business inspired by a post on Reddit. If you aren''t sure what idea to pursue, feel free to borrow one of ours. There are now more than 1,400 episodes in the Side Hustle School archives, all available freely for your enjoyment.
Can you use side hustle income for your retirement fund? Absolutely! One of our callers wants to know more-check out Ep. 1456 for her question and my answer.
