"Our love for all dairying led us to a unique situation of having the two distinct herds, traditional and organic. Our traditional herd started in the 1990’s with 50 cows and has grown with our family to the current size of 600 cows at the traditional farm. The traditional cattle live on a new farm site built in 1999 and expanded in 2003. In 2017 a state-of-the-art rotary parlor was built. The cows are housed in a sand bedded freestall barn and during the nice times of the year, cattle can go out on grass pastures to graze, exercise and enjoy the sun.

In 2000, we recognized the growing consumer trend and interest in organic foods so we developed a portion of our herd using organic practices. The organic herd consists of 250 cows that live a half mile north of the Creamery location. A considerable amount of the organic cows’ diet is from grass grown on our organic pastures.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our milk, every month we test the quality of each cows'' milk so we can ensure the safest, highest quality and best tasting products to our customers. Prior to the creation of our creamery, our milk was put on a truck and pooled with milk from other farms and that was the last we ever saw of it. June Dairy Month usually involves all sorts of ways to connect with and meet those who are the heart of the dairy industry - but things look a little different this year.  But there are still LOTS of opportunities to participate in virtual events and you can find all the details HERE.

 🧀 Hook''s Cheese:  (Mineral Point, WI) The award-winning cheesemakers with over 90 years of experience. "In 1970 Tony Hook began apprenticing at a small cheese factory in Barneveld and got his cheesemakers license in 1972. 🍧Mullen''s Dairy Bar: (Watertown, WI)  Started in 1932 by Frank Mullen., Sr. & continued today by the Keepman brothers. "When Frank Mullen Sr., began a new dairy and milk route in 1911, it would mark the beginning of the Mullen family dairy legacy in Wisconsin. The route began near the Mullen’s farm on the southwest side of Watertown where Frank delivered butter, milk, and cream. As business grew, many said Frank’s products were “the very best to be had.”

🙌CHILI SEASON!🙌

One of the reasons we love fall weather so much is because it gives us the perfect excuse to start a pot of chili, right!?! It’s one of those meals that everyone has their own little way of eating it. So, how do you enjoy your chili? 

5 CHILI IDEAS TO SERVE THIS FALL:👇

1.  Meat Chili – Depending on what you might have on hand, go either very basic with just meat, chili beans, kidney beans, tomatoes, sauce & spices - OR.... maybe throw in chopped onions, peppers, and even corn.  Some prefer their chili topped with sour cream (or greek yogurt) & cheese.  Try it with Wisconsin Meadows 100% Grass-fed Ground Beef (from Elkhorn). 

2.  White Chicken Chili – Here’s a good recipe. It''s a little spicy! Keep it simple with chicken, northern white beans, 8 oz of sour cream & a block of Monterey Jack cheese.  Thrown in the crock pot, it’s super easy. Another one, that some may like it topped with sour cream & cheese (even though both are already in the recipe)!

3.  Tofu Chili – Check out this recipe.  Tofu isn’t for everyone, but if it’s your thing … this is a really fun version worth trying. 

4.  Chocolate Chili – Our motto is that everything tastes better with a little bit of chocolate.  So, that might be the case for chili too?!?  A super fun foodie blogger posted this recipe on her blog, House of Hills.  Definitely worth making a note in the ole recipe book. 

5. Pumpkin Chili – It’s been a while since we''ve had pumpkin chili.  It’s perfect for the fall and usually a little sweeter or creamier. This recipe is actually dairy and gluten free. Enjoy!

Pickup & Delivery - Demand for pickup and delivery has been high and we appreciate your patience as we have ramped up to meet the increased demand.  We added staff and that means LOTS more pickup slots are available and we have added more delivery windows, too.  

• Pickup and delivery for Madison shoppers is available by clicking HERE.
  • Hilldale Pickup orders are Touch-Free!  Order online, park in our drive-up circle in front of the store, call 608.238.7612 and open the trunk.  Our team takes care of the rest!
  • Touch-Free Curbside PickUp is coming soon to Wauwatosa!
• Delivery for Madison and Wauwatosa shoppers is available from Instacart HERE. Contactless delivery is offered by Instacart. 

If you are able to leave the house, please consider choosing Pickup, rather than Delivery, leaving Delivery slots open for those in our community who are physically unable to leave their homes.  

Supply Chain - Continue to look for our weekly ad in your paper, mailbox or on our website.  We remain committed to providing high quality products and the best values that we can.  While deliveries have mostly now stable, you will still see limits on certain high-demand items (such as paper products, cleaning products and sanitizer). As we continue through this crisis, Metcalfe''s will only increase prices if wholesale prices have increased and we follow the pricing standards set by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

WEATHER IMPACT ON FRESH PRODUCE  - We have been advised by our suppliers that fires and hurricanes have the potential for a negative impact on the quality of our fresh produce in the coming weeks. 

• California leafy vegetables, lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower- these items are showing stress due to high temperatures.  This includes irregular sizing, shapes, tip burn and possible discoloration. In addition leafy items could also show signs of ash from the River wild fire near Salina’s CA. The industry is adding extra steps to the cleaning of product for value added items, but field packed whole leaf items could be impacted by signs of ash.
• Hurricanes /tropical storms could cause damage or disruptions ports, which could delay banana in bound shipments. The storms also have the potential to damage southern grown crops such as peppers, cucumbers, squash, cabbage and cooking greens. 
• Excessive heat in Canada is negatively impacting Ontario green-house operation, severally limiting supply and reducing quality. 
• The California heat wave is also taking a toll on several fruits. Strawberry quality is lower than normal with heavy bruising. Blackberries will likely be unavailable due to the heat and low production. 
• Extreme temperatures are causing issues for our peach and nectarine growers, which will likely impact supply. 

We continue to do our best to source the best produce possible, but these are conditions out of anyone''s control.  We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work through this time together.

Piles of Smiles!😀 - Smile With The Community Club from Edgewood High School collected donations to deliver cookies for the front-line healthcare workers at hospitals in Madison. Their goal was $400 and the Edgewood staff and families collected a whopping $1200 in donations! The Metcalfe''s bakery team was busy baking and decorating cookies and earlier this week, 200 packages of cookies to were delivered to SSM Health, St Mary''s Hospital and UW Hospital in Madison. MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

You may know that Metcalfe''s is where Brat Fest all started in 1983 with third-generation owners Tom and Margaret Metcalfe hosting a customer appreciation event outside the Hilldale location, cooking up some brats on a 22" Weber grill. For the safety of all, the difficult decision was made to cancel Brat Fest 2020.

  • Keeping distance from others is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.

😷Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others in public

• The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected.
• Wear a cloth face cover in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. 
• Continue to keep about 6 feet between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.

PAGEL''S PONDEROSA (From Kewaunee) Carl and Garnet Pagel''s farm started out in Kewaunee in 1946 with 80 acres and just a few cows, chickens, and hogs. Today, the third generation of the Pagel family and over 100 employees work to bring delicious dairy products to our shelves.

CRYSTAL FARMS (From Lake Mills) Nathan Friedell and Julius Rosenberg''s successful companies began in the early 1900s and later merged into what we now know as Crystal Farms, producing eggs, cheese and other dairy products in Lake Mills

MURPHY FARMS (From Soldier''s Grove) Tom and Sally Murphy have been selling at the Dane County Farmer''s Market for 28 years and now you can also find their hand-rolled butter from Soldiers Grove in Metcalfe''s dairy department.

LAMERS DAIRY (From Appleton) Lamers Dairy has been a family owned and operated dairy in Appleton, Wisconsin since 1913. All of their milk is certified rGBH-free and comes from just a few carefully chosen family farms located within 30 miles of the dairy

STORE HOURS Hours at all locations remain 6am-9pm daily. Courtesy Hours are from (6am-8am) on Monday, Wednesday,Friday and Sunday for those who are at a higher risk of severe illness by COVID-19. SANITIZED FOR SAFETY - CARTS & BASKETS

If you have been shopping in-store, you''ve met members of our team in the vestible who keep our carts clean and sanitized before you enter the store. 

1. A Metcalfe''s team member sanitizes carts and baskets before & after each shopper uses them, by hand.  This happens continuously throughout the day during all hours of operation.
2. Overnight Deep Clean - Every night after closing, our carts are sanitized using a Clorox 360 electrostatic sprayer.  Learn more about it HERE.  This same machine is used to sanitize our cashier stations as well as our office areas.
3. Hand sanitizer stations - While shopping, you''ll find 36 sanitizer stations throughout the store. We have them conveniently located for both shoppers and our team members to use anytime.

Kevin Metcalfe slipped off his mask & snapped a quick selife while on a recent cart cleaning shift at our West Towne store. 

BULK WATER & COFFEE RETURNING

• Our water refill stations have reopened
• We are working with our prouducers to re-open bulk coffee stations and expect them to be back in action by 6/5.  Our team will be cleaning these areas the same way that we clean all high-touch surfaces throughout the store.  Hand sanitizer pumps will also be placed next to these areas for customer use.

​MADISON CAFES RE-OPENING

Have you been missing fresh, locally roasted coffee from True Coffee Roasters?  Us too!  Things will look a little different for now, but we will be reopening our Hilldale and West Towne cafes next week.  Here''s what you need to know:

• We will implement the same increased sanitiation protocols being used throughout our stores in the cafe areas. 
• Bulk coffee will be available, but tins cannot be refilled at this time.  All bulk coffee purchases from the cafe will be packed into a 12oz. bag. 
• Takeout only - no cafe seating will be available at this time.  We do plan to bring it back in the future. 
• No personal cups - all orders will be prepared in single-use cups
• Hot sandwiches will not be sold from the cafe, but they are available on our Hot Bar (in the deli area).  Bakery selections in the cafe will also be limited for now.
• Hours will be 7am-2pm, daily.

We plan to re-open our Wauwatosa cafe, too - just not quite yet. BUT!  We expect to have bulk coffee beans from Milwaukee''s Colectivo Coffee back (just outside our cafe area) by the end of next week (6/5).

• Antioxidants, especially quercetin, in apples and apple products play an essential role in reducing risks of prevalent diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s. 
• Apple consumption increases the number of good gut bacteria. 
• Eating one apple a day for four weeks lowered blood levels of oxidized LDL, the “bad cholesterol,” by 40%. 
• Ursolic acid, a natural compound found in the apple’s skin, may prevent muscle wasting that can result from aging or illness.
• Pectin in apples is a good source of soluble fiber. 

APPLE TIPS

• Store small quantities in your refrigerator, in plastic bags in the crisper--between 34 and 40 degrees. Don’t allow them to freeze. apples can absorb odors from other foods, keeping apples in plastic bags prevents this and helps apples retain their own moisture.
• Apples ripen six to ten times faster at room temperature than if they were refrigerated. One or two days sitting on a counter top and the fresh crunch of your apple is lost forever.

🧀 Rush Creek Reserve season is HERE! Made by Uplands Cheese Company in Dodgeville, it pairs nicely with cured meats, roasted root vegetables and off-dry white wines.

A Note From The Metcalfe Family

Metcalfe’s has been serving communities for over 100 years and are privileged that our stores are connecting points- bringing people, local products, quality food, and friendly faces together and enriching lives with quality local goods that our shoppers can trust. The health and safety of our team and shoppers are always a top priority. Planning  - Our emergency preparedness team provides timely communication and action for our team members and shoppers, closely monitors updates from the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization and seeks guidance from state and local agencies as well as public health officials. 

Our Team - Encourage team members to closely monitor their health and well-being and provide adequate resources for education and prevention.

Cleaning – Implement additional cleaning procedures, provide additional cleaning supplies such as hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes and soap for team members and shoppers and use Enviro-Master services Electrostatic Spraying disinfecting, which kills bacteria and viruses with EPA registered, hospital grade disinfectant. 

Supply Chain - Due to high demand and limited supply, select product purchases are limited to (2) each, per order until further notice: hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol, alcohol wipes/prep pads, disinfecting wipes, aloe, hydrogen peroxide, masks, gloves, sanitary paper products and cold & flu medications.

Limiting Access & Exposure – Discontinued self-sampling, updated delivery driver policy and implement social distancing measures when possible. Store access is now limited to our team and shoppers only – no non-essential vendor visits or non-profit partners.

We also encourage shoppers to limit their own exposure by choosing to have groceries delivered. Our partnership with Instacart allows a wide variety of delivery windows and includes a “Leave At My Door” delivery– an option to choose to have your order left outside, providing you with additional ordering flexibility. Face Coverings -  As of today (4/17/20), all team members and vendors at Metcalfe''s are required to wear face coverings.  Metcalfe''s will provide disposable masks, or team members can provide their own cloth or disposable face covering. Social Distancing

• One-Way Aisles - Follow the arrows in each aisle in order to allow more space, making it easier for everyone to practice proper social distancing.
• One Person, One Cart - Not shopping in groups makes it easier to practice social distancing while shopping. We understand there are exceptions and simply ask for your cooperation whenever possible. 
• Capacity Limits - Only 150 shoppers at a time will be allowed in any Metcalfe''s location until further notice.
• Please continue to do your best to keep six feet (that’s two grocery cart lengths) between you and other shoppers and our team members. Every one of our team wants to continue to provide incredible customer service.  And in order for everyone to stay safe, our team may ask shoppers to step back while we are interacting.
• And a reminder of social distancing measures already in place: Floor decals, Plexiglas shields at check stands & customer service counters and Contactless payments.

• You may have seen news coverage of several meat processing plant closures.  We are doing everything possible to make sure there is a regular supply of all products for our shoppers. Please respect any limits signs placed near products that are either in limited supply or exceedingly high demand.
• Sanitizer update!  We believe we have found a regular supply of sanitizer from Doundrins Distilling in Cottage Grove.  We are so thankful for our local producers!

We partnered with The Alaffia Foundation (TAF), which is a 501(c)3 organization, again this year to help them collect eye glasses. TAF’s mission is to empower African communities through the advancement of Fair Trade, education, sustainable living and gender equality.

Here''s a little more information about the the project that we helped facilitate at all of our locations:👇 

In Togo, it is extremely difficult for the visually impaired to obtain eyeglasses. An eye exam can cost up to one month’s wages and a pair of eyeglasses can cost up to four months’. Alaffia collects used eyeglasses at retailer locations throughout the US and employs an optometrist in Togo to correctly fit and distribute them. A pair of eyeglasses is life-changing for a child struggling in school, the elderly with failing vision and adults who have never been able to see clearly.

The amino acid Tyrosine also boosts dopamine production. While it’s generally found in protein-rich foods, red beets, spinach, and ripe bananas are perfect produce choices for boosting your intake of tyrosine.

Yes, fruits and veggies are important, BUT, beer and cheese are just so much fun! This IS Wisconsin - after all - the land of BEER and CHEESE.

For the next few weeks you will see some local beer and cheese pairings on our social media channels, all thanks to our very own cheese mongers (AKA experts!) and friends from Wisconsin Distributing (we''re lucky to have them around as our resident beer experts!).

"Menu planning for your weekend at home?! We highly recommend adding a lil Beer 🍻 and Cheese 🧀 charcuterie to the mix! Hook’s Cheddar is a community favorite! It has a sharp flavor that finishes sweet which preps you for a sip of the chocolatey malty O''so Brewing Company Night Rain. We also enjoyed the extra texture by including local caramel corn to this pairing."

Our latest episode is a simple recipe with local tasty ingredients for a Cast Iron Pizza. We used fresh herb pizza dough (found in the bakery at Metcalfe''s), Di Salvo''s pizza sauce, BelGioioso fresh mozzarella and fontina, as well as, Sartori parmesan. Enjoy!

Starting on Monday July 13, 2020 Metcalfe’s Market will require all shoppers at all locations to wear a face covering that covers their mouth and nose.  The following exceptions apply:

• Individuals with a medical condition, mental health condition, or disability that prevents wearing a face covering. 
• Individuals who are hearing impaired, or communicating with a person who is hearing impaired, where the ability to see the mouth is essential for communication.

FREE, single-use, disposable face coverings are available as you enter or at our customer service desk (one per shopper, per visit). COVID 19 cases continue to rise and it will take all of us working together to help build consumer confidence, and help our local economy reopen as soon as possible.

The health and safety of our team members, shoppers and community are a priority.  As a precautionary measure to help reduce the spread of COVID-19,   starting this week, Metcalfe’s Market will implement body temperature screening for all employees prior to the start of their workday.
