David''s "WOW" - Wine Of The Week!
2015 Cesari Amarone'' - Venetto, Italy
92 Points - James Suckling
Reg. $65 / Today Only $45.99!
Amarone'' is one of Italy's most recognizable and prestigious red wines amongst those who love European Old World wines. While there are many wines that are intriquing from Italy, Amarone'' would make a fantastic gift as it''s so unique and highly respected that anyone would love to get a bottle. Whenever I have been to Italian industry tastings, seems everyone''s always gathered around the Amarone'' producers!
What is Amarone''? The wine is made from the 3 grapes that make up all Valpolicella wines - Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, but unlike regular Valpolicella wines, the grapes are air dried (called appassimento) for 3-4 months before pressing. This process evaporates the majority of the water and the grapes lose about 30-40% of their original weight. This results in extremely concentrated juice to make the wine from.
Founded in 1936, Gerardo Cesari''s wines were one of the very first from the region to make a splash on the world stage. Their history, old vines, and cachet within the industry has kept them in the forefront of Amarone'' producers. When it comes to gift giving, it never hurts to give a bottle of wine that has a prestigious reputation that also the experts have told you is drinking great right now!
After the drying and pressing of the grapes, the wine goes thru slow fermentation months after harvest, then sits in small French oak barrels and part of it in large Slavonian oak barrels for 12 months. Following blending, the wine ages an additional 16-18 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, then 6-8 additional months in bottle. You can probably guess by now why it''s expensive.
Expect intense notes of dried fruit such as plum and cherry, with nuances of anise, toasty oak and hints of vanilla. This is a full, warm, luscious red with compelling aromas and a velvety mouthfeel. Amarone'' ages gracefully for upwards of 10 years if stored properly. Buy the Cesari Amarone'' today and save $20 on this one-time amazing offer. You most likely won''t see a deal of the magnitude on this ever again!
