i learned this Woody Guthrie song (featured on the new Resistance Revival Chorus record, This Joy) to sing with the RRC at the DC Women’s March. The song is actually called "All You Fascists Bound To Lose" but my friends and i (who tested negative and podded-up to make the journey to the DC march together) have come to call it simply "Boundalose." it became the theme song of our trip and, in this moment, it feels kinda like the theme song of our country. or so we hope as we hold our breath and pray for the people of America to rediscover the power and the glory of voting. so here we are, my pod of friends: Zoe Boekbinder, Gracie and Rachel and Diane Patterson, performing the song on October 18th, 2020 after they surprised me with a belated happy 50th b-day picnic. definitely one of my favorite birthday parties ever. -ani

i wrote this song on the very last tour i did, last february on the west coast. nobody in america had heard of covid-19 yet but certainly it was out there, so it''s ironic that this is the metaphor i chose to talk politics. "contagious" is basically a plea to the democratic party establishment (or is it a vow to myself?) not to stoop to the lyin, cheatin tactics of their adversaries. as hard as it is to play by the rules, act on principle, and maintain your honor when you feel like you’re the only one in the room doing so, that''s exactly what it will take to get us out of here. i borrowed the refrain from one of my favorite democrat badasses, michelle obama. -ani

Sparked by a dream Pieta had and a Charlie Chaplin movie, We Are Not Machines echoes and weaves timeless universal messages.

Pieta says, “To offer this collaboration (across space and time!) with friends and family and mentors means the world to me: especially at this moment.. ''Let us all unite!'' This song started in a dream I had a couple years ago a few weeks after watching a Charlie Chaplin movie.  In the dream I walked into an empty, run-down warehouse to play a show. There was no one there. No crew. No one. There was no gear.  No microphones. But, I remember I walked up and out to the middle of an old stage, looked out at the empty room and started singing. And I kept singing this phrase ''we are not machines'' over and over. Somehow, people started coming in the warehouse slowly, and then all of the sudden I was hearing voices singing with me. ''We are not machines…we are not machines.'' The warehouse filled up with people...in a blur…all kinds of people. Many people had umbrellas, and they kept opening them...and I realized it had started to rain in a little bit through the crumbling ceiling…but everyone just kept singing. And here we are still singing. And here I am still dreaming."

Revolutionary Love, the name of my new single and upcoming album, came to me via my friend Valarie Kaur, who writes and speaks on the concept and breaks it down, in her own terms. Valarie and I both wrote books in the last few years and became early readers of each other’s manuscripts, offering feedback prior to publication. Her book is called See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love, which, in some ways, could have been the title of my book too — but I went with No Walls and the Recurring Dream. Although our books are obviously quite different, I believe they are kindred. They are very American and very Female stories of rising up and becoming. Stories of aggregating and synthesizing hard-fought lessons, to perpetrate a devastatingly feminist hack on tradition.

Black Lives Matter and it is time for americans to stand up now. heed the lesson of the 2016 election: this is not a shoe-in. in november, we will need to vote in such massive numbers as to overwhelm massive corruption. not only must we vote out [#votethemout], we must vote in enough people to pass the breathe act, a visionary bill that divests our taxpayer dollars from brutal and discriminatory policing and invests in a new vision of public safety. we’ve got to vote in people all the way down the ballot who will enact meaningful policy change which rises to this historic moment and heeds the call of the american people for justice. insistent, tenacious, against-all-odds voter participation this november will become the difference between life and death for many. nothing will stem the tide of suffering from covid-19, economic crisis, police brutality, mass incarceration, endemic poverty, entrenched white supremacy and misogyny, deportation and detainment, gun violence, fire, flood, disease, pollution, irradiation, exploitation, forced reproduction, gender and sexuality-based violence and oppression, dis-information, propaganda, corruption, and greed... short of a functioning democracy! let’s harness our outrage and vote. we can do this, if we try, if we do this like it’s do or die.

i recorded this song in a semi-abandoned strip mall in durham, north carolina, with some very talented musicians from that area. we all came out of isolation for the session and i wore a mask except when i was in front of a microphone singing. i didn’t know any of the players before the session. the group was put together by brad cook and included his brother phil cook on keys, yan westerlund on drums, brevan hampden on percussion and matt douglas on flute. later, my touring compadre terence higgins overdubbed some more percussion and a string quartet called delgani was added in eugene, oregon, arranged by my other touring companion, todd sickafoose. pandemic productions! -ani

Proceeds from the first week of sales of this track go to Women’s Audio Mission (WAM), a non-profit based in their native Bay Area whose mission is to promote the advancement of women, girls and gender-expansive folks in music and the recording arts.
