August 19th is
International
Orangutan Day!

 We are thrilled to introduce you to the newest member of our adoption program: JoJo 

JoJo was the first orangutan to be rescued by our partner International Animal Rescue. He was discovered sitting in an open sewer. His ‘owners’ had chained him up on a wooden pallet and his body was hunched over and weak from a lifetime spent in a tiny cage with a diet in no way suitable for an orangutan. But despite the horrific living conditions, JoJo still had a sparkle in his eye, so we knew there was still hope for this beautiful soul.

JoJo is unreleasable.
He will need sanctuary care for the rest of his life.

M.O.M. - Missing Orangutan Mothers

Every year, to celebrate Mother's Day in the U.S. Orangutan Outreach holds the Missing Orangutan Mothers (MOM) campaign. Our aim is to raise awareness of the importance of the orangutan mother-child relationship and bring attention to the tragically high number of orangutan orphans who need support.

Since 2008 MOM events have been held around the country, but this year, of course, everything will be online! We invite you to get involved from the comfort of your own home!

Emergency Covid-19 Relief Fund for BOSF

 

 

In March we set up an emergency Covid-19 Fund to help the BOS Foundation get through this difficult period— and YOU answered our call! The campaign has been a huge success. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who has donated so far! 

Both BOSF facilities remain closed to all non-essential personnel. The team continues to provide essential daily care for the 440+ orangutans, with limited exposure and special health protection measures in place for all staff.   

Critical supplies of medicines, disinfectant, soap, face masks, gloves & other PPE, which are vital to control zoonotic disease transmission, are becoming harder to source, as is the huge quantity of food needed to feed the orangutans. And prices continue to rise as demand grows. 

We know that many people are facing financial difficulties in this difficult time, but if you are able to help, the orangutans being cared for by BOSF desperately need your support.

Please make a donation to help the BOS Foundation continue to care for the orangutans during this crisis. 



100% of donations made to the Covid-19 Fund will be sent to the BOS Foundation to care for the orangutans.

Noni & Dodo are a lovely orangutan pair who are being cared for at the Cikananga Wildlife Center on Java Island. They were rescued from the illegal pet trade many years ago but red tape has kept them from moving back to Borneo. BOS Nyaru Menteng is the largest orangutan rescue & care center in the world. It is home to hundreds of orphaned and displaced orangutans— from tiny infants to giant cheekpadders.  

At the end of the day, the infant orangutans head back to the Baby House where they receive a snack before going to sleep.... These orangutans are orphans. Their mothers were killed. We're doing our best to make sure they have everything they need until they can return to the wild— where they belong!  But they need YOUR help!

Noni & Dodo's Summer Update 

Noni & Dodo are a lovely orangutan pair who are being cared for at the Cikananga Wildlife Center on Java Island. They were rescued from the illegal pet trade many years ago but red tape has kept them from moving back to Borneo. August 19th is
International
Orangutan Day!

 We are thrilled to introduce you to the newest member of our adoption program: JoJo 

JoJo was the first orangutan to be rescued by our partner International Animal Rescue. He was discovered sitting in an open sewer. His ‘owners’ had chained him up on a wooden pallet and his body was hunched over and weak from a lifetime spent in a tiny cage with a diet in no way suitable for an orangutan. But despite the horrific living conditions, JoJo still had a sparkle in his eye, so we knew there was still hope for this beautiful soul.

JoJo is unreleasable.

Orangutans & COVID-19

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR EMERGENCY FUND

 

As we join together to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus, we offer our sympathies to those of you who have already been affected by the virus.

Orangutan Outreach has set up an emergency Covid-19 Fund to help the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) get through this difficult period.

We don't yet know if this virus could spread within the orangutan population in the rescue centers, but since they share approximately 97% of our DNA and are susceptible to the common cold, it's a very real and frightening possibility.

As a result of this situation, both BOSF centers have been closed to all non-essential personnel. Volunteer programs have been put on hold and all fundraising events have been cancelled. This is having a tremendous impact on the income required to keep operations running.  

BOSF continues to provide essential daily care for the 440+ orangutans living in the rescue centers, with limited exposure and special health protection measures in place for the animal carers.

Critical supplies of medicines, disinfectant, soap, face masks, gloves and other PPE, which are vital to control zoonotic disease transmission, are becoming harder to source, as is the huge quantity of food needed to feed the orangutans. And prices are rising as demand grows. 

The orangutans being cared for at the BOSF rescue centers depend on us for everything... and they need your help.

In this unprecedented time, we know that many people are facing financial difficulties, but if you are able, the orangutans desperately need your help.
