It's been a week. And while many of us are understandably exhausted, the people we featured on We Are Not Divided this week have kept our optimism afloat. Wait, you may be thinking, didn't I already hear from Reasons to be Cheerful this week?

You're right. You did. And we hope you don't mind, but for the next six weeks we'll send you two emails per week instead of one, because today Reasons to be Cheerful is launching a special project. It's a project that explores the very human capacity - and deeply human desire - to bridge divides. It's called We Are Not Divided, and because that's something you don't hear very much about, we're publishing every day.

Visit We Are Not Divided

From now until November, we're delving into the many ways people come together through science, politics, technology, religion, social movements and culture. We're telling these stories through evidence-driven reporting, multimedia and first-person voices, with the same sense of solutions-focused, healthy optimism that always guides us. Joining us on this endeavor is a group of collaborating media partners, including The Guardian, The Tyee, Freakonomics Radio, the Solutions Journalism Network, Next City, and The Marshall Project, to name but a few.

Because the truth is, the evidence that we can overcome our divisions is everywhere. It's in the student groups working to depolarize their college campuses in Corvallis, Oregon; the residents of Victoria, Canada toppling a statue in a way that led to reconciliation rather than strife; and the Congolese refugees of Syracuse, New York defusing old rivalries by performing a play.

We will never all want the same thing. But with this project, we hope to show that if we can locate the bridges we've already built, we can build more of them.

Second chances don''t always turn out the way we think they will.

For instance, when one is released from prison, the constant threat of discrimination can thwart a fresh start. Likewise with immigration - a new home can promise a second act, but when the conflicts you fled follow you across an ocean, those hopes can quickly be dashed.

This week, as part of Reasons to be Cheerful's special project, We Are Not Divided, we're featuring the stories of people who turned their second chances into opportunities to bridge divides. They did this by finding unity in unexpected places: a former prison inmate in a local bank branch, a refugee on a stage. How they reached across rifts to find common cause with unlikely allies might inspire you to do the same.

Yes, I encountered stigma, but also empathy and understanding - in part, because so many Americans know someone who's been locked up.

When Congolese refugees moved to New York, they brought their old rivalries with them. Then one of them suggested they put their strife on stage.

Whether you live in a house or an apartment, there is likely a little power plant in your basement - a boiler or a furnace - chugging out heat. But heating dwellings one at a time isn't very efficient. Instead, what if a city could generate emissions-free heat at a central location and pipe it directly to everyone's home? It's happening in France, and the results are oh so cozy...

Green energy is generated at a central location, then shuttled through underground pipes to homes in suburban Paris.
