Some of you may have noticed that we had to postpone our upcoming 30 Min Lunch Series: On-site Waste Management: An Untapped Income Source due to unforeseen circumstances.

The good news is that we're ready and excited to exchange knowledge with all of you! Next Wednesday, 4 Nov, we'll break down how you can be at the forefront of adopting a cost-effective, sustainable best practice – managing, unsellable, perishable produce – while strengthening your brand by demonstrating traceability of your inputs and communicating how your produce is sustainably grown.

We felt this was an important topic because customers today know what they want: transparent and ethical supply chains within whichever company they choose to pour their hard-earned money into. The reality is that in today's climate, this is a no-brainer, and in fact, we really should be proponents of this consumer-driven change. But as many of us know, employing green and ethical practices isn’t always the easiest thing to do while also improving our net income.  That being said, call us optimists, but we believe that collectively we can land on ideas which will allow us to achieve this goal - hence the development of this upcoming session.

I recently had a look at the definition of waste by the Cambridge Dictionary, curious as to what it's defined as. This is what it says:

"Unwanted matter or material of any type, especially what is left after useful substances or parts have been removed"

Unfortunately, at some point along the line of history, untouched food - specifically the unwanted bits from farm produce - has been categorized under the bucket of waste. As a company, we couldn't quite understand how this happened - just because it's not edible, does it really mean it's not useful anymore, as per the definition above?

We wanted to prove this theory wrong, which is why we started our on-site food waste recovery system. With any business, optimization is key. As such, in an effort to help farms optimize their operations while reducing cost, we're excited to announce that we're now providing a method that will help farms capture and introduce nutrients from their production waste as a free supplementary and sterile nutrient source. Farms can finally use a fully integrated, closed loop, and self-sustaining nutrient system capable of reducing input and disposal costs.

Hi everyone,

So I'm certain many of us have seen the numbers when it comes to the environmental impact of agriculture. What am I referring to? This:

Almost 1/4 of the global greenhouse gases (of which 14% is linked to animals) comes from agriculture production - FAO

However, the number that is less frequently quoted is the waste production that also contributes to this number. Unfortunately, a lot of this is the result of waste produced by farms. In fact, the current system of fresh produce production and distribution is so wasteful that up to 40-50% of fruits and vegetables are disposed of between harvest and distribution. Now, to us, that number is staggering. 

So, we decided to see what we could do about it. At this point, you're probably thinking, "But wait, soilless farms produce much less waste". Yes, you're absolutely right. But realistically, that's still going to leave an environmental footprint. In addition, it's a hidden cost that isn't talked about enough, but one that many farms then have to bear the burden of. There has to be a better way, no? 

While we realize that there's no silver bullet that will solve the global food waste issue, we wanted to offer a solution that would help soilless farms truly embrace the idea of closed-loop agriculture. Importantly, we've also cracked the code on how to do this while still allowing farms to boost their net income.

When we first started Re-Nuble, we knew that we wanted to make healthy food accessible to all. It was a big deal for us and till today, we remain committed to this, in addition to helping communities and farms around the world reimagine food waste by transforming it into an important nutrient for closed-loop agriculture. 

Very quickly, we began to realize that while many soilless farms were on the same page in terms of goals, they were also facing many challenges in the transition to growing organically. One of the issues that kept cropping up was agriculture inputs such as organic hydroponic nutrients. 

So we dived in deep, and we looked at how we could bring a solution to the table. It took years of research, countless conversations with soilless farms and the various industry stakeholders, and importantly, a lot of patience. But we're pleased to finally share some of our findings in our latest blog post, which you can find below.

Things have been really busy for us here at Re-Nuble. We're ramping things up exponentially as we prepare to support our soilless farms on their journey towards becoming organic growers - exciting times ahead! At the same time, we've also been receiving an outpouring of questions.

As the world of agriculture is shifting towards being more organic, more and more farms are asking how they can stay ahead of the curve. One of these curves is figuring out how to grow organically while still maintaining strong financials. Years of research has taught us that it certainly isn't the easiest path for soilless farms to successfully enter the world of organics. We get it and we hear you. However, there are ways around these challenges.
