The road to the Olympics is paved through rainforest destruction.

The countdown to the 2020 Olympic games is underway and we have just 8 months before the opening ceremonies begin. But while the world cheers the pageantry of the games, we know the truth about the road to the Olympics: it’s literally paved through rainforest destruction.

Our investigations with partners in Indonesia already proved that the Tokyo Olympic venues were built with plywood from tropical rainforests. With your support and pressure, we even got the Olympic organizers to admit just how much rainforest they’ve exploited: 210,400 massive sheets of tropical rainforest plywood have already been used to construct the Olympic stadium and venues. And it’s come at the terrible cost of habitat for critically endangered orangutans.

But the Olympic organizers are choosing to ignore the harm they’ve caused. In fact, for the past year, they’ve been trying to bury the truth by avoiding an internal investigation into their mistakes. The Olympic organizers must take responsibility for the damage that’s been done, admit their sourcing was unsustainable, and commit to protect the rainforests from here on out.

Does Tokyo 2020 want to be known as the “Worst Olympics for the Rainforests”? 

This isn’t a game. We’ve previously exposed how timber and Conflict Palm Oil giant Korindo, a major wood supplier to the Olympics, had not only cut down rainforest in some of the most diverse tropical ecosystems in the world, it was also illegally grabbing community land. And when communities resisted, folks were arrested and even tortured by local police.

Disgusting. Is this what the Olympics really want to be associated with? Tell the Olympic organizers this must end!

The countdown is on: We have just 8 months to make an impact. There’s still time for the Olympic organizers to do the right thing: take accountability, allow the investigation to go forward, and commit to protect the rainforests!

With less than 15,000 clouded leopards in the wild, this vulnerable species and its neighbors need our help. Together, we can put a stop to tropical deforestation and protect the habitat of these rare cats.

It’s undeniable, Charlotte, that clouded leopards are ridiculously cute. See for yourself:

Too little to be called a Great Cat and too small to be a, well, small cat, these beautiful clouded leopards aren’t even a leopard at all! But with fewer than 15,000 clouded leopards remaining in the wild — including, tragically, less than 4,500 Sunda clouded leopards in the Bornean and Sumatran rainforests — they are vulnerable.

Sadly, it also goes without question, that the rainforest habitat they call home is disappearing as companies destroy forests for products that will be used in the next Olympic Games.

Without you, rhinos might not have a safe place to live

Just a month ago, the last known wild Sumatran rhino in Malaysia died. There are only 80 Sumatran rhinos left in the wild and now they can only be found in Indonesia. As their rainforest habitat continues to be destroyed, these rhinos are at real risk of extinction in the wild. And right now, the rainforests they call home are at grave risk. There’s no time left to lose.

That’s because Big Agribusiness is slashing and burning rhino habitat, all so they can profit from Conflict Palm Oil.

We know we can’t save the rainforest in one day — but we CAN all chip in now to show Big Agribusiness that we’re not going to tolerate their rainforest-destroying greed.

2019 has been an incredible year filled with so many triumphs, but also so many heart-breaking losses.

The peat fires that raged in Sumatra — deliberately set to speed up clear cutting for palm oil and pulp plantations — were the worst since 2015. The last Sumatran rhino in Malaysia died and there are estimated to be only 80 left in Indonesia. And over 3,500 square miles of forest were scorched in the Amazon in 2019 alone. 

At times, it’s hard to stay positive when so many species are at risk of extinction, when so many acres of tropical forest have disappeared and the giant corporations behind the destruction are raking in billions in profit.

The peat fires that raged in Sumatra — deliberately set to speed up clear cutting for palm oil and pulp plantations — were the worst since 2015. The last Sumatran rhino in Malaysia died and there are estimated to be only 80 left in Indonesia. And over 3,500 square miles of forest were scorched in the Amazon in 2019 alone.

Last month I reached out to you about a great opportunity — our partnership with FreeWill to provide supporters like you with a free and easy way to  create your own legal will.

There’s so much happening in the world right now, from fires in the Amazon and Australia to deforestation in Indonesia. It’s so important to me  to be able to support my loved ones and the causes I care the most about at such a critical time.

Right now, a devastating climate disaster is underway in Australia. At least 27 people have been killed in the Australian fires, thousands have fled their homes, and there is a very real chance that the death toll will rise. 

Estimates for the number of animals lost reach as high as a BILLION. Up to 25,000 koalas may have been wiped out by these fires, with many more badly burned and suffering, and it may spell extinction for the species.

But in the wake of this climate emergency, one corporation is actively working to expand coal mining in Australia. The Adani Group’s coal mine would be one of the largest in the world, spewing an estimated 705 million tonnes of fossil fuel pollution into our atmosphere every year.

Coal mining is a leading cause of climate chaos worldwide, and Adani’s coal is directly adding fuel to the wildfires and drought in Australia. So who could possibly get behind coal expansion right now? The short answer: Liberty Mutual. 

The good news is, thanks to your support, Liberty Mutual adopted a new policy on coal insurance just last month. The not so good news is that their policy has a loophole the size of one of the world’s largest proposed coal mines. 

Liberty Mutual is refusing to end its support of new coal projects, and rule out Adani’s mine specifically. What’s happening in Australia is absolutely tragic, and it’s a terrifying reality of the climate chaos to come if we don’t keep fossil fuels in the ground. 

More than 60 companies and insurers have refused to work on Adani because of its role in fueling climate destruction. Tell Liberty Mutual to close the loophole on coal and rule out Adani.

We’ve caught this Candy Giant red-handed, fueling the destruction of Indonesia’s Leuser Ecosystem, but it's refused to make a public commitment to protect these endangered forests.

Demand Mondel?z take responsibility for the bitter secret in its sweet treats!

Local communities depend on the Leuser Ecosystem for their livelihoods and for keeping devastating floods in check; wildlife found nowhere else in the world — and already fighting to survive — call these forests home; and we all depend on rainforests to help keep our climate stable.

Candy Giant? Pfft...you’d have to be a Candy Troll to sacrifice so much for such short-sighted gain. But that’s just what Mondel?z has been doing! Mondel?z has been fueling the destruction of one part of the world to profit off another. That’s cynical, it’s tragic, and it’s wrong.

Just a few months ago, our undercover work exposed a serious threat to the future of the last few hundred remaining Sumatran tigers: an illegal Conflict Palm Oil plantation inside a critically important wildlife reserve in the Leuser Ecosystem. And today, fires are threatening tiger habitat.

I'm writing you with some urgent and terrible news: We just found out that our least favorite insurance company, Liberty Mutual, is backing the destructive Trans Mountain pipeline. The Trans Mountain pipeline cuts right through Indigenous land, violating treaty rights, and threatening the health of community members. In other words, Liberty Mutual is directly violating the liberty of Indigenous people.

In order to build any pipeline or fossil fuel project you need permits, insurance, and money. The Trans Mountain pipeline has the money and the permits, so we have to stop insurers like Liberty Mutual from taking the steps to back this project. Just yesterday, the news broke that Zurich, Trans Mountain''s lead insurer, is dropping the project. Now it''s time to push Liberty Mutual to follow suit.

Will you help us flood Liberty Mutual with more than 25,000 messages opposing their backing of this project? We only have a short window to stop Liberty Mutual from renewing its deal with Trans Mountain, and we need your help.

Today is World Elephant Day: send a powerful message of love and support to the last remaining Sumatran elephants!

I want you to imagine a baby elephant, lumbering along in the shadow of her mom, walking through a lush rainforest. It's a path they've taken many times before, for generations even. You see, Sumatran elephants migrate every year in search of food and water sources. 

Following in the footsteps of the herd's matriarch, these gentle giants follow ancient paths learned from their mothers and grandmothers that came before. 

But today, Conflict Palm Oil plantations have destroyed more and more of these critical migration trails - leading these endangered elephants to the edge of extinction.

Fires are raging from the West Coast of the U.S. to the Amazon to the forests of Indonesia. Hurricane Laura devastated parts of the Gulf Coast, where they're still recovering from the last climate disaster. Iowa was hit by a storm with winds matching the intensity and damage of an inland hurricane. Heatwaves are being felt, and records broken, from the U.S. to the Arctic.

Bottom line: People, and wildlife, are losing their lives and their homes all in the name of one thing: MONEY. 

Big banks are fueling the climate crisis, and Chase has poured over a quarter trillion dollars into fossil fuels over the last four years. It's time for Chase and its CEO, Jamie Dimon, to feel the same heat they're causing you: Tell them to end all coal financing NOW. 

Power plants are the single largest source of carbon pollution in the world. And the pollution from coal-fired power plants kills communities and cooks our climate.

The RESULT: Fire and hurricane seasons are getting longer and more intense. Communities, more often Black, Brown, and low-income, on the frontlines of these disasters continue to lose lives and their homes. Indigenous people's rights continue to be violated and their land used without consent. 

Chase's weak coal policy did NOT stop it from spending $6.1 billion on coal companies from 2017 to 2019, and $269 billion on all fossil fuels. In February, Chase made another commitment to move away from coal, and Arctic oil and gas, but it has some major loopholes: the company committed to stop financing NEW coal projects but still finances many of the companies continuing to mine and burn coal. We need YOU to help us make sure Chase doesn't skirt its commitment, and responsibilities, to a liveable climate, Alexander.

Chase's own economists warn of the climate risk it's bankrolling, and some of its European peers have already committed to exiting coal. Chase is profiting from your suffering despite clear warnings. TODAY: Tell Chase to stop being two-faced and cut out coal completely for people and planet.

The Sumatran elephant is the smallest elephant in the world, and there are fewer than 1,700 left in the wild, Alexander.

Where do we even begin, Charlotte?

Right now, Black communities across the country are being disproportionately hit by the COVID pandemic, with a mortality rate more than twice their white counterparts. Cadbury, Sweet Tarts, Starburst, Dove, Twix, Skittles, Butterfinger, Kit Kat, and M&M's all have their own twists on sweetening, souring, gummying, and all-around stuffing of candy and chocolate. At no other time is this franken-bunny thinking on display more than at Easter.

Unfortunately, no matter what shape or flavor they produce, candy giants Mars, Mondelez, Nestl?, and Ferrero can't hide the rainforest destruction in their candy.

That's because ingredients like conflict palm oil, soy, and cocoa are destroying the world's remaining rainforests. While candy wrappers and packaging rely on pulp and paper - another forest destroyer. Ugggghhhhh, right?

How can something so sweet be so destructive?! Can't we just have something nice?

It doesn't have to be this way! Palm oil, soy, cocoa, and paper don't have to come from the irresponsible and tragic destruction of rainforests. 

Rainforests are home to Indigenous communities and to countless endangered species found nowhere else on Earth. Our survival - yours and mine - depends on keeping forests standing. Heck, rainforests stabilize our climate AT A TIME WE NEED IT MOST.

Forcing consumers to choose between rainforests and sweets is no choice at all and candymakers know this... so they bury the truth in candy, chocolate, and pastel packaging, collect their profits, and hope no one notices.

Easter generates 2.4 BILLION dollars in oh-so-sweet profits for these corporate giants. It's time the candy corporations stop giving consumers such terrible non-choices.

Rainforests are one of the best defenses against the climate crisis -- which is another reason why we need to keep forests standing.

Have you ever heard of the tree of life? That's because forests are life. We all need them to survive: from the air we breathe to the water we drink and the food we eat.

But rainforests do something critical for us that we don't see: They're our most important solution to the climate crisis! Rainforests regulate global temperatures and absorb massive amounts of carbon out of the atmosphere - one of the key drivers of climate change - and store it safely underground.

When Big Agribusiness destroys and burns our rainforests, they release all of that stored carbon into the atmosphere - AND they've destroyed the very trees that would have continued to store carbon in the future. Right now, fires are raging across California and the West causing devastation to peoples' lives, burning entire neighborhoods, and destroying redwood and sequoia trees that have been alive since the fall of Rome. But what happens when the fires end? 

I want you to meet Melinda, from Cloverdale, CA. Melinda lives just a few miles from the devastatingly historic Tubbs fire that caused unprecedented destruction and loss of life. Within two weeks of the fire, while her friends and neighbors were in mourning, Liberty Mutual sent her a notice that her home insurance was being withdrawn because she lived in a high-risk area for wildfires. The company left her family vulnerable after years of paying for protection from this very nightmare -- a nightmare that Liberty Mutual itself helped to create.

Today, at its Annual General Meeting, Chase will share its plans for the coming year that will impact your future and the future of the planet.

I'm writing you with some urgent and terrible news: We just found out that our least favorite insurance company, Liberty Mutual, is backing the destructive Trans Mountain pipeline. The Trans Mountain pipeline cuts right through Indigenous land, violating treaty rights, and threatening the health of community members. In other words, Liberty Mutual is directly violating the liberty of Indigenous people.

In order to build any pipeline or fossil fuel project you need permits, insurance, and money. The Trans Mountain pipeline has the money and the permits, so we have to stop insurers like Liberty Mutual from taking the steps to back this project. Just yesterday, the news broke that Zurich, Trans Mountain''s lead insurer, is dropping the project. Now it''s time to push Liberty Mutual to follow suit.

Will you help us flood Liberty Mutual with more than 25,000 messages opposing their backing of this project? We only have a short window to stop Liberty Mutual from renewing its deal with Trans Mountain, and we need your help.

We don't have to tell you why pipelines need to be stopped, but Liberty Mutual needs to hear from you before they take steps to double down on the climate crisis and harming First Nations.

I want to break this down for you: when you hear that we have less than 10 years to take significant action to combat this climate crisis, it doesn't mean that we can start in 10 years. It means we need to have already taken major climate actions by the end of the decade. That's why this is so urgent, and we need action NOW. 

We're experiencing the climate crisis right now: hurricanes in the South and massive fires in the West -- and it's getting worse every day.

No matter how busy things get, there's always time to say thanks to supporters like you who make our work possible.

From the fires that raged across the western US to the extreme fires in Indonesia, the Amazon, and Siberia, to the violence and push back against activists protesting systemic racism to the global pandemic that has disproportionately impacted Black and Brown communities, 2020 has had a heavy toll on people and on the planet.

Do you know what it means to be "on the frontline" in our fight to keep forests standing? It means to stand face to face with your enemy. It means to be vulnerable. And at times, it means to risk your own life.
