The Traqr - is a compact and lightweight target, plated with a cluster of active markers, which provides positional and orientational data in real-time.

January 2020 User of the Month

Fix a slice, lengthen a drive, improve ball striking consistency or turn a bogey into a par with fewer strokes on the putting green — there are countless ways to improve a golf game. Penn State’s Golf Teaching and Research Center (GTRC) can easily pinpoint errors that occur in a golfer’s swing.

The Qualisys Golf Performance Web Report drives the educational component to their practice and research. The facility utilizes resources from multiple departments, including the areas of Biomechanics as well as Player Development and Coaching. The program allows both players and instructors to interact with each other based on the result-driven coursework.

Advancing Education in Golf Biomechanics

Designed to advance golf research and instruction, the Golf Teaching and Research Center (GTRC) at Penn State University opened its doors in November 2009. GTRC is a unique golf teaching and research venture. It provides a cutting edge, high-quality learning environment for students in the PGA Golf Management program, part of the Recreation, Park and Tourism Management undergraduate degree program.

GTRC is equipped with some of the most advanced tools and technologies available to the golf industry. It offers its students a new perspective on golf and golf instruction giving them an advantage once graduated.

In addition to the 8-camera motion capture system, the GTRC boasts a three dimensional Doppler radar ball-flight machine that predicts the trajectory and distance of the ball, a putting green, and club-fitting equipment. Being indoors, practice and learning becomes a year-round possibility.

In addition to player development and instruction, the Penn State Golf Teaching and Research Center is dedicated to conducting relevant research that focuses on improving player performance. By combining university resources (PGA Golf Management program, Department of Kinesiology, and Penn State Athletics) with golf industry leaders, they are able to collaborate on innovative research projects and product testing.

Eric Handley | Director, Golf Teaching and Research Center

Eric oversees all of the functions of the Golf Teaching & Research Center, including research projects, player development programs, club fittings, golf instruction classes for the Penn State PGA Golf Management students, and detailed swing analysis for the general public. Prior to arriving at Penn State in 2005, Eric earned his Master’s Degree from NC State University while also serving as a Golf Professional at private country clubs in Durham, NC and Duluth, GA.

Dr. Samuel Masters | Associate Director for Research

Samuel is a faculty member with a dual appointment with the Department of Kinesiology and the Golf Teaching and Research Center. He received a B.S. in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Tulsa and started his graduate education with Penn State in Kinesiology in 2012. His expertise extends from the analysis of sport movement to computational biomechanics.

Dan Merrell | Head of Player Development and Coaching

Dan Merrell attended The Pennsylvania State University, majoring in PGA Golf Management. Pursuing an internship in the program, Dan discovered his love of teaching, and soon after, he was offered the Assistant General Manager role at the academy to go along with his teaching role.

We are happy to invite you to the first Qualisys Webinar about our new marker set for Sports.

A Sports marker set is now supported by our QTM skeleton solver. This marker set uses biomechanical definitions so that the data can be easily and directly analyzed in an anatomical manner.

It allows users to get skeleton data in real-time and file mode in QTM so they can stream it or export it to various third-party software.

The webinar will focus on the features and the workflow regarding the QTM skeleton solver with the Sports marker set during a live demo.

	Vincent Fohanno (Ph.D.) Research Engineer Vincent is responsible for the work done on the skeleton solver at Qualisys since 2015 He works closely with both the software and application teams which led to the launch of the QTM skeleton solver with the Animation marker set in 2019 and the addition of the Sports marker set in 2020.
