Plus, new patterns and a survey request from Pttrns.????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
This month, we have questions: Is AI better at design than U and I? Is an app better if it does one thing well than try to do everything? Also, what the heck do you want from us?
Patterns is yours. Tell us how you want it.
Feeling opinionated, moderately brave, and click-happy? We'd love to hear from design minds like yours. We want to make sure this newsletter speaks to you, which is why we want to listen first. So, please, take our survey??

Two new?patterns that do one thing well
Two new apps have emerged on the Pttrns site: Carpe and Brief. Check out our quick review of why these two apps combine simplicity and laser-focused functionality for an enjoyable (and eminently usable and useful) user experience.?

Or if you want to skip us talking about these apps and just see the patterns in their glory, we got you, fam:

The bots are coming for our jerbs?
Ok, deep breaths. If you haven't heard. At the end of July. There was a tweet. From a designer. Who created a Figma plugin called "Designer." That could design an app from raw text. We're not hyperventilating, are we?
Reactions ranged from "what the actual ****" to "this is the logical next step for template design."
Jonathan Lee at UX Design Collective was quick to point out that this isn't the first time we've all embraced automation. And that we focused on the scary magic of the plugin, "Designer" when we should be applauding its designer-creator Jordan Singer who discerned "how to harness the technology behind the keyboard"?
Laura Busche at Dribbble had a more feel-good approach to the panic of bots designing us out of our livelihoods. Her argument? AI will never match the truly-human qualities of good design. She even calls out 20 of those too-human qualities that software will never replicate. Things like taste, imagination, and even imperfection.?
One more thing we can do that software can't? Breathe a sigh of relief.

This week, we''re rekindling the conversation. Yes, we''re admitting we did start the fire. So gather ''round.
Hello from the Pttrns side Can you hear us over the Adele worm we just planted in your ear? We're sorry. For that and for not reaching out more. Despite our lapse in communication, the Pttrns community remains active and strong, and we thank you all for being a part of it. We know we need to do our part to make it even stronger and more vibrant.?Read more
You''ve got... Drama? What happens when you set out to reinvent email and you develop yourself right into the teeth of bureaucracy and monopoly? The team at Basecamp found out exactly what happens when Apple rejected an update to its new email client, Hey, a few weeks ago.?
The Verge has a good summary of the many issues at play here, but the biggest is Apple's rule that forces developers of paid apps to use Apple payment tools for in-app purchases and sign-ups. Oh, and subsequently give up a non-negotiable 30% of revenue. On top of that, this rule is inconsistently applied to apps like Netflix, Google, Salesforce, and Nintendo, as Basecamp CEO Jason Fried pointed out in a letter posted to Hey's website.
Two updates later, Apple has softened a bit, definitively approved Hey, and the dust has settled. For now. That hasn't stopped the design community from having a little fun with the spectacle. Most notable was Thinko Animation Studio's creation of Bye, "the first email service to automatically respond with an insult, and then delete every email sent to you." Sign us up?
Hey (see what we did there), just want to see what the design looks like and don''t care about all the hubbub? Here''s a link from Basecamp on Hey''s design. Also, check out Hey on Pttrns here.
