Returning to the workplace following lockdown will no doubt be met with mixed responses. Some employees may be keen to return, but others may have concerns.
With absence management policies unlikely to be suitable in the context of Covid-19, HR professionals need to think about adjustments for the post-lockdown return, and be ready to respond and accommodate individual circumstances on a case-by-case basis.
The characters below may be familiar to you
Shielding Shona received a shielding letter, as she has severe respiratory problems, and has been self-isolating since the start of lockdown.
Protective Pete is fit and well but is concerned about returning to work as his partner is pregnant. He doesn’t want to risk picking up the virus and taking it home. He also cares for his vulnerable and elderly mother.
Fearful Ffion is worried about travelling by tube for work and has expressed strong concerns about the risks of working on a production line. She is worried sufficient care is not being taken to protect her health and safety.
Struggling Stan has three children of primary school age and is unable to return to the workplace until all of his children are back at school.
Symptomatic Steve has been contacted by the NHS test and trace service and is required to self-isolate for the next 14 days.
Jet-set Josephine booked a trip to New Zealand for a family wedding pre-lockdown. She will need to self-isolate for 14 days when she returns.
Do these issues seem likely to arise in your organisation? If so, why not join our webinar, "Reluctant Returners and Absence Management in the Context of Covid-19" where we will explore the types of absence you might see arising, the adjustments to polices and processes you may need to consider, and how to implement and communicate changes to staff.

Accelerating development and performance with a coaching culture
Why your leaders and managers need on-demand coaching now
Your employees are facing challenges they’ve never experienced before. The focus for many organisations is now about recalibrating and structuring the business for success. Ensuring your leaders and managers are best placed to drive the workforce forward and understand the importance of engagement and productivity is a critical requirement. In today’s difficult climate, the ability to respond to new challenges with agility and compassion, meeting business objectives whilst motivating and inspiring employees, is crucial.
Join our upcoming webinar, ''Accelerating Development and Performance with a Coaching Culture'' on 24th September at 2pm.
Our host, Jacques Quinio, Head of Leadership Development, Assessment and Coaching will explore what’s new in coaching: how it will be used by organisations for 2020 and beyond, and what makes on-demand coaching different. Plus, hear from both coachee and business leader to understand why now is the time to implement a coaching culture in your organisation.

Now’s the perfect opportunity to redefine your benefits strategy
There’s plenty of long-held evidence to show that helping your employees stay happy and healthy in body and mind will lead to better engagement and, hence, better business outcomes: in terms of attraction, retention, productivity and profits.

For more insights from the survey and Gallagher’s experts register today for the Reward & Benefits Redefined: 2020 vision for the future webinar on Thursday 22nd October at 2pm.

Redundancy: Legal and practical complexities
Thursday 10 September | 11am BST
Register today
Hi Amelia,
With redundancy exercises likely to be increasingly common over the coming months, it is crucial that organisations have the confidence and expertise to deal with the tricky issues that can arise. Given the backdrop of the furlough scheme, there has arguably never been a more important time to understand the legal and practical complexities of implementing a redundancy process.
Join Max Winthrop, partner and head of the employment law team at Short, Richardson & Forth, as he navigates us through the common tricky issues and unchartered territory that we now find ourselves in, including:
carrying out redundancy processes remotely;
taking selection decisions in pools of furloughed/non-furloughed employees;
determining criteria where attendance and performance may be a factor;
considering individual redundancy appeals; and,
fulfilling obligations relating to suitable alternative employment.
This one-hour live webinar includes a Q&A session. Register today to submit your questions to the speaker.

Everyone’s referring to ‘the new normal’ but what do we actually mean and what are the practical implications for HR and L&D teams?
This Personnel Today event, in partnership with SumTotal, will address the issues by looking at how employers are changing their approach to traverse the myriad challenges created by coronavirus. Hear from industry analysts Fosway and fellow HR leaders from different industries and company sizes talk about their approaches in dealing with the ‘New Normal’ as the crisis evolves. From this discussion, you’ll hear:
How HR leaders plan for anticipated workplace change through the pandemic
Strategies to onboard new starters remotely and tips how to make it work
How to retain staff in the new normal – would a stronger focus on skills development close the gap?
Managing workers who experience rapid change in their personal situations, affecting work scheduling and productivity – staff with childcare challenges when schools close or lessons limited
How leaders utilise collaborative technology solutions to support the wellbeing and productivity of both in-office and remote workers
Why strategic planning is becoming more agile, with sessions now occurring monthly
How leaders are preparing to manage the wellbeing of people classed as vulnerable to coronavirus
Why it’s important to developing skills so that gaps in the workforce can be covered by others.

Future Planning Downloadable Guide for Employers
The fall-out from the COVID-19 pandemic has already had severe ramifications for many businesses, but also created opportunities for agile businesses that have been able to take advantage of the shift in human behaviour and the ever-changing landscape.
Our downloadable guide is not like most papers produced by law firms that set out what you can do now to protect your business during the lockdown. Instead, we look to the future, how your business can protect itself and prosper in the new age. How your business can do more than survive in the post-apocalyptic world. How your business can thrive.
We focus on a clear change in employee behaviour, that has been evolving over the last two decades but that has been accelerated by the pandemic, which will put pressure on employers to implement revolutionary changes to their strategy.
In our guide, we identify practical points to consider when either requiring employees to return to the office or continuing a working from home policy. We look at the knock-on effects of those changes and how they will impact your business.
Key insights include:
The Impact of the Pandemic on the UK Economy
The Changing Landscape From Which Businesses Will Need to Trade Moving Forwards.
Short & Medium Term Cost-Saving Measures and Stream Lining Businesses for the New Age
Occupational Health When Working From Home
Working From Home and Flexible Working Requests
Health & Safety in the Work Place in the New World
Managing People From Their Dining Room Tables
Mental Health in the Work Place

When was the last time you conducted an audit of your employee benefit schemes?
At Aon, we think it’s important to regularly review your benefits schemes to ensure they are fit-for-purpose, especially in the midst of COVID-19. But it doesn’t have to be time-consuming – we can provide a complimentary no obligation benefits audit, which will provide insight on any red flags which may need attention and provide suggestions for where your benefits could improve across all company benefits, from defined contribution pensions to life assurance and medical insurance, as well as communication and engagement.
Traditionally your annual review of your benefits focuses mainly on provider price. Our review and audit is much wider:
Support during COVID-19 – Your provider’s stance and terms
Ensure your firm adheres to applicable legislation changes
Ensure benefits are fit for purpose
Identify potential cost savings – advisor and provider
Arrange your complimentary Aon Benefits Audit now >
The process is straightforward, and information is obtained directly from your providers via your letter of authority so there is minimal work for you. We use our plan design auditing tools to assess your benefits against your peers and the wider market. We identify benchmarking, compliance and legislation issues along with any cost savings – advisor or provider. Then our full report is delivered by experts and gives you the insights you need to ensure your benefits are compliant, engaging and cost effective.

The emerging people strategy and what it means for HR
HR and people teams have barely had a chance to catch their breath. Over the past few months, HR leaders have faced challenges unlike ever before, as we’ve tried to take stock of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the workplace.
This Personnel Today webinar, in association with Sage People looks at how HR leaders are adapting in this new world. What does it mean for managing workforces today? What are the most pressing issues for People leaders now and tomorrow?
Editor Rob Moss is joined by work trends expert Sarah Hulsey from Sage, and Mark Withers, HR and OD consultant, to discuss all this and more. By the end of the webinar, attendees will understand more about:
What the future of HR strategy looks like today
What the priorities are for HR leaders, immediately and long term
The three biggest shifts needed in your HR strategy as a result
How other HR teams are coping and responding.
This 60-minute webinar features a live Q&A session for the audience to submit their questions to our panel.

You’ll enjoy hearing all the top tips from leading industry experts, the most innovative trends and the best strategies that will keep you in the know.
If that’s not enough to catch your interest, these are the events which you won’t want to miss out on...
Opening keynote, Tim Robertson, UK compensation and benefits lead at Microsoft will be presenting on HR and the new normal at 10am on Monday 5 October. He will also analyse what the accelerated future is going to look like and explore the key trends emerging in the broader reward market.
Shaun Davis, global director of safety, health and wellbeing and sustainability at Royal Mail will be leading the session on safeguarding employee mental health in turbulent times, on Wednesday 7 October at 11am. Additionally lined up, we have Martin Power, head of mental health and wellbeing at KP Snacks, who will be joining us on Thursday 8 October at 2:30pm to discuss future proofing workplace wellbeing strategies. Martin will demonstrate the importance of prioritising mental wellbeing, the most convenient way to develop a roadmap for future success and how to adopt a people-focused approach in challenging and turbulent environments.
Invest in your organisation and take away some great concepts to help adapt your HR, reward and benefits strategies to align with the new normal.

How agile HR leadership drives resilience
With profound disruption and challenges, HR and People leaders have had to steer organisations through unprecedented change, and adapt and pivot repeatedly as a result.
This is despite the fact that, before the global pandemic, less than a third of HR leaders felt they were organised for agility, speed and adaptability.
This Personnel Today webinar, in association with Sage People, will examine the strategies and interventions used by HR to aid business resilience and drive recovery in the business.
Register now to reserve your place at the event where Mark Withers, founder of Mightwaters Consulting and Jessica Fuhl, senior manager at Sage People join Rob Moss, editor of Personnel Today, to discuss:
Top tips for how HR and People leaders can lead with business resilience and agility
What this means in practice, and where HR leaders can begin
The role cloud HR technology play
How HR and People leaders can pivot and flex as needed as a result.
By the end of the webinar, attendees will come away armed with information on the next steps they can take to become a stronger, more adaptable organisation.

Reengaging your people: Why employers are opting for fairness over flexibility
In many organisations, during lockdown, we saw the rapid and wholesale expansion of certain wellbeing benefits, specifically virtual GPs and mental health focused apps and services. It represented a big step in the right direction: that of equality and diversity. In short, fairness.
Leaders were realising en masse that when people strategy is rooted in employee wellbeing, your workplace will work better and you can face your future with confidence. It’s what the minority have known for a long time. It’s taken a pandemic for the majority to acknowledge this.
Download Gallagher’s 2020 Benefits Strategy and Benchmarking Survey executive summary for insights you need to design and deliver a better workplace, one that can weather the current storm.

In association with
Remote working: top tips for wellbeing and connection (webinar)
The pandemic has been tough on your employees. Not only have they endured multiple lockdowns that have cut off access to their support networks, many would have also experienced the uncertainty that came with furlough and constant reminders of the UK’s dire economic outlook in the news.
This has all had a catastrophic effect on employees’ wellbeing, with mental health charity Mind recently warning of a “second pandemic” of mental ill-health.
This Personnel Today webinar, in association with BHSF Connect, will examine why looking after remote workers’ mental health and wellbeing remains vital even as we emerge from the pandemic.
Personnel Today’s HR and wellbeing editor Ashleigh Webber will be joined by BHSF regional manager for the south Karl Taylor; Tracey Paxton, managing director of The Resilience Company, and; CJ Bedford, director of people and performance at Wiser to discuss:
The effect long-term remote working has on employee wellbeing
The evidence base for looking after employees’ mental health
What the appropriate support mechanisms are and how to put them in place
Top tips for maintaining employee engagement and connection
The free, hour-long webinar will include a Q&A session for the audience to send questions to our panel.
