Hello friend,

You’ve heard us say over and over that PBL teaches much more than what’s on traditional tests. Now, a Gallup Survey shows that most teachers agree.

Specifically, 68% of teachers indicated that Project Based Learning offers a good measure of student learning — versus only 12% of teachers who indicated the same about standardized tests.

Parents who responded to the survey are big believers as well. Just 13% of parents say it’s “very important” for their child to do well on standardized tests, while 59% say it’s very important for their children to work on a project with real-world applications.

There’s so much in this survey that confirms what we know and love about PBL. We’ve highlighted some of the best bits for you here!

Dear friend,

Our world has changed - permanently. And we can't know exactly how, but I believe it will make educators realize (or be reminded) that many things weren't working in the old system. This is a "teachable moment," and perhaps a tipping point for change.

What lessons can we learn? I believe a clear one is this: Project Based Learning, now more than ever, is what will help us meet the moment.

PBL is truly a means of keeping kids engaged in learning and growing now, and a key to fostering the creativity, initiative, and resilience they'll need to thrive in our rapidly changing world.

As an organization, we've been thinking deeply about how we can support this shift, and we look forward to sharing some new ideas and resources in the coming months. For now, let me offer 4 ideas about why PBL is especially relevant in these times.

Taking a stand against racism

We are outraged by the recent killing of George Floyd, the continual killing of Black people, and the ravaging consequences of centuries of racism and inequality on Black people in this country.

This continued violence against Black people and the systemic and racist inequalities in this country are intolerable.

Given our organization's racial equity imperative, we are called to an even stronger commitment to equity within our organization and to confront racism and anti-Blackness in our educational system.

We believe that how we act and what we say in this defining moment will determine a vision for an anti-racist future. We are taking a stand against the perpetual state of systemic violence against Black people in this country. We stand in solidarity with those who are protesting in our cities and neighborhoods.

As educators committed to the power of Project Based Learning to transform the lives of young people, we know many Black students right now are wondering if their lives matter. We are committed to creating education systems that value and lift up Black children.

We believe that together we can change the systems that are not equitably serving all people in our country. We are in this until a better future becomes our reality.

We know how hard you’re working to support your students and communities right now – ensuring their safety and health, while encouraging their continued learning. During this challenging time, please know that we are in this together with you, and we want to be of service.

Our team at PBLWorks is here for you. And we remain laser-focused on supporting you in providing quality Project Based Learning for your students.

We also want to update you on how we’re approaching the current COVID-19 situation.

In response to your needs right now, we’re developing and sharing some timely resources, including blog posts on remote learning tools and adaptable project ideas. We’ll continue to offer more solutions here in the weeks ahead. Please reach out with any additional requests you may have at info@pblworks.org.

Many of our partners have expressed an interest in working with us virtually. Well, we’re on it! Our team is distributed across the country, so we’re already fluent with digital collaboration. Look for a shift from our in-person workshops and services to a virtual format very soon – as well as some other exciting new online learning opportunities.

The Breaking Bias project was launched as a joint venture between three high schools in Missouri, New York, and Massachusetts - with the goal "to listen and learn from one another to better equip ourselves to disarm bias in the future."

Our new online course Adapting Your First Project gives you a shortcut to creating standards-based PBL units for your students.

In this course, you'll master the process of adapting an existing Gold Standard PBL unit for your own students and context - both for the classroom or remote learning.

You'll choose one of 72 standards-based PBL units from our library of projects, and learn step-by-step how to creating engaging and meaningful learning for your students. You'll also explore how PBL can be a powerful tool for educational equity.

At the end of this 8-week course, you'll have a complete project that you can put into action right away with your students.

Optional graduate-level professional development credit is available.
