Remember that "term" finish line? You are now late term, which is kind of like being late to class-not generally a huge deal. Don't worry-many first babies are late.

- Once your baby arrives, she will get her first test, called the APGAR. The nurse or midwife will examine five conditions: baby's color, heart rate, reflexes, muscle tone and breathing. The baby gets a 0, 1 or 2 for each of these, for a total possible score of 10. It's given at one minute old and again at five minutes old. It really helps your medical team know that your baby is perfectly healthy.
- As baby loses all of their vernix, their skin may become dry.

-
Feeling real contractions yet? Unlike Braxton-Hicks contractions, real contractions increase in intensity and length and get closer together as they progress. A contraction timer app can help you monitor whether or not they are really getting more frequent and longer.
-
Another sign of labor starting is having your water break. This is not usually a gush of fluid (though that can happen), but a slow trickling down your leg.
-
Your doc may set you up with bi-weekly non-stress tests to make sure all is going smoothly inside.
If your baby arrived in the past week, here are some of our top tips for your first week with baby.
Try This
Skin-to-skin (more adorably known as kangaroo care) is the ultimate win-win newborn trick. It helps baby adapt to the world outside the womb, makes breastfeeding easier and reduces postpartum depression.
So is it complicated? Not at all. When your baby is just in a diaper, lie them on your bare chest and drape a swaddle over both of you. And remember: any caregiver can give this a shot!
Self-Care: Baby Blues
Find yourself crying over the smallest thing? Most (like 70- to 80-percent of new moms) experience mood swings after childbirth. Your estrogen and progesterone levels plummet in the two days after birth, and your mood can go up, down and all around with them.
What can you do? Ride the wave. Don't give yourself a hard time about the tears. Have patience with yourself and remember that it will pass. Try to talk to a good friend or your partner about what this all feels like for you and ask for help.

. FUN FACT .
Oxytocin means swift birth in Greek, okus for "swift" and tokos for "birth."

WTF Is Cluster Feeding?
So your baby just stopped eating and is crying again immediately. You've tried burping, swaying, swaddling, but nothing will quiet them except more milk. This is called cluster feeding, which can feel like a cluster-something-else to the nursing mom. Week-old babies sometimes want to nurse for 20 minutes or more every hour for hours on end, particularly in the late afternoons or evenings.
Lactation consultants recommend frequent nursing during this time. The schedules and regimented feedings can wait till baby is over a month old.
