Dear Daniel,
Today is World Refugee Day, a day to recognize the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their homes.
Nearly 80 million people are currently displaced as a result of conflict, persecution and natural disaster. From Bangladesh to South Sudan, from hurricanes to famine, there are now more people around the world who are displaced than at any other time in recorded history.
Half of those experiencing displacement are women and girls, who also face the threat of discrimination and violence while they flee, and in the refugee camps where they settle.
Oxfam is helping to meet the emergency needs of refugees, who are now facing the added crisis of COVID-19 in overcrowded camps without enough clean water or health facilities, by:
- Distributing soap and emergency kits in Zimbabwe
- Working on hygiene promotion and good handwashing in the Central African Republic
- Advocating for an end to Canada's arms deal with Saudi Arabia, one of the warring parties in Yemen, to give Yemenis a chance to stop the rapid spread of COVID-19
- Providing clean water, toilets and soap to vulnerable communities in Iraq
Thanks to your unwavering support, Oxfam has been able to tackle the spread of COVID-19 in these communities, and ensure they're better equipped to handle this crisis as a number of COVID-19 cases have now been confirmed.
In Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh, Oxfam set out to create safer handwashing stations to avoid the transmission of the virus. Using an approach to designing water and sanitation facilities called "social architecture," communities have been part of the design process from the get-go.
In the creation of these foot pedal handwashing stations, specific input was sought from women and girls.
".This process helped girls take charge of a piece of their lives. The Rohingya refugees have experienced so much trauma and loss, the girls stuck in the camps have almost no space to exercise their minds and their power. We invited them to.design something that would benefit them and their families."
- Enamul Hoque, Coordinator for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in the Rohingya camps
Nur has been a key player in helping with the design of the recently installed Contactless Handwashing Device in the Rohingya camp. Like her, other Rohingya refugees have started using the machine to frequently wash their hands.
".In this emergency, the handwashing stations will almost certainly save lives. They [the women] will be the superheroes."
- Nur, Rohingya refugee
Since the beginning of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Oxfam has sought to maintain its pre-existing lifesaving programs while launching new efforts in 62 countries to respond to the spread of the virus. This would not be possible without you!
The care and concern you've shown for people around the world is inspiring and continues to fuel our drive to tackle this virus and stand together with refugees - today and every day.
With gratitude,
Christine Martin
