Researcher Profile
Francis Y. Lee, MD, PhD
OREF is pleased to announce that Dr. Francis Lee has been named the new Chair of the OREF Research Grants Committee. Dr. Lee received several grants from OREF early in his career, including a $15,000 Resident Research Grant. "It was a relatively small award, but it was meaningful that OREF was willing to invest in me as a scientist. I was able to do research, present my work and publish a paper. That grant really formed a solid foundation to build on, and OREF was crucial in my development as a clinician scholar."

COVID-19: Shelter in Place and Non-Essential Work Restrictions Impact Current and Future Grant Recipients
OREF is deeply concerned for the health and safety of its grant recipients. We understand that the public health emergency for COVID-19 has impacted nearly every aspect of our lives, including the ability of many of our grant recipients to continue their research as clinical studies are unable to meet enrollment targets and many labs are closed except for essential work such as keeping cell lines alive.
The OREF Grants team wants to assure our recipient community that OREF will be doing our part to help them continue their research and is offering the following information and guidance.
OREF has identified short-term administrative flexibilities to assist our recipients with managing administrative and financial issues while maintaining accountability requirements. The OREF Research Grants Committee (RGC) and the Board of Trustees are allowing increased flexibility because of the multiple challenges we face due to the pandemic.
- If your research has been interrupted and you are unable to meet your original progress and budget targets, please apply for a no cost extension (NCE).
- If your institution is unable to complete and submit financial and research progress reports by the scheduled due date due to the effects of COVID-19, please be sure to contact the OREF Grants team to let them know the reports will be late.
- OREF will accept late reports but will delay issuing grant funds until the reports are received and accepted.
As the pace of the nation''s emergence from pandemic-related closures is still unknown, researchers planning to apply for grant funding during 2020 may also be impacted by institutional issues in the coming months. OREF will consider requests for extensions and delayed starting dates on a case-by-case basis.
Current grant recipients and others planning to apply for a grant are encouraged to contact the OREF Grants team with their questions. The team may be reached by email at grants@oref.org.

For Such A Time As This - OrthoChallenge
OREF is pleased to announce its endorsement of the For Such A Time As This - OrthoChallenge. This innovative program, conceived by NovApproach Spine CEO, Raymond J. Cloutier along with co-sponsors Joseph D. Zuckerman, MD, and Dawn A. Lissy, MS, encourages the development of new product, software and services that address the needs of orthopaedic patients whose surgeries and therapies have been delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The goal of the program is to harness the energies of the highly talented and creative people in the orthopaedic community who due to COVID-19-related work restrictions, including the discontinuance of elective surgery, have unexpected time available to pursue new ideas. The intent is for these individuals to use this ''found time'' to create a positive impact for patients and orthopaedics in general that will endure beyond the COVID-19 crisis. The sponsors are encouraging submissions that will help orthopaedic patients by:
- Addressing or assisting with their physical limitations while they wait for their procedure to be done.
- Reducing the chance their musculoskeletal issues will put them at greater risk of contracting COVID-19.
- Minimizing the risk their orthopaedic condition will affect morbidity or mortality if they contract COVID-19.
Submissions are due May 10, 2020. For more information about the For Such A Time As This - OrthoChallenge, visit www.forsuchatimeasthisortho.com.
