This coming November 4-7, 2019, OpenNebula Systems will be in Barcelona, Spain at the VMworld EU 2019 event, a �must-attend� event in the world of Virtualization and Cloud Computing. And we will be stationed in the midst of the �Solutions Exchange� (Booth # E115), prepared and excited to showcase our latest release of vOneCloud � the open-source replacement for VMware vCloud. We will be giving live demo�s of how a VMware-based infrastructure can be turned into a cloud with a fully functional self-service portal in 5 minutes!

We�ll also be sharing some of our latest developments and insights into what�s in store for upcoming releases of vOneCloud 3.6, and for OpenNebula 5.10, which is right around the corner (currently in beta release). 

OpenNebula 5.10 and vOneCloud 3.6 will include support for VMware NSX-V, with features like:

• Logical switches
• Distributed Firewall (DFW)
• Security Groups (SG)

We�ll be including integration with VMware NSX-T, as well, with Opaque Networks support, allowing:

•  Creation / Delete / Import / Attach / Detach in NSX-T environments
•  Import / Attach / Detach in VMC on AWS environments.

You�ll soon be able to work with logical switches to Create, Delete, Modify, Attach and Detach virtualwires through OpenNebula to its instances and templates. And microsegmentation will be supported thanks to working in conjunction with Distributed Firewall and Security Groups, enabling the next level of security even for servers on the same network.

You will also see support for VMRC through Sunstone using HTML5. This will alleviate the need to connect directly from the client browser to the ESX running the specific VM to gain console access. Full support for all disk buses (SATA, IDE, SCSI) will be added, as well. And vCenter Driver refactoring, better error handling and performance improvements are all lined up.

Technology

October was a busy month � one for which we have been waiting a long time. This month we cut a Beta release of OpenNebula 5.10 �Boomerang�, a version that will be bringing exciting new features across the platform, including NSX integration, a revamped Hooks Subsystem, and NUMA and CPU pinning, among others. Take a look at the Release Notes to get a more detailed look, and download it to give it a shot. We would love to get your feedback!

As the demand to try out ONEedge is growing, we have taken miniONE and extended its usability to include the easy installation of an Edge cloud using bare-metal resources from Packet. If you are looking to take advantage of edge resources close to your users and to reduce latency within your private cloud, take a look at the simple steps with miniONE to deploy your own Edge cloud.

We have also been actively working on VMware integration, in particular, to include support of VMRC, which is a substitute of VNC offered by vCenter. Keep an eye out for upcoming updates.

Community

On October 21 and 22, we celebrated the 8th Annual OpenNebula Conference, in Barcelona, Spain, where we welcomed a technically-minded group of attendees. During the first day, we held a Hands-on Administration tutorial, as well as a Hacking session, where attendees shared their experiences and solutions to common OpenNebula operational situations. Everything from networking and storage, to provisioning schemes were discussed. The second day was also full of technical gems. We covered GOCA Golang bindings of the OpenNebula API, and a couple of detailed use cases of OpenNebula at the network edge (CORD by Telefonica and gaming by Crytek). The rest of the morning talks showcased the flexibility and simplicity of OpenNebula to implement multiple solutions like virtual labs, cloud VDI, and nested virtualized infrastructure. The day ended with four workshops with animated discussions about the upcoming features of OpenNebula, best practices to operate a cloud, and how to deploy container-based solutions with OpenNebula.

Earlier this month, we saw a new addition to the OpenNebula Add-on Catalog. A contribution from FeldHost, which allows OpenNebula to use an HPE 3PAR storage system for storing disk images. The OpenNebula Team is very proud to announce the latest release of OpenNebula � code-named �Boomerang�. This is the sixth update release of the OpenNebula 5 series, and as you will have seen in previous �beta� communications, the 5.10 �Boomerang� version extends the ongoing development and evolution of OpenNebula with a focus on targeting usability and functional improvements driven by your needs.

Some of the highlights of Boomerang are:

• Revamped Hook Subsystem: The OpenNebula API Hooks Subsystem has been given a fresh, new �makeover�, massively boosting the flexibility to manage events. 
• NUMA and CPU pinning: You will be able to define in which NUMA node VMs will be deployed.
• NSX integration: Create and consume NSX networks from within OpenNebula, making network virtualization much simpler for those with VMware infrastructure.
• DPDK support: You can now dramatically increase performance in network-hungry, densely packed VMs.
• 2FA Authentication for Sunstone: Two-Factor Authorization will not only require a username and password, but also a token generated by any of these applications: Google Authentication, Authy or Microsoft Authentication.

Several features in this version release support the advancement of OpenNebula extending to meet the needs at the Edge, and ultimately establishing the robust technology base for ONEedge � a distributed cloud management platform to build your private edge computing environment.

The OpenNebula project would like to thank the community members and users who have contributed to this software release by being active with the discussions, answering user questions, or providing patches for bugfixes, features and documentation.

OpenNebula 5.10 �Boomerang� is considered to be a stable release, and as such an update is available in production environments.

After many hours of development, reviewing all the feedback we received from the Community and going through an intense testing phase, later this month we have officially announced the release of OpenNebula 5.10 �Boomerang�. These are some of the highlights of this new version:

• DPDK support
• 2FA Authentication for Sunstone

We�ve been working hard to make sure that �Boomerang� meets all the requirements to become a robust base for ONEedge�the distributed cloud management platform we are building for private edge computing environments.

Earlier in the month we received some more good news, when OpenNebula Kubernetes was officially listed as a Managed Production Environment Solution! If you haven�t done it yet, now it�s the perfect time to try our Marketplace Appliance with preinstalled Kubernetes service.

And, of course, we don�t forget that the world of containers is both amazing and very diverse, with many interesting open source projects out there. That is why this month�s blog has included a post about using Docker on OpenNebula through LXD, with a step-by-step tutorial for those OpenNebula users willing to benefit from the combination of those two powerful technologies.
 

Community

Some last minute news, just in time to make it to this November newsletter� we are very happy to announce that, as the result of a fruitful collaboration between Iguane Solutions and OpenNebula Systems, the Terraform Provider for OpenNebula has now been officially approved by Hashicorp!

This month also comes with some changes in the Community structure, with Alberto P. Mart� joining OpenNebula Systems� new HQ office at La Finca Business Park in Madrid as our new Open Source Community Manager. From now on, Alberto will be joining forces with the rest of us to make sure that the OpenNebula Community�in his own words��keeps shining brightly, right at the center of the project.�

The OpenNebula Community is indeed in good shape, and has become a constant source of pride for the project. Our Community plays a key role in improving not only the technical aspects of OpenNebula, but also other crucial aspects such as the localization of Sunstone, OpenNebula�s GUI. Recent contributions by community members include, for instance, a fully automated Helm chart to deploy an OpenNebula control-plane on Kubernetes, and a recent integration of OpenNebula with ElastiCluster.
 

Outreach

As we announced last month, November comes every year with what�s become now a classic for the OpenNebula team: VMworld EU in Barcelona. We were stationed in the midst of the �Solutions Exchange� area, answering questions, meeting amazing people, and showcasing our latest release of vOneCloud�the open source alternative to vCloud designed for users that want to maintain their VMware infrastructure while avoiding technological lock-ins.

And last but not least, a reminder to all the open source and cloud enthusiasts out there: the OpenNebula project is growing and we are hiring! Have a look at the Careers section of the OpenNebula Systems� website and discover some of the profiles we are looking for, including a Cloud Technical Evangelist. We have opened the Call for Hosts for the OpenNebula TechDays in 2020!

The OpenNebula TechDays are educational and networking public events to learn about OpenNebula, edge computing and open source cloud. Join our technical experts from OpenNebula Systems and members of the OpenNebula Community for a one-day hands-on workshop on cloud installation and operation.

As part of these open training sessions, participants will get a comprehensive overview of the new OpenNebula 5.10 'Boomerang' and will be equipped with the skills and insight to take back to their teams and organizations and implement right away.

A turning point for OpenNebula

Another year comes to an end, and as we look back on 2019 it becomes clear that the OpenNebula project is in the middle of an exciting turning point. This year has brought important novelties from a product development perspective. OpenNebula incorporates now promising integrations and new functionalities as a result of the joint efforts of developers, users and partners.

Thanks to a vibrant Community and a committed Partner Ecosystem, OpenNebula has consolidated its position as a leading open source Cloud Management Platform. This scenario has opened up new opportunities, such as the development of our open source approach to Edge Computing, providing powerful tools for companies to easily deploy low-latency services in close proximity to users, machines, and sources of data.

Expanding OpenNebula�s technological frontiers

The OpenNebula development team has been quite busy this year. 2019 has witnessed the release of two stable versions�5.8 �Edge� in February, and 5.10 �Boomerang� in November�along with three hotfix versions and three maintenance releases (including the release of version 5.10.1 a couple of weeks ago). Installation of OpenNebula has never been so easy, with the installable packages including now all the dependencies and thus making the installation process smoother.

Several of the improvements that users have enjoyed this year had to do with OpenNebula�s core, including new support for NUMA and CPU pinning. The Hook Subsystem has been redesigned and is now much more flexible thanks to a new event queue that facilitates integrations with third-party applications. We�ve also enhanced the OpenNebula scheduler with automatic NIC selection, which alleviates the burden of VM/container template management in edge environments with heterogeneous network configurations.

In 2019 we�ve taken a crucial step forward, introducing support for infrastructure containers through LXD, the powerful Linux system container manager, which enables low resource container orchestration. We�ve improved the support for mixed storage modes, making OpenNebula more flexible and easier to integrate with third-party storage solutions, and we�ve also added DPDK support to the Open vSwitch drivers, which dramatically increases performance in network-hungry, densely packed VMs.

OpenNebula users with underlying VMware infrastructure have also enjoyed some specific novelties in 2019, including the new migration�both cold and live�of VMs between different vCenter clusters and/or different datastores. The new automatic image conversion between VMDK and QCOW2 facilitates the transition from VMware infrastructure to KVM (and vice versa). The recently-added NSX integration also brings some significant improvements for creating and consuming NSX networks from within OpenNebula, making network virtualization much simpler. vOneCloud, the open source replacement for VMware vCloud that we provide in the form of a virtual CentOS appliance for vSphere, will see a new release coming out in a matter of weeks.

Finally, OpenNebula�s user interfaces, which have also seen a series of enhancements, starting with the improved output for the command line interface (CLI). Sunstone, OpenNebula�s GUI, will go through a major redesign next year as part of the release of OpenNebula 6.0. In the meantime, an extra layer of security is now in place, with the recent addition of Two-Factor Authentication to the login process. The new Distributed Data Centers feature, on the other hand, provides now an easy way to build and grow your cloud on bare-metal cloud providers, a key element for implementing an edge cloud architecture.

MiniONE, our simple deployment tool for installing a single-node KVM or LXD cloud, has also gone through some changes in 2019. It is now easier than ever to set up your own OpenNebula evaluation environment inside a virtual machine or physical host in just a few minutes. Recent versions of miniONE come with an option that enables you to try OpenNebula�s new Edge Computing functionality, which includes the OpenNebula frontend and KVM hypervisors already pre-configured and ready to be deployed on public bare-metal providers (i.e. Packet).

To boldly go where no one has gone before�

OpenNebula�s vision and firm commitment with open source and Edge Computing has been recognized in 2019 by the European Innovation Council. A few months ago, OpenNebula Systems was awarded �2.1M from the EU Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Program to assist in the development and productization of ONEedge, an innovative platform that brings the private cloud to the edge through cloud disaggregation.

ONEedge takes advantage of bare-metal offerings from public cloud providers to naturally evolve a private edge cloud, providing companies with an automated software-defined platform to build private Edge Computing environments based on highly-dispersed edge nodes. A prototype of this new product has already been successfully tested to launch a distributed gaming cloud, an AWS IoT Greengrass edge environment, and a pilot platform by Telef�nica for the real-time self-provisioning of telco services. So buckle up, because the project is about to engage warp speed! ????

In preparation for this exciting voyage to the outer reaches of the cloud universe, OpenNebula is reinforcing its crew and warming up the impulse engines of its new starships. In November 2019, OpenNebula Systems moved to its new HQ office at La Finca Business Park in Madrid, the innovation hub hosting the main facilities of well-known technological companies such as Microsoft, Accenture, Orange and Veritas Technologies. This move quadruplicates the size of our premises in Spain. Along with this change comes the planned expansion in 2020 of the OpenNebula Labs in Brno (Czech Republic)�which will double in space�and also of the OpenNebula�s office in Boston, Massachusetts.

All this comes as a result of the enlargement of the OpenNebula team, which is now hiring and incorporating new profiles to the project, including the recent landing of a new Open Source Community Manager at the Madrid HQ. Our global team is growing, and we are now in the search for cloud systems developers, cloud systems engineers, full stack developers, a digital marketing specialist and a cloud technical evangelist. All candidates must be willing to join us in this adventure to explore strange new worlds and seek out new life beyond the current frontiers of open source cloud and Edge Computing.
 

An open source project that revolves around its community

The fate of any truly open source project is intrinsically tied to the strength and enthusiasm of its community of developers, users and partners. With a solid team of core developers and a growing number of users, contributors, translators, project ambassadors and third party add-ons, the OpenNebula project stands as a living example of the viability and potentialities of a fully open source model.

Openness for us means that you can run production-ready software that is fully open source without proprietary extensions that lock you in. OpenNebula is not an �open core� solution or a limited version of an enterprise software. There is one and only one OpenNebula distribution, and it is Apache-licensed and enterprise-ready. After you�ve decided to use the product, you can then choose between community or professional support. As simple as that.

Now that we are fast approaching the end of 2019, we can confirm that this year has also been a turning point from a Community perspective, with a number of amazing developments and new joint projects coming up. We�ve seen OpenNebula Kubernetes being officially listed as a Managed Production Environment Solution, Iguane Solutions� Terraform Provider for OpenNebula being officially approved by HashiCorp, and new storage drivers being developed for LINSTOR and HPE 3PAR.

The successful integration of OpenNebula with LXD and Docker has opened up a number of interesting possibilities, which have been expanded in 2019 by the contributions that several community members have made to the project, including a fully automated Helm chart to deploy an OpenNebula control-plane on Kubernetes and a recent integration of OpenNebula with ElastiCluster.

Other exciting initiatives that have taken place this year include OpenNebula�s participation in Packet�s Edge Access Program�a scheme to accelerate open source and commercial use cases by providing access to edge infrastructure, technology partnerships and expertise�and the announcement of OpenNebula�s membership in Vapor IO�s Kinetic Edge Alliance�a network that brings together the leading companies in Edge Computing to solve the key challenges at every layer of the stack, and create solutions for essential edge use cases.

And finally, the icing on the cake has come this year in the form of an article about OpenNebula published by Linux Journal as part of their �FOSS Project Spotlight� series, plus a second piece published on VMware�s Cloud Community blog as part of their �Exploring Ecosystem Partners for VMware Cloud on AWS� series�not bad for a project that has come all this way with virtually no PR budget� ???? Of course, in terms of spreading the word out there, our Community Champions deserve much of the merit! Next year we�ll review our Champion Program to make sure that we are giving them all the support they need.

Open source is social

What makes an open source project a living organism is not only the code, but also the people that develop, use, translate and promote the shared values and vision behind a specific piece of software. That is why we at OpenNebula will keep investing time, resources and energy in providing the members of our Community with enough chances throughout the year to meet, get to know each other, talk about open source, cloud technologies and Edge Computing, find synergies and learn from each other.

Earlier this month, OpenNebula�s development team published the first Maintenance Release of stable branch 5.10 �Boomerang�: OpenNebula 5.10.1 comes with a series of bug fixes and minor improvements. Check the release announcement for more details and access to a complete list of new features.

Despite all the hard work that�s involved in a new release, our indefatigable developers also had time and energy to contribute, as usual, to the project�s blog. This month�s posts covered a series of tips for selecting the right CPU model on KVM x86 hosts and a step-by-step tutorial on how to create an OpenNebula appliance for Gaming Servers.
 

Community

This month we�ve opened the Call for Hosts for the OpenNebula TechDays 2020. Our TechDays are educational and networking public events to learn about OpenNebula, edge computing and open source cloud. Back from the Xmas break, this month we�ve been warming up our engines for a year that�s going to bring amazing developments. One of them, as we announced a couple of weeks ago, involves OpenNebula supporting a new virtualization technology: Firecracker! Originally developed by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Firecracker makes use of KVM to launch lightweight micro-VMs for serverless computing, combining enhanced security and workload isolation with speed and resource efficiency. More news to come very soon� ????

At the same time, our brave Engineering Team keeps working, as usual, on improving OpenNebula�s current components in preparation for the next release, that will see the light of day later this year. In the meantime, we�ve got a taste of some of these improvements thanks to a blog post on how OneFlow�OpenNebula�s multi-VM management component�is being expanded with additional network features. Needless to say, this is just the tip of the iceberg!
 

Community

Things are getting quite busy, as you can see, and that�s why this month we�ve expanded again the OpenNebula Team, this time with two new members joining our Madrid HQ: Cloud Engineer Sergio Betanzos and Senior Cloud Engineer Ricardo D�az. Sergio will be part of the development team that�s in charge of baking the new version of Sunstone�OpenNebula�s graphical interface. Ricardo, on the other hand, will be joining our engineering team and supporting those OpenNebula users operating in the cybersecurity sector.

Also, many congratulations to Andrei Kvapil (Cloud Architect / DevOps at WEDOS Internet) for becoming a Community Champion! Apart from his many contributions to the code and public presentations about OpenNebula, in his spare time he has managed to create a large Telegram group of Russian-speaking users. Many thanks for your hard work in support of the project!

The summer break is almost here, but not quite yet! After the release back in mid-June of our new version, the spectacular OpenNebula 5.12 "Firework", this month our Engineering Team have kept themselves quite busy too. Not happy with producing Maintenance Release 5.12.1 for those Corporate Users with access to our Enterprise Edition, they have also published Patch Release 5.12.0.1, which brings a number of new features and fixed issues to the users of our Community Edition.

But those have not been the only major announcements in July! An additional development in our enterprise product release cycle was presented a few days ago: the introduction of new LTS versions to reduce the risk, expense, and disruption of software deployment. Starting with OpenNebula 5.12, the very first of them, LTS versions will be maintained and officially supported by OpenNebula Systems for a period of at least 27 months. Not bad, right? ??

And to make things easier for everyone to get to know the new benefits that OpenNebula 5.12 brings along, we have produced a number of new resources for our users. A new micro-site has been created with more information and materials about Firecracker microVMs, the new virtualization technology developed by AWS and now fully supported by OpenNebula. But there's more! Here you have an updated version of our white papers, with more details about how to deploy an OpenNebula cloud based on VMware vCenter, KVM, LXD and Firecracker.

And in anticipation of our users having some spare time during their holidays, we've been working hard to prepare some interesting readings for you! We've published a couple of amazing blog posts lately, both of them illustrating the huge potential of the combination Firecracker + Docker Hub. The first of them comes with a fantastic screencast that guides you through the process of using Firecracker at the Edge for IoT deployments, whereas the second post explains in detail why we've fallen in love with the concept of deploying applications containers as microVMs ?? And speaking of Docker Hub. don't forget this public Knowledge Base article about our new native integration with the Docker Hub marketplace!

With large cloud providers taking increasingly flamboyant measures to try to convince corporate users to migrate to their public clouds, we at OpenNebula know that what really brings freedom to an organization's cloud infrastructure-and avoids vendor lock-in-is the combination of three simple ideas: open source software, an elastic private cloud, and the capacity to incorporate additional resources from bare-metal providers when necessary. This is our recipe for the enterprise cloud, fashions aside.

And that's why we keep focusing our efforts on innovation, trying to adapt OpenNebula to the real needs of our users and customers. to boldly go where no cloud has gone before! ?? And this is exactly what the new OpenNebula 5.12-codenamed after the spectacular Firework Nebula-does. This month we have released its beta version, which comes with a preview of some of the major new features that "Firework" will bring along: full support for AWS Firecracker micro-VMs and seamless integration with the Docker Hub marketplace!

In the meantime, while the stable version of OpenNebula 5.12 gets ready for launch, we keep improving OpenNebula 5.10 "Boomerang". Earlier this month our Engineering Team announced Hotfix Release 5.10.5. While OpenNebula is fully open source, packages from hotfix incremental versions are not publicly released, and are only available for users with an active OpenNebula Subscription. As usual, this version fixes several issues and includes a number of new features that have been backported.
 

Community

With the imminent release of OpenNebula 5.12 "Firework" also comes the traditional re-evaluation of the priorities for the rest of the year. To make sure all of our current users had a chance to have their say and help us define OpenNebula's roadmap for 2020, this month we've launched our annual Architecture Survey. As usual, in the following weeks we'll be publishing the results of this large-scale consultation.

And this month we have also been working on our new collection of screencasts. As promised, we'll be producing new stuff regularly, so keep an eye on our social networks and website! In May we have published three new screencasts: a first one on how to build an image for Windows Virtual Machines, followed by a second one on how to use OpenNebula + Apache Guacamole to set up an open source VDI solution, and finally a third one on how to use miniONE to deploy VMs on the Edge. Not bad, right? ??
 

Outreach

In April we announced that we were working on a new webinar series, and here it is! We've had two amazing OpenNebula Webinars so far, now available on demand: a first session on the new integration of AWS Firecracker, and a second one on how to migrate your cloud to OpenNebula + StorPool Distributed Storage. Special thanks to this month's guest speakers: Andreea Florescu (Software Developer Engineer at AWS), Venko Moyankov (Solutions Architect at StorPool) and Richard Lingsch (Managing Director of eApps Hosting).

This month we've also have been participating at some third-party events, including the Cloud Data Summit (North America). There's little doubt that the main event this month has been the release of our new version, the spectacular OpenNebula 5.12 "Firework"! After several months of hard work, here you have a release we feel especially proud of. Now, thanks to the integration with both Firecracker and Docker Hub, OpenNebula has become a real alternative for implementing an agile and serverless cloud paradigm for containerized workloads! Here you'll find, for instance, an interesting comparative between our orchestration model for application containers and a solution based on Kubernetes ??

But that is only one of the many novelties that this new release brings along, so we invite you to have a look at its official micro-site, watch the presentation webinar that's now available on-demand, and take some time to discover "Firework" in more detail. This month we've also announced our new Enterprise Edition, a more tested, hardened, and production-ready version of OpenNebula that incorporates additional bug fixes developed by OpenNebula Systems and software patches with minor enhancements, along with a series of Enterprise Tools to simplify upgrades and the maintenance of OpenNebula clouds in production environments.

June has been a month with lots of Community events! We have to say a big thank you to all the members of the OpenNebula Community, Champions and Technological Partners that have helped us organize this month's events. Our first virtual Techday of the year, for example, wouldn't have been possible without the invaluable support of our local community in Barcelona. Kudos to CSUC (Consorci de Serveis Universitaris de Catalunya) and Cloud Admins Barcelona!

Yesterday we published the results of the OpenNebula Architecture Survey 2020. Thanks to all of you who participated in this survey! Your contributions to this initiative, as always, are essential for ensuring that we maintain a proper focus on you, our community of users, and your evolving needs. This is the fifth architectural survey of OpenNebula since 2012 ??

And this month we've also published a blog post explaining how OpenNebula is contributing to GAIA-X, the project that aims to achieve an open, federated, secure and trustworthy data and cloud infrastructure for Europe. We are bringing to the table our expertise in distributed and federated cloud environments, hyperconverged cloud infrastructures, complex storage and virtual networking architectures, management and automation tools for large cloud deployments, and Edge Computing. We'll keep you posted about this amazing initiative!
 

Outreach

Our team has also been busy participating at external events like OpenExpo Europe, where we delivered a talk on "the past, present and future of OpenNebula" and presented OneEdge, our current project on Edge Computing. And our new Webinar series has also been a source of inspiration and knowledge, providing a chance to discover the new LXD 4.0 and explore how OpenNebula can be used to deploy and manage LXD system containers. October has been a month full of events, starting with our Engineering Team keeping themselves busy and producing CE Patch Release 5.12.0.3 and EE Maintenance Release 5.12.5! ?? As usual, Corporate Users with an active OpenNebula Subscription can access the latest version of our Enterprise Edition from their private repositories.

And we haven't forgotten those users with VMware infrastructure who are evaluating OpenNebula as an open source (and more economical) replacement for vCloud and vRealize! They can now download an updated version of vOneCloud, the virtual appliance for vSphere that helps you set up an OpenNebula cloud on vCenter in just a few minutes.

This month we have also published a couple of new white papers that summarize the way in which OpenNebula is rapidly becoming a powerful edge computing platform and also a solid alternative for the management and orchestration of containerized workloads and services. We hope you'll find this voyage to the edge of the Cloud Universe as fascinating as we do! ??

Community

Last month we announced that we are starting to test the new edge resources provided by Verizon and made available via the new AWS Wavelength program. We are really excited about the recent announcements of 5G telecommunication providers partnering with cloud providers to create new edge computing zones, all this is great news for our ONEedge initiative!

And news keep coming also about several events being organized by members of the OpenNebula Community! A couple of them took place last week, for instance, with Community Champion Andrei Kvapil (Cloud Architect / DevOps at WEDOS Internet) participating at LINSTOR Days 2020 with a talk on how they use LINSTOR for Kubernetes and OpenNebula ??

Kudos as well to StorPool-a long-time Technology Partner of OpenNebula that has recently joined our new MSP Program-for organizing a great webinar on how to use OpenNebula + StorPool Storage to successfully migrate from VMware and Hyper-V to a new-age IT stack with KVM. Big thanks to Dustin, a leading IT company in the Nordic region and the Netherlands, for sharing their experience and such an inspiring success story during this webinar!

And speaking of events. this month we've had a number exciting opportunities for OpenNebula to share some of the developments happening around the project, including a presentation on Serverless Computing with OpenNebula at Edge Computing World 2020 and an amazing live demo showing how to use OpenNebula + K3s to deploy multiplayer game servers on the edge at Rancher's Computing on the Edge with Kubernetes (the recording will be available on demand very soon, so stay tuned).

As it happens, the new Rancher 2.5 was the focus of the webinar we organized in early October with our colleagues from Rancher Labs. Adrian Goins, Director of Community and Evangelism, joined us for an event in which attendees learned about our integration with Rancher, including the deployment of Kubernetes clusters on the edge ?? And don't forget to sign up for the next webinar! Building an Elastic Cloud using Equinix Metal resources at the Edge will take place on Tuesday, November 3.

In mid-March, our Engineering Team (whose members, along with the rest of the OpenNebula Team, have been working from home for three weeks already) announced Hotfix Release 5.10.3. While OpenNebula is fully open source, packages from hotfix incremental versions are not publicly released, and are only available for users with an active support subscription. This version fixes several issues and includes a number of new features that have been backported.

One of the novelties that the forthcoming OpenNebula v.5.12 will bring along, after several months of intense work, is a fully redesigned OneFlow. This powerful component, whose new version comes with an incredible improvement in performance, allows OpenNebula users to run complex services in their private cloud, now quicker than ever!

In the meantime, if what you want is to set up a simple OpenNebula edge cloud environment for evaluation purposes, you can always refer to this new step-by-step technical guide on MiniONE recently published by bare-metal provider Packet (now part of Equinix). This one follows a first technical guide published last month.

Kudos to Mara Sorella, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Research Center of Cyber Intelligence and Information Security (Sapienza University of Rome), for inaugurating the new Cybersecurity section of our blog with a guest post on "Building Emulation Environments for Cybersecurity Analyses", which is based on the paper she presented a few months ago in Barcelona at the OpenNebulaConf 2019. Amazing stuff!

We are extremely proud to announce that the upcoming release of OpenNebula 5.12 "Firework" will be the start of an Enterprise Edition series that will bring a more tested, hardened, and production-ready version of OpenNebula. Last week, we made a global announcement outlining the benefits that the new OpenNebula Enterprise Edition will bring along. 

Our new Enterprise Edition comes with additional bug fixes developed by OpenNebula Systems and software patches with minor enhancements, as well as with a series of enterprise tools to simplify upgrades and the maintenance of OpenNebula clouds in production environments. The Enterprise Edition packages and enterprise tools for customers will be distributed under commercial license terms, but our commitment to open source remains intact: our Community Edition will continue to be a full-featured version of OpenNebula, released under Apache License 2.0. 

Access to our new Enterprise Edition is only one of the many benefits provided by the OpenNebula Subscription. Corporate users with an active OpenNebula Subscription also have access to expert SLA-based support, to exclusive Knowledge Base contents, tutorials and critical notifications, and to the Professional Services provided by OpenNebula Systems engineers and consultants.

And all this is only the beginning! A new enterprise extension has also been made available this month: OneScape. The main objective of this brand-new component of OpenNebula is to simplify the maintenance, management and upgrade workflows for corporate users. But wait, that's not all! A few days ago we officially announced the release of OpenNebula's new Microsoft Azure Driver. OpenNebula supports cloud bursting for Hybrid Cloud deployments on Azure, AWS, and third-party OpenNebula instances. Now, following Microsoft's recommendation, we've updated the Azure driver in OpenNebula to make it compatible with the new Azure Resource Manager. This new feature will be released as part of the forthcoming OpenNebula v.5.12. Hurrah!

This month we have also announced-finally!-the preliminary 2020 schedule for our TechDays. If everything goes as expected (and COVID-19 doesn't end up disrupting every single business trip or tech event on the planet) we'll be meeting over the next months in several locations in Austria, Bulgaria, France, Spain and the United States. Registrations for our first Cloud TechDay-Sofia (Bulgaria)-which will be part of StorPool's European Cloud Infrastructure Day on May 14, are already open!

In the meantime, we also keep working on our OpenNebula Conference 2020, which as you know will take place at the beautiful Tangla Hotel in Brussels (Belgium) on October 1-2. In the meantime, earlier this month our Engineering Team (still working from home, obviously) announced Hotfix Release 5.10.4. While OpenNebula is fully open source, packages from hotfix incremental versions are not publicly released, and are only available for users with an active OpenNebula Subscription. As usual, this version fixes several issues and includes a number of new features that have been backported.

This month we've published two blog posts that have caused quite a sensation, both of them related with our on-going initiative for bringing the Private Cloud to the Edge: OneEdge.io The first of those articles has been focused on explaining how to easily set up an OpenNebula environment with Kubernetes clusters on the Edge, including a practical example showing how to deploy multiplayer game servers on Packet bare-metal resources. The second article introduced our new Elastic Private Media Cloud concept, and explained how OTT services and Media companies can make use of on-demand Edge clouds to run high-definition video streaming and live broadcasting services ??

But wait. that's not all! These days we have also updated the resources that we offer to our users through our Public Marketplace. Feel free to browse the catalog and give a try to the two most recent additions: the updated versions of our Kubernetes virtual appliance and of the GitLab service.

Community

This month has brought a number of novelties to the OpenNebula Community, at all levels! We've recently announced two strategic partnerships: the first one involves OpenNebula becoming a Technology Partner of HashiCorp-creators of Terraform-with the second one bringing us closer to Intel as new members of its Network Builders Edge Ecosystem.

We've also seen some amazing contributions these past few days from members of the OpenNebula Community, including Community Champion Andrei Kvapil's improvements to his driver for LINSTOR and Dennis Felsch's implementation of 2FA for Sunstone (OpenNebula's WebUI). And, as you know, the project is growing, so this month we are happy to announce that the OpenNebula Team has a new Business Development Manager: Cristina Palacios. Welcome and godspeed! ????? ??

Technology

Our colleagues from the Engineering Team have kept themselves quite busy this month working on a number of interesting projects, including a last-minute Christmas present: EE Maintenance Release 5.12.7! ?? As usual, Corporate Users with an active OpenNebula Subscription can access the latest version of our Enterprise Edition from their private repositories.

In early December, after working on this new concept for several weeks, we finally announced our True Hybrid Cloud Architecture, our new reference architecture composed of hybrid clusters that can run any workload (both virtualized and containerized), on any resource (physical or virtual) and anywhere (on-premises and on the cloud). This architecture is the basis of our new Managed Services for Corporate Users ??

This month we've also updated our GitLab Virtual Appliance for KVM, now supporting CE Security Release 13.6.2 and, as usual, available from our Public Marketplace. But there's more! We've also had time to start testing our integration with AWS Wavelength, the new service that Amazon Web Services has recently launch in collaboration with Verizon, Vodafone and other 5G telecommunication providers. In the near future, OpenNebula users will be able to easily provision Wavelength resources and deploy Kubernetes clusters and containerized applications on the 5G edge. Quite cool, right? ??

Community

In November we announced our new "Case Studies" initiative, through which we'll be publishing a collection of testimonials by users and customers, sharing their specific requirements and ensuing experiences using OpenNebula. This month we've published two of those inspiring stories, one of them by Tony Saraj?rvi (CI Tech Lead at The Qt Company) and another one by Kenneth Van Alstyne (Systems Architect at Perspecta). Kudos to both of them for sharing their wisdom with the rest of the OpenNebula Community! ??

And just a couple of days ago, we got some more great news: a new release of the Terraform Provider for OpenNebula! ?? Here you have the full announcement by Jean-Philippe Four?s (Cloud Product Manager at Iguane Solutions), one of the leaders of this Community initiative. This release is a huge step forward in making it easier for users to manage a running cluster, so many thanks to all the members of the OpenNebula Community involved in this development!

Outreach

In December, our monthly OpenNebula Webinar was devoted to Agones, the open source multiplayer dedicated game server scaling and orchestration platform ?? It included an amazing live demo on how to use OpenNebula to easily build a global distributed cloud using bare-metal resources to deploy K3s clusters at the edge for low-latency multiplayer gaming. Many thanks to our guest speaker, Mark Mandel (Developer Advocate at Google Cloud for Games)!

And speaking of events. please be advised that our OpenNebula Conference, that was going to take place in Brussels (Belgium) in April 2021, has been re-scheduled again-hopefully the last one!-this time for September 2021, due to the on-going COVID-19 crisis.
