Learning how to sell coffee online is something that's easily within reach - even for small-scale businesses
How to Sell Coffee Online: 5 Steps to Success
Despite our nation's infatuation with the beloved brew, not even the coffee industry could escape the effects of COVID-19 and the subsequent business closures. Local coffee shops and roasters, in particular, have been hit hard - but instead of floundering, they're pivoting strategies and learning how to sell coffee online.
These coffee retailers are finding success by allowing customers to get their caffeine fix from the comfort of their own homes through eCommerce websites that sell signature roasts, bulk bean orders, and even monthly coffee subscriptions. In return, roasters can reach a broader range of customers, reward loyal customers, and secure an alternate revenue stream not just now, but far into the future.

Top Lot Arrivals from Tajumuco and Ayarza
F E A T U R E D A R R I V A LS
Guatemala Tajumuco Farmer Center
*TOP LOT*
Chocolate, Plum, Black Cherry, Toffee, Heavy Body
The Tajumuco region of Huehuetenango is one of the most productive regions of all of Guatemala due to the text book perfect conditions for coffee growing. Receiving about 1600-1800mm rainfall per year, the soil is both rich and deep. Coffee trees are protected from the wind by the managed shade and the towering mountains that surround the farms. Tajumuco producers start the wet milling process by depulping in the afternoon, leaving it for 24hrs of dry fermentation. Later to separate the floaters and some of the greens in the first washing these are skimmed off the top. Then the coffees are washed in tiny washing channels. Flat space is minimal so the coffees are fully sun dried on concrete patios, roofs or black tarps where ever space can be found.

As with many coffee origins, it is believed that coffee was first brought to Colombia by priests
Colombian Coffee: The Complete Guide
When did Colombia start growing coffee? As with many coffee origins, it is believed that coffee was first brought to Colombia by priests. It was likely a garden crop grown for local consumption and barter for decades. Unlike other coffee regions, we have the story of a priest named Francisco Romero, who could be called the father of commercial coffee cultivation in Colombia.
The folkloric tale goes that in the early 1800's, Father Francisco, hearing confessions in the north eastern town of Salazar de la Palmas, assigned planting coffee to his parishioners as penance for their sins. The Archbishop of Colombia heard about this and ordered all priests to adopt the practice.

Purchasing Green Coffee Beans: Here''s What You Need to Know
A 60-kilo bag holds approximately 132 pounds of green coffee beans that will roast down to approximately 110 pounds of roasted coffee. Sure, you don't need to roast it all at once, but if it would take you months to get through a 60-kilo bag, because of the size of your roasters or lack of distribution (family and friends at first) or both of these reasons, you're probably not ready for 60-kilos just yet.
So, You Want to Be a Wholesale Coffee Roaster
There are many different roads to roasting coffee and these days it's not unusual for someone to start roasting who has no previous experience with coffee beyond their morning cup. This can be good news and bad news. The potential good news is increasing availability of fresh roasted coffee. Local becomes ever more . uh, local, and there are more choices. The bad news: as the traditional, if informal, apprenticeships that were once the norm in coffee roasting become the road less travelled, we see more roasters who are "practicing in public" and putting less than stellar coffee out into the world as they do and calling it specialty.
Coffee Shop Business Plan: For the Roaster Retailer It's Just 7 Words
The strategy, the seven word coffee shop plan for roasters that can inform and inspire these decisions and a dozen others, from the mundane to the most complex, every single day, is simple.
"Meet our people and taste our coffee."
There are many things to get right as a specialty coffee roaster retailer, but those who make every effort to ensure these two experiences are memorable before everything else are working at an advantage above those who seek uniqueness for uniqueness sake.

While the history of Costa Rican coffee is the subject of some debate, it is estimated that coffee came to Costa Rica as early as 1779
Costa Rican Coffee: A Look Back at Its Rich History
As the commercialization of coffee growing began to take hold in Costa Rica, producers struggled to find markets. For a time, most Costa Rican green coffee beans were being exported to Chile, where it would be re-exported to Europe as a Chilean product, "Caf? Chileno de Valpara?so," named after the port town from which it shipped.

The Four Horsemen: The Story of Central American Coffee Part 1
For as long as many people on the commodity side of coffee trading can remember, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Costa Rica have been referred to as "The Four Horsemen." While everyone can understand the reasons for connecting them, the reason they were given the nickname, "Four Horsemen," seems to be lost to time. It's an oral tradition within the trading side of the coffee industry, and internet research reveals no written record. And yet, most people who have been trading coffee for more than 20 years know that these are The Four Horsemen.

Fair Trade Organic Coffee from Nicaragua has Arrived

Nicaragua SHG FTO - Las Segovias
Plum, Chocolate, Honey, Berries, Butterscotch, Bright, Heavy Body
The Las Segovias Certified Organic Coffee Producers Multisectoral Cooperative (PROCOCER) is located in Nicaragua, in the Nueva Segovia region.
The goal of the cooperative is to market organic coffee. It is an organization of small producers who work with family labor and aims to improve the quality of life for families and partners, in harmony with the environment.
The biggest challenge for the cooperative is in the sale of coffee under all Fair Trade, Organic and SPP certifications, in addition to the lack of sufficient capital for the retention of coffee, which results in at least half of the coffee produced under organic technology to be sold to the local market at the price of a square, undermining the producers'' efforts.

Our California Warehouse, The Annex, is relocating which will result in order delays
Hi Noah,
The Annex in San Leandro, California, our West Coast warehouse, is relocating to a new location in Alameda starting Monday, September 21st. This is in support of their continued growth and favorable access to the Port of Oakland, however, this unfortunately means there will be a one-day delay in order processing.
"During this three-month relocation process, which will commence on Monday, September 21st, we respectfully request that all Delivery Instructions be submitted to us with 48-hour notice. For example, if you''re accustomed to making an appointment on Tuesday, before 11:00 am, for a Wednesday pickup, you will now be expected to make your appointment on Monday before 11:00 am (times are Pacific)." - The Annex
As mentioned, this will temporarily add an extra day to processing orders, so please plan accordingly when ordering coffee after September 21st. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation.
Please feel free to contact customer service at CustomerService-OSC@olamnet.com with any questions.
Thank you,

Olam Direct uses technology and local leadership to remove links in the supply chain for remote smallholder coffee farmers
Between Here and There -
Olam Direct Collapses the Distance Between Farmer and Market
While all coffee farmers are "at origin," not all coffee farmers occupy the same logistical geography within the supply chain. If your morning cup of coffee is the final link in that coffee supply chain, some coffee farmers are further away from that cup than others. In general, the longer the chain, the less the farmer will be paid relative to the market closer to the point of export.
Olam Direct uses technology and local leadership to remove links in the supply chain for remote smallholder coffee farmers.

Colombian coffee is considered to be some of highest quality coffee in the world. Cajamarca's inter-Andean valleys have hosted coffee crops for more than 200 years and concentrate almost 43% of the total Peruvian coffee production, not only because of its vast lands but because of an ancient coffee tradition that goes back to the XVIII century, when the first crops were brought in and nurtured by the many generations of producers in the region.

We are happy to introduce Olam's own Coffee Farmers Market, where that connection is just as important as the coffee. Please prepare for shipping delays and warehouse closures this holiday season
Hi Olam Family,
Wishing you all the best during this strange holiday season. As we enter the busiest shipping season, we wanted to set expectations for delivery times and notify you of our warehouse closures.
We have been advised by Continental Terminals warehouse in New Jersey to expect delays in releasing coffee for shipment due to increases in order volume combined with continuing challenges related to COVID. In most cases, a 24 hour turn around, from receipt of delivery order to coffee being ready to ship, will not be possible. Please expect, at minimum, two full days from order to shipment and plan accordingly.
Similarly, as a reminder, The Annex warehouse in California continues their relocation project and two days is still the expected turnaround time for orders to ship.
Given the increase in order to ship times, in addition to the expected seasonal delay in trucking, we encourage you all to order as far in advance as you are comfortable to ensure that you have your coffee in house.
Keep in mind that our offices, as well as the warehouses, will be closed on December 25 and January 1, 2021, so please plan accordingly.
