Project SEARCH Open House
Project SEARCH is hosting an event this month to increase awareness of the program which assists students with disabilities to learn skills that will help them get jobs after leaving high school.
Project SEARCH Open House will be held Feb. 20th, 6-7 p.m. at the Cox Convention Center, Meeting Room 9, in Oklahoma City.
Transition-aged students, educators, and family members are invited to attend. Project SEARCH provides education and training to young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities with the goal of securing competitive employment.

A plethora of grants abound for purchasing tools for students with disabilities, yet lack of funds is often cited as a significant barrier to providing AT in the classroom. To help educators learn how to take advantage of funding opportunities, ABLE Tech has added a new workshop to the AT Support Team Training lineup. “Funding Assistive Technology for Students with Disabilities” will be held on June 5 at The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital in Bethany.
Cleaning sharp knives and cutlery can be a hazardous task, but with the BladeBrush Knife and Cutlery Cleaner, students with disabilities can perform these tasks more safely. The unique wrap-around design cleans both sides of a utensil at once while keeping fingers away from any sharp edges. The tough bristles quickly remove food debris and the textured grip helps prevent hands from slipping.

Chromebooks and other small laptop computers can sometimes present challenges due to the compact nature of the keyboards. Students with a variety of disabilities may be more effective in using a computer when they are able to interact using a touchscreen. In these cases, the computer itself can be considered assistive technology (AT). Touchscreen Laptops are among the thousands of AT devices available to try with your students. ESSP Spring 2020 Symposium
Challenge Air is taking registrations for its 3rd Annual Tulsa Area Fly Day scheduled for Saturday, April 18 at the RL Jones Jr. Airport and Tulsa Tech Center, Riverside Campus. This free event provides kids with disabilities (ages 7-21) and their families the opportunity to experience flight in a welcoming and supportive environment. ABLE Tech staff will be on site to visit with families about tools for a variety of needs. Registration is limited to the first 100 kids, and volunteers are welcome. 
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recently announced the opening of a new Civil Rights Compliance Center within the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR). The Outreach, Prevention, Education and Non-discrimination (OPEN) Center, will focus on proactive compliance with federal civil rights laws and will provide assistance and support to schools, educators, families, and students to ensure better awareness of the requirements and protections of federal non-discrimination laws.
