In 1964 then California Governor Ronald Reagan warned us against taking our freedom for granted:
"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same."
These words are so important to us at the John Locke Foundation that we have them painted on our wall to serve as daily inspiration for the work we do.
Just days ahead of our 244th Independence Day, North Carolina, which boasts a history of being "first in freedom," finds its freedom being tested with both a constitutional crisis and an economic catastrophe due to Governor Roy Cooper's response to COVID-19. Meanwhile, our rule of law is being replaced with mob rule.
In the words of Thomas Paine, "these are the times that try men's souls." At the Locke Foundation we aren't summer soldiers who shrink from service. We engage and defend our principles.
