Welcoming Dr. Moira Faul as new Executive Director of NORRAG
Moira comes to us from her current post as Deputy Director of the Public-Private Partnership Center at the University of Geneva, and was also Visiting Professor at the Graduate Institute (IHEID) in 2019. Originally from Zimbabwe, Moira brings substantial expertise in education and international cooperation, as well as in organizational development and management in the private and voluntary sectors in China, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. NORRAG selected for hosting the ASIA++ hub of the KIX Initiative
NORRAG successfully participated in the international Call of IDRC (International Development Research Centre, Canada) for Regional Learning Partners of the KIX Initiative. The Knowledge and Innovation Exchange Initiative (KIX) of the Global Partnership for Education aims to strengthen education systems by implementing a mechanism for (i) surfacing and generating knowledge, (ii) adapting and taking to scale innovations, and (iii) learning from others by means of exchange. 22 - 26 March 2020, Miami, Florida - NORRAG at the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) Annual Conference, Education Beyond the Human: Toward Sympoiesis
Dear NORRAG Members:
As you may know, the CIES Board has, in consideration of the safety and health of the CIES community, cancelled the on-site conference in Miami. We fully support the decision of the CIES Board. The following compilation of panels provides nevertheless a useful overview of the work of colleagues that would have presented at CIES 2020.
NORRAG will be participating in the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) Annual Conference on 22-26 March 2020 in Miami. NORRAG will organise or participate in 11 panel discussions, four paper sessions, as well as the presentation of two NORRAG Special Issues and the outline of Book #3 in the book series on International Education and Development. 16 March 2020: Global monitoring of national educational development: coercive or constructive?
The panel with internationally renowned experts in education and global governance discusses the impact of global monitoring on national reform priorities in education. The event represents the launch of the new NORRAG Special Issue 03 (NSI 03) on the topic. The authors of NSI 03 examine how global monitoring knowledge is mobilized, produced, disseminated and used. The analyses are meant to bridge the gap between theory and practice as well as advocacy and policy in education. Three of the authors of the NSI 03 contributions will present their articles: Blanca Heredia, Gita Steiner-Khamsi and Paul Coust?re. Read more...

5-8 May 2020, S?o Paulo, Brazil: Philanthropy in Education - Latin America, the Caribbean and Lusophone Countries
NORRAG and the Brazilian Campaign for the Right to Education (BCRE) are engaged in an international effort to facilitate dialogue, research, and stakeholder collaboration for understanding how private actors, especially philanthropy, engage in education and interact with the Right to Education (RTE) in Latin America, the Caribbean and Lusophone Countries. As part of the Philanthropy in Education Symposium Series, NORRAG and BCRE will co-organize a panel session within the "International Seminar on Education: Facing challenges and strengthening free, quality public education in Latin America and the Caribbean and in the Lusophone countries". 31 May - 1 June 2020: Philanthropy in Education: Reflections and Actions towards 2030
The final symposium of the series Philanthropy in Education: Global Trends, Regional Differences and Diverse Perspectives will be held in the United Arab Emirates on May 31st & June 1st 2020. The symposium series is an initiative that was launched in 2016 by NORRAG, and the Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation. It seeks to facilitate greater understanding and collaboration between philanthropic organizations, national policymakers, representatives of international organizations and academics working in the field of education. NSI 03: Global Monitoring of National Educational Development: Coercive or Constructive?
Published originally in Spanish, the third edition of NORRAG Special Issue (NSI), released on 3 October 2019, is now available in English. "Global Monitoring of National Educational Development: Coercive or Constructive?" aims to analyze the impact of global monitoring reports on education and educational policy around the world. The Human Capital Index: A Flawed Methodology to Measuring School Learning | IHEID
The tragedy of the millions of children that are out-of-school (258 million), and the severe shortfall of funds to finance universal education (1.8 trillion USD) are recurring themes. Call for Contributions - NORRAG Special Issue 05 Domestic Financing: Tax and Education
In the wake of the SDG 2030 agenda, demands for alternative sources of finance for funding educational development have come up. A recurring theme is tax justice both in the global North and in the global South. NORRAG invites specialists and stakeholders interested or involved in the domestic financing of education, in particular on tax and education, to contribute to NSI 05. Event Report - NORRAG at the 12th Policy Dialogue Forum on "The Futures of Teaching"
As a member of the UNESCO Teacher Task Force and a key partner, Professor Ji Liu, also NORRAG Senior Research Associate, joined delegates at the Annual meeting and the 12th Policy Dialogue Forum of the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 (TTF). Watch again: Innovative Financing Case Studies and Debates in the New PPP Aid Architecture
Given the general decline in global aid to education and the need for an additional USD 1.8 trillion per year (as estimated by the Education Commission) in low and middle-income countries to achieve SDG4, there is a growing interest in turning to innovative financing mechanisms for the sector. Launched in 2019, the NORRAG Podcast already has four published episodes. The first episodes are dedicated to authors of the NORRAG Book "Philanthropy in Education: Diverse Perspectives and Global Trends", the second in the NORRAG Book Series in International Education and Development, published by E.
