We are pleased to announce that NLGN’s latest report –‘Community Mobilisation: Unlocking the potential of community power’ – has now been released.
This a how-to guide for councils interested in the idea of creating engaged, empowered communities. It offers a range of case studies that illustrate how this can be done in practice - from involving residents in creating affordable housing, to reaching those
falling ''between the gaps'' of public services.
It also presents four key take-home lessons for would-be community mobilisers:
catalyse, don’t lead; listen; build something and have clear goals.
Find the full reporthere, or read the blog of our summary findingshere.
And dovisit our Twitter page to watch our animation about the report''s key lessons.
We hope you find the report useful. If we can offer any additional support to your council in sharing these findings please get in touch.
Best wishes,

Dear Matthew Clark,
New Local’s new report: This Isn’t Working: Reimagining employment support for people facing complex disadvantage is out today.
It argues that the DWP-led system of employment support for people facing complex disadvantages such as disabilities and health conditions is not fit for purpose. With millions of people at risk of losing their jobs, this group should be supported locally, removing this responsibility from DWP.
This isn’t Working features examples from across the UK where local services have helped people into work, some of whom had been jobless for decades because of issues such as mental health problems, social isolation, drug and alcohol misuse, and contact with the criminal justice system.
We set out policy recommendations to realise our vision of a more personalised, inclusive and effective approach to supporting people through – and out of – unemployment.
Five ways to find out more and get involved:
1) Download the report
2) Read author Tom Pollard’s blog: For jobseekers facing complex disadvantage, the DWP just isn't working
3) Sign up to our post-launch online discussion on 9 November
4) Listen to our podcast, featuring an interview with a Yorkshire jobseeker and her mentor
5) Share your thoughts on Twitter, @wearenewlocal using hashtag #ThisIsntWorking
I hope you enjoy the report - we’d be delighted to discuss it further with you.
Best wishes,
Pawda Tjoa

Dear Matthew Clark,
We’re delighted to let you know that today New Local Government Network has changed its name to New Local. This is alongside a new brand, and a new website.
Why have we done this? The world, and the public sector have changed a lot since we launched almost 25 years ago. Our members increasingly tell us their work is no longer about governing in the traditional sense. Councils today are mobilising communities and collaborating with partners to meet big social challenges and transform their areas. The decision to become New Local is part of making sure our name and identity reflects this new vision.
Go here to read more about the thinking behind the change, and watch a video from our Chair Professor Donna Hall.
While you’re there, do have a look at our new website features, including:
Current work hub and publications library
Blog, podcast and video library
New people page
We’ve changed our Twitter handle to @wearenewlocal. We’d love to hear your thoughts on the new brand and name there (or over email!)
We look forward to working closely with you as we move into this new chapter.
All the best,
Adam Lent, Chief Executive, New Local
