Our buildings may be closed but we are open online!
Dear Friends
Since closing our doors two weeks ago, we have been working hard to ensure we support artists, freelancers, regular participants, volunteers and staff in every way we can. But we have also been planning new approaches to delivering extraordinary encounters for you, with great art and artists. And we've been thinking about how we can support our communities, working with and responding to them, in new ways.
You may already have seen that many of our most important projects have been re-imagined in a digital format, from Our Young People's Art PrizePeople's Vote on Facebook and our regular Tea, Cake & Art sessions and Lunchtime School are now being delivered live to people's homes using open-source video conferencing tools. More information on these can be found on our website.
We are redoubling our work with key partners, who we will support in delivering major projects in the coming months, including WILD Young Parents and LGBTQIA+ young people from across Cornwall, both continuing to draw on the fabulous resource of the Arts Council Collection of more than 8,000 works of contemporary art.
Reflecting on Cornwall's tradition of feasts and festivals - not forgetting our own 125th anniversary this year - we are looking at how we can host online gatherings for a mass audience this summer. We are also thinking about how we can get everyone painting, drawing and making art in their own homes, with the results forming the heart of a celebratory event at the gallery when we reopen.
While we are closed to the public we are determined to continue supporting the artists, creative sector and the people of our community. Please consider becoming a Supporter, or making a donation to help us do this. All Supporter subscriptions and donations, large or small, will ensure that we can keep offering our audience and our communities, art and activities that can inspire and change things for the better.
Please stay safe at home, and we hope you will join with us in celebrating life getting back to normal very soon.

Connections That Matter and enjoy lovely rewards for yourself or as a Christmas gift for someone else. It''s a win-win!

EXTRAORDINARY POSTCARDS FOR EXTRAORDINARY TIMES / ARTISTS'' FILMS / SIGNS OF THE TIMES /
2020 marks the 125th anniversary of the opening of Newlyn Art Gallery, and our autumn programme forms the heart of our 125 celebrations and reflects our commitment to projects that are meaningful and relevant to as many people as possible.
In the upper gallery, Extraordinary Postcards For Extraordinary Times is a record of our collective experiences of life under lockdown. Local groups including St Petroc's homeless charity, Whole Again Communities, schools and residential homes, WILD young parents, Cornwall Library borrowers, Penzance Food Bank users, the Intercom Trust and Shallal have all contributed to the project. We have also had submissions from far-flung places: not just Cornwall and the UK, but across Europe, from the Far East and the United States.
In the lower gallery we present a series of artists' films selected from the Arts Council Collection by young LGBTQIA+ people, through our ongoing partnership with the Intercom Trust. New paintings by Jake Clark are presented in The Picture Room?.
In the garden, we have Signs Of The Times, artists' responses to recent events, in particular the Coronavirus pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement, through posters and placards. In October, during Black History Month we will present an installation by Black Voices Cornwall in the Studio Caf? area upstairs.

We are recruiting for the post of Head of Programme Strategy. This senior role, will help us shape our organisational strategy for the years ahead, building on our current success.
We are also looking for someone to join our team as Finance & Facilities Officer. This new role is crucial to the effective and efficient running of the organisation.
AN INCLUSIVE APPROACH TO RECRUITING

We are particularly interested in applicants'' ability and potential. We also understand that some candidates will be looking for a degree of flexible work, and we will always try to accommodate that. As users of the Disability Confident Scheme, we guarantee to interview a representative proportion of disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for the vacancies.
The deadline for both roles is 10.00 on Mon 23 Nov.
Interviews will take place by Zoom on Fri 4 Dec for Head of Programme Strategy and Fri 11 Dec for Finance & Facilities Officer.
Full details, and how to apply on our website.
If you know someone who would be perfect for one of these jobs, please do let them know. All the details are on our website (link above).

Extraordinary Postcards
FOR EXTRAORDINARY TIMES
CELEBRATE YOUR CREATIVITY
The Extraordinary Postcards are starting to fly back to the gallery, we can't wait to be able show them in the gallery as a document of these strange times, later in the year.
So far, we've sent out 3,000 postcards and demand has been so great that we are ordering a second print run. If you'd like to take part - or you'd like more postcards - just email your name and postal address to info@newlynartgallery.co.uk and we'll send you a pack.
#ExtraordinaryPostcards
OUR PLAN OF ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THE BLACK LIVES MATTER AGENDA
The shocking murder of George Floyd, and subsequent events globally have triggered a profound moment where we are all challenged to consider our part in the Black Lives Matter agenda. Moving forward we want to commit to actions, and to hold ourselves to account if we fail to make the progress we promise.
If you feel that you can help us make the progress we are planning, we would be pleased to hear from you.
James Green, Gallery Director james.green@newlynartgallery.co.uk
Following our email yesterday, we have taken the decision to close the galleries as a temporary measure.
This was not an easy decision to make, but the health and wellbeing of our team, and of our visitors must be our priority. However, we recognise that for many of you, visiting the gallery, using our cafes, or attending a class is an important part of your everyday life. In fact, culture and creativity are essential to our wellbeing. We are therefore looking at how we can keep engaged with you, and as wide an audience as possible, whether that's through virtual tours of exhibitions on our website, or live streaming of art classes on social media. We appreciate that some of you will welcome time away from your screens in the coming weeks so we will also be looking at non-digital means of keeping in touch.
Again, in line with Government advice, the team will be mostly working from home, and contactable via email. A list of the staff together with their email addresses can be found on our website
Please look after yourselves and your families and we hope you will join with us in celebrating the re-opening of the galleries very soon.

HOW DO WE PROBLEM SOLVE?
AN EASTER WORKSHOP TO DO FROM HOME
How do engineering and creative thinking come together? Inspired by themes from Hippo Campus, we will explore the ways we learn from experience by building physical structures from flat objects to understand the differences between 2D and 3D thinking.
This workshop has been devised for 7 - 13 year olds for us by artist Alice Mahoney, but everyone can get involved and get thinking! All you need are sheets of paper (any size and colour) and tape or glue stick.
See our website for downloadable instructions, and an audio file where Alice talks you through what to do. There are also examples of problem solving.
If you'd like to share the work you create with us, we'd love to see it. You can email a photo to info@newlynartgallery.co.uk or tag us on social media. (Please note: We may share your images on our social media channels)
In case you missed it, our first Easter Workshop, How Do We Remember Things?, is still available.
SUPPORT US
While we are closed to the public we are determined to continue supporting the artists, creative sector and the people of our community.
Please consider becoming a Supporter, or making a donation to help us do this. All Supporter subscriptions and donations, large or small, will ensure that we can keep offering our audience and our communities art and activities that can inspire and change things for the better.
only two days left to support our christmas campaign for tea, cake & Art
There are just two days until the end of our
TEA, CAKE & ART CHRISTMAS APPEAL
A huge thank you to the many people who have already supported this year''s Christmas Campaign, Tea, Cake & Art - Connections That Matter.
You have raised 80% of our ?5,000 target, which will be used to keep our Tea, Cake & Art group for people living alone continuing to connect in 2021, whether that''s via zoom or by post for those wishing to stay analogue. This winter will be particularly hard on those already isolated, and we plan to bring the group back into the gallery again as soon as we safely can.
'For me Tea, Cake & Art has been brilliant. It's just really lovely to have a connection, do something creative. It's been really nice to see everybody, and share what each of us is creating and it's just been . like an island of connectivity really.''
If you''d like to help us hit that target, you can still DONATE before midday on Friday, and claim some rather lovely rewards ranging from actual tea, cake and art in the gallery for you and a friend, to a Bag of Art, to a Zoom Art Workshop for you and five friends. You can even commission a portrait from the talented Tea, Cake & Art participants!
'I've really appreciated these sessions because I did miss the people I used to meet, you know, and I still do and this is keeping me in touch a bit.'
Thanks once again, your support brings real benefits to a sometimes isolated or overlooked part of our community.
If you know of someone who may be interested in joining the group, please pass on our contact email: bettina.wenzel@newlynartgallery.co.uk.
Tea, Cake & Art is supported by:
Cornwall Community Foundation
Cornwall Council''s funds: Social Inclusion Fund, Creative Cornwall Calling and Councillor Jim McKenna''s Community Chest
Since the March Lockdown, our weekly Tea, Cake & Art sessions for older people living alone, while halted in the gallery, have continued to reach our Tea, Cake & Art-ers by zoom (with technical help supplied to both participants and staff!) and by post for those preferring the analogue world.
'I've really appreciated these sessions because I did miss the people I used to meet, you know, and I still do and this is at least keeping me in touch a bit.'
We are very aware that the current coronavirus crisis is having a profound impact on already-isolated people and we are working hard to keep the all-important connection going within the group, while reaching new members at home who would not otherwise have been able to join in.
I would like to have projects sent by post and I would like to try them online. Your ideas on keeping Tea, Cake & Art going like this is brill!
That is why keeping Tea, Cake & Art through the winter months and into 2021 is our Christmas Campaign.
We would really like your help to raise ?5,000 this year towards keeping these important connections via zoom and post, and planning to get back to meeting once again in the gallery.
Please consider donating?10, ?25, ?60 (or more) and in return, we will offer rewards, including your own Tea & Cake in the gallery, a bag of art goodies, a personalised Zoom Art Workshop or even your own portrait made by a Tea, Cake & Art-er (these rewards can be wrapped for you to send as a gift). You can also 'pay it forward' to support a Tea, Cake & Art-er for the afternoon - or for the year!
Funds raised will be generously matched by Creative Cornwall Calling, and the Cornwall Social Inclusion Fund, making your donation work even harder.
If you, or someone you know, would like to take part in the weekly sessions, please email Bettina Wenzel who will let you know how to join and what you will need.
Please help keep Tea, Cake & Art connecting in 2021
Artists and makers often learn specialist skills or acquire new knowledge when making a body of work. For each Lunchtime School we invite them to present a talk about what they learnt and from who, followed by an informal discussion with the online group.
How to book and get the Zoom link
Notes and reading lists from previous sessions are also available on our website, so if you''ve ever wanted to learn Polari (it''s fantabulosa!) or build a house, take a look.

COVISOR PROJECT
MAKING FACE SHIELDS FOR THE NHS
There is a huge shortage of PPE in Cornwall and across the UK due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Falmouth-based Sam Lanyon and his non-profit team have been working to mass produce face shields for the NHS, either at cost price or for free.
To help support this endeavour a community of artists from across the South West have generously donated artworks for sale, with 100% of proceeds going directly to Sam's CoVisor Project.

Extraordinary Postcards For Extraordinary Times at Newlyn Art Gallery. Photo by Steve Tanner
Dear Friends
I am sure it is no surprise to hear that we will once again have to close our doors.
In line with other hospitality, leisure and non-essential businesses, we will regrettably have to close at the end of Wednesday. But in order to give you an extra chance to catch the current programme, we are extending our Wednesday opening time to 8pm as a one-off event.
We will be ready to welcome you back in December, with all our safety and social distancing measures in place to ensure you have a safe and relaxing visit.
In the meantime please see our website; over the next few days we will be adding new films for you to enjoy including Tropicalit?, l''?le et l''Exoteby Paul Maheke (from Wednesday), and a brilliant talk through of The Vanity of Small Differences by Grayson Perry.
You can also listen to our ArtPods, or view online all the incredible postcards in Extraordinary Postcards for Extraordinary Times, created during the spring lockdown.
Our online shop will be open so you can get your christmas shopping done during this period. We''ll be adding more stock over the next week or so.
Our Tea, Cake & Art group will continue to meet via by Zoom on Tuesday afternoons. Please get in touch if you or someone you know would like to take part.
Other exciting projects are under development too, so please keep an eye on our website and social media for more information.
Finally, a huge thank you for your support over the past few months, just when we needed it most. You've turned a difficult situation for the gallery into a great success. In spite of being open for reduced hours, our latest visitor numbers have been extraordinary. In October visitor numbers were up by 141% on the same period last year, which is an extraordinary result, so thank you.
In line with Government advice, the team will be mostly working from home, and contactable via email. A list of the staff together with their email addresses can be found on our website
Once again, please look after yourselves and your families and we hope to welcome you back in December.
Dear Supporters, Patrons and Friends of the Gallery
Following updated advice from the Government on non-essential contact, we have taken the decision to cancel all forthcoming events, including Bad Art Class, the prize-giving for the Young People's Art Prize and Lunchtime School, for the foreseeable future.
We apologise for any inconvenience and disappointment. This was not an easy decision to make, but the health and wellbeing of our team and of our visitors must be our priority.
We are constantly reviewing the situation, and expect to close soon, but for the time being the galleries remain open. Please be assured that we are making the venues as safe as they can be with regular cleaning and sanitising. All we ask is that you wash your hands thoroughly when you arrive, and only visit us if you have no symptoms.
In the event of closure, we are looking at how we can share our programmes with you, whether that's virtual tours of the exhibitions via our website, or live streaming of art classes on social media.
In line with Government advice the team will be mostly working from home, and contactable via email. A list of the staff together with their email addresses can be found on our website if you want to get in touch with us.
Thank you for your understanding. Look after yourself and stay well.

WHEN THE WORLD BECAME QUIET
Three FREE workshops suitable for 10 - 14 year-olds to do at home
With no aeroplanes, fewer cars, less heavy industry and fewer people during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a brief moment when the world appeared to go quiet. But as we tuned to this new reality we realised that there was the low hum of lost sounds, of insects, birds and other animals.
We will investigate this very particular and peculiar moment in time through three workshops. There will be a new workshop every week to either download or join in live via Zoom.
WEEK 1 MON 29 JUN / TIM RIDLEY: DRAWING ANIMALS USING A CONTINUOUS LINE
News reports and social media gave us images of all kinds of creatures venturing into cities and towns the world over. A downloadable activity sheet with film links will explore sketching animals from found images.
WEEK 2 TUE 7 JUL / ALICE MAHONEY: EXPLORING IMAGINARY WORLDS THROUGH SOUND
Join artist Alice live in our regular Tea Cake & Art Zoom session, where soundscapes will help you create landscapes through drawing and collage. This session is intergenerational and you are welcome to invite your Grandma or Grandad along too. Also available as a downloadable activity sheet. Booking essential via eventbrite.
WEEK 3 MON 13 JUL / POLLY ROBERTS: A CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP
We will explore how our relationship with the world around us may have changed over the last few months. 'Imagination firelighters' will kick-start the process as you dive into nature to discover its secrets, merging real life details with those from your imagination.
Dip into the ones you fancy or join us for all three.
We'd love you to share your work with us. Use #ChildrensArtWeek

ENJOY SELECTED FILM & AUDIO WORKS FROM HIPPO CAMPUS: WHERE WE LEARN
Idle Women: Power Toolsis a series of household DIY videos made by women, for women. These fun, approachable and concise videos give instructions on basic DIY tasks such as changing a lightbulb, smashing a window, painting a wall and using a drill.
Magda Stawarska-Beavan''s Mother Tongue explores the artist's son's development of language from his first cry, recorded as she gave birth, to his words and sentences in a bi-lingual home up until he was three years old.
In Marcus Coates''s Conference For The Birds we hear seven different bird species discussing their lives with each other. The birds, played by wildlife experts, in conversation with the artist, discuss topics from migration to predation, with each species speaking about the challenges they face day-to-day.
Ryan Gander''s Reading Without Stigma is a moving image collage documenting a series of investigations by the artist and five children from Knotty Ash Primary School in Liverpool. Adapting principles from the artist's own ideas-based practice, as well the Montessori methods of education, they explore improvisation, hands-on learning and collaborative play.
Rachael Jones''s Penzance Independent Shops celebrates the knowledge and skills held by independent shopkeepers in Penzance. It is a reminder to slow down, perhaps don't immediately go online, and ask the people in our town for their advice.
Benedict Drew''s Spelunking took the form of eight thematic public workshops. The alternative curriculum led the participants on a journey around caves, tunnels, smugglers' paths, cavities, stalactites, cryptocurrency and subterranean myths.
Hippo Campus: Where We Learnis a group exhibition at The Exchange featuring works from the Arts Council Collection that explores alternative schooling, peer-to-peer learning and self-education.

A Heuristic Interlude tells the stories of five families in the UK who were not home-schooling prior to lockdown. However, since trialling this way of living and learning during the school closures, they have either decided to de-register their children from school, or are seriously considering doing so before schools return in September.
Heuristic (adj.) Enabling a person to discover or learn something for themselves.

2020 was always going to be an important year for the gallery, with our plans to celebrate in style the 125th anniversary of the opening of Newlyn Art Gallery. But, of course, this time last year, we didn't know the half of it! It has proved to be a year none of us will forget, and it would be easy to let events overshadow the positives we've seen over the last 9 months, and the sense of communities coming together to support each other in any way they can.
In spite of all the challenges, when we have been able to open, we've had bumper attendances, for shows ranging from our blockbuster Grayson Perry exhibition The Vanity of Small Differences to Extraordinary Postcards For Extraordinary Times, presenting personal reflections of the year, by all sorts of people from across the world. We've delivered digital and non-digital projects connecting communities, when meeting face-to-face just wasn't possible. Details of all the year's highlights
can be found here.
Most of all though, I wanted to say a big thank you to you, our visitors and supporter for sticking by us during the most difficult of years, and I look forward to seeing you in the gallery again in 2021.
On behalf of everyone at the gallery, have a relaxing break, keep safe and let's hope for the most wonderful of years in 2021.

Image: Ore Ahmeed, Quite The Tumble Indeed. From the series Isolation Demoralisation
Isolation Demoralisation is a new series of work by emerging artist Ore Ahmeed, which was intended to be shown in The Meeting Room at The Exchange. As we have had to close under lockdown measures, the exhibition is now available via our online shop.
All works are for sale.
Isolation Demoralisation is a colourful exploration of the effects of isolation during the first lockdown in spring 2020. Ahmeed's work was recently featured in Signs Of The Times; an outdoor billboard exhibition at Newlyn Art Gallery presenting works by artists from around the UK responding to that time, whilst also offering inspiration, hope and change.
A3 versions of the billboards, including Ahmeed''s work, are also for sale in our online shop.
** SHOP SALE **
